i love your attitude!! so inspiring. can’t wait to pot my rooted seeds. your attitude makes me wanna do it now in the middle of the night where i am! cheers
Elle, thanks for your positive comment. Aint' nothing better than that feeling of extreme motivation where you wanna jump out of bed and get something accomplished!
After seen your videos I started with 5 avocado seeds 3 are doing great 1died and 1 struggling, I am translating them today, I am following all your advises.
i live in the netherlands i germinated a hass avocado pit with the toothpick method let the plant grow to 30 cm and pruned it to 15cm then let it grow back to 30cm and then potted it in soil this week and it is doing great hope it will live a long time!
Hi, your videos are new to me and I love them. I just subscribed! I live in sunny Burbank California and I enjoy planting from an avocado seed right into the dirt. I get so emotional when it begins to sprout. You have given me lots of good information on grafting and I will certainly use every bit. Now I've got to get back to watching the rest of your awesome videos :) Thank you!!
I just stumbled on your channel while searching for the ideal way to pot my avocado seedlings, which I found in one of your videos :) I have 4 seeds growing in water and just potted 2 of them. I love love love avocados 🥑 I use them for everything. Food, skin, hair lol I really hope to have great fruits from my seeds one day. I’m in the French Caribbean in Guadeloupe :) thank you for sharing!
Sarolia, Thank you for sharing your story with us. Congratulations on the seedlings! Not sure if you got a chance to watch this video but it tells more about how to get fruit from your trees. ruclips.net/video/ySeetOBf7og/видео.html
Buddy, I've had so many failures with planting and growing avocados. Especially Simmonds. I live in Venice, FL. I watched one of your videos where you planted one, covered it, didn't even water it because you said the rain was coming so this is what I did. I dug the hole, wide and shallow (just as high as the pot). I drenched the hole full of water. Took the Simmonds out (it is about 5 feet tall). I didn't break up the root too much aside from getting the roots a bit more out because it was SLIGHTLY root bound and didn't want the root to continue in a circle. I sprinkled some great white mycorrhizae on it, I didn't cut any roots or trim the tree however. Covered it, added some mushroom compost and organic aspen mulch and left it alone. We have had a little rain since but no down pours. I must say, aside from a few yellow leaves (and I literally mean few, like 5 lol) the tree looks healthy. The question I have for you, at what point should I say, "ok... can't wait on the rain anymore.. time to water"? Or do I? And if yes, water, for how long? Would love a video on watering. That's my biggest issue with everything from avocados to mangoes. Thanks bud. I had also sent you an email on ordering some Simmonds Avocados, if you had any.
yes I would go ahead and water it every 5 days until the rains come. in that vid I just didn't feel like getting out the hose and everything because I knew it was gonna rain I start with Simmonds in about 10 days.
@@dddduu300 I don't have a drop down option by variety but if you want to place an order then email me the order number and tell me to set it aside until we start picking Simmonds I will do that for you. also you can place a note on the order.
I'm planning on starting a advacado farm here in Gambia as me and my partner decided we would like to get into the agricultural industry. I don't know what the hell im doing but I'm going to start regardless. Thank you for these videos because they are helping me so much.
I threw an avocado seed into my compost pile thinking nothing of it, and found a really beautiful little plant after a while! I pulled it up and was surprised that it was the avocado seed growing. I've got it in a pot now and it survived getting nibbled by a caterpillar and grew back, it's over a foot tall now with several leaves. Fingers crossed it'll be okay indoors this winter!
Catherine, Sounds like your tree is off to a great start! Glad you found it hiding out in the compost pile. I think it'll do just fine indoors under you care.
This is the first time I have seen your video and wanted to know what poting soil do I need? I have my avocado seed in water at the moment. I've had 4 for a week now. So I am happy to hear that they don't all grow. Thank you for your videos.
You’re welcome! Any old potting soul will do. Whatever is cheapest. You can augment with a spoonful of 6-6-6 blend fertilizer every 60 days. Good luck!
I just stumbled upon your videos and I must say there very informative. Im growing my own seedling in water from a much smaller seed from my grocery store lol I guess you have to start somewhere lol. But I love the videos a lot of good tips im going to use I learned a TON. I just started becoming a green thumb recently and I'm loving it 🌿🌳🌱
So useful video. Thank you so much. It is a couple of months I growing up avocados from seeds and I have a few nice plants. I kept them indoor because of London’s weather. What do I need to do that my plants produce avocados?
N Z, it's unlikely you'll be able to get fruit indoors I don't think London's climate will allow you to do more than keep the tree as a house plant which can be fun and rewarding, but not quite the same as getting fruit.
All depends where you live. If you're in a cold environment you can bring it inside and keep it next to a window and just keep the soil damp. If it has a growth spurt then transfer to a bigger pot.
Im also from Oslo, Norway! And im also trying my luck at growing avocado trees since my brother has a 4-5 month old tree and I got inspired to do it. Will keep it as a house plant, since there is no chance it will grow outside as you are saying.
Thank you for this awesome video Sir! I'm growing my first soil Avocado in the UK it's very young and doing well, but I think it's time to re-pot. May I please email you a picture 🙏🏼
Hi there the only method that has worked for me is too peel the seed then wrap it in damp kitchen roll in a plastic bag until it sprouts a root. Then either put it in water and later into soil or just put them straight into soil. (Actually just on top of the soil with the root buried) I have noticed the seeds put straight into soil after sprouting roots look a lot healthier than the seedlings transplanted from water to soil.
i have put a avocado seed in the water with toothpicks like 2 months ago and now it hase a pretty big root already and i like to grow food so i bought like 8 more avocados to put in the seed in water aswell and 2 mango's too . greetings from the netherlands .
Excellent video! Could you elaborate on grafting? Why graft on younger trees, how do you find budwood (is budwood the same as scion wood), what are the odds of graft success, etc. Lol, also I’ve been telling everyone avocados make happy ppl.
Thank you so much for nice video with clear explanations. 1. At what age of a seedling do you do grafting? 2. Is it possible for you to share a video where you busy crossing (hand pollination) your cultivars? Moila from South Africa. God bless you!
One of these days I’ll make a video and pollinating I think that’s an excellent idea thank you. As far as the age wait till it gets to be about the diameter of a pencil and you’ll be ready to graft
Love your videos. I live in central Florida, how do you feel about whitewashed them for sunburn or would adequate irrigation be sufficient to prevent it?
I grew a seedling 🌱 from a store bought avocado that was on clearance last June I grew it in water and have just potted it in a terracotta pot 👍🌞I live in Yorkshire in the north of England
Just discovered your channel and cant get enough of it. I live in Greece which has a mediterranean climate and have tried several times to grow from seed. Some dont make it and then some do root and sprout but they grow for a while and then the leaves start to die on me and the plant eventually withers. What am I doing wrong. They are not big enough to re-pot so its not that. I have only used the seed in the glass method and usually do this around this time of the year.
from San Antonio Texas. I bought a Monroe from Lowes, May or June. it has grown so fast. it has the morning sun, and the rest of day in shade.. transplanted into a bigger pot until trunk gets dark. I hope it makes..
that's great to hear. We've got a lot of Monroes. So delicious and late enough to have them to make guac for the Super Bowl. Keep us posted on your tree's progress.
Hi Alex, I am from San Antonio, as well just want to ask you, are you going to keep your avocado tree in a pot or are you going to plant in the ground? I have a two avocado trees about 4 feet and I am wondering if i should plant in the ground maybe next February after the cold has passed.
My tree is growing tall but the leaves are more only towards the top. And my trunk is not as thick as the ones in your video. Any suggestions? I grew mine from a seed and water. I kept it in a decorative glass pot because the roots were cool and I liked watching it for a while. I just planted it into dirt last week.
I never had any luck from seeding in water with toothpicks or the wet paper towel method or zip lock bag I live in Victoria Australia its a cold environment all year except summer so its hard to grow them from seed this is my second year with a lot of experiments I finally got a seedling from a store brought seed I put It in 300ml bottle top i have cut off put soil in it then put my seed in the soil then put it upside down in the rest of the bottle I filled with water so it self feeds water from the bottle and the soil keeps it from dyeing from mold it take longer to seed but once it dose you can transplant into a bigger pot and it wont suffer shock going from only water to soil as it was raised in soil and water.
Hello from San Antonio, TX. Thanks for taking the time to make these excellent videos, I have two 4 feet avocado trees which i am planning on planting in the ground next year, problem is the leaves turn brown and the top of the plant turns black, I saw you use copper spray so i bought a bottle and sprayed them they are starting to look better after two days, you said spray them once a month, if the plant gets wet would i have to spray more often? The next thing i plant to do is graft them with another variety but i want o leave one of the original branches on the plant as well, is that okay?
Mdiaz Diaz, Thank you for the compliment and congratulations on your two trees. Good question regarding moisture and spraying. It's best to spray when the tree is dry and will stay dry for the rest of the day. So if it's recently rained wait a bit or if you expect it to rain later then wait a day. It's fine if the tree gets wet between monthly applications. And yes, you can leave some original growth as well as graft. In fact you can graft multiple varieties to the same tree if you want. People have been successful with up to 4 varieties on one tree.
I love this video and this page I have 2 plants in soil and two in water I’m going to transfer to soil. The ones I have in soil I just put outside and the fruit seed part is starting to get dark. Sort of like a sunburn really isn’t that ok or am I killing them?
i loved your video! very fun and interesting!!! my daughter has 2 avocado trees that she sprouted. she has 1 seed that still needs to sprout. Lets hope it makes it through indoors in a new england winter!!!
Hello, thank you for your very useful videos, I have a question about my avocado plant. I am in BC, Canada. How can I keep this plant outside and what temperature is suitable for it? The lower leaves have brown spots and turned yellow. Please guide me on how to keep it outside so that it bears fruit.
I’m sorry to have to break bad news to you. You won’t be able to keep an avocado tree alive in the Canadian winter. Not even in the Canadian autumn. It’s just too darn cold up there. Sorry about that. Your only option is to keep it indoors as a house plant maybe bring it outside on warm summer days.
I have a tree that is about a year and half, its about 3-4 ft tall. I learned from you that it needs to be pruned in order to get it to branch. If I want it to have good fruit I know I need to graft it, but at this point, with it being so tall, what do I do first? It needs a bigger pot, but also to be pruned, and I want to graft it. Can I do all this at once? Or should I just prune it and re-pot it, and wait till next spring to graft it? when it'll be taller. Sorry for the long question, but thank you for all the info!
Hi Jennifer, You want to have at least a month between stressful events. I recommend you prune first then wait a month and repot. Then you can graft in the summer. Good luck!
Hi I grew plant from seed and I grafted today 😊. However the pot the plant was in is getting too small the roots grew straight down. How do I release the plant to repot without harming my root system? Want to see if I am able to add picture for you to see.
I've had this happen. you need to carefully dig the roots out from under the pot then cut or break the pot away from your tree and repot in a bigger size.
Hi there I'm growing an avacado tree in Scotland, about a year old and half the height of my window and still growing quickly 😀 it's strictly inside as idk how it would cope with scottish weather 😂 how long would you say it will take for the tree to have a thicker trunk instead of the firm branch like trunk?
Hello I also am growing a few avocado trees in Alaska. I am hoping to keep them as a house plant any suggestions on how large a pot I should plan on? I do not have high ceilings. Thank you for the great video!
Jennifer, Thanks for reaching out. The bigger the pot the better so as big as you can fit is the way to go. Also, given the short ceiling I recommend you periodically prune the top to encourage lateral growth and stem widening. Good luck with the tree over the winter.
Mohammad, we'll graft these trees next year and they'll start to fruit quickly, like 2-3 years. But I'll prune the buds for the first few years because I don't want big heavy fruit growing on a little tree that hasn't matured yet...i'd rather they dedicate that energy to growth.
1 meter tall Avocado growing in Sweden, Umeå. Found the channel trying to know how to take care of it better, it almost filled the window now and I use a 9W led grow light from Ikea, also have a mango tree and a Ginko.
When do you recommend planting them into soil? have one that has a good amount of roots and it’s only a couple inches height, and another that has only shot out one root. Should I wait for more roots before transplanting them into soil? My first ones leaves have turned brown but they aren’t curled so I think he’s just in to much direct sunlight so I’ve moved them both slightly further from window. Your videos are very informative thank you
sorry for the delay, just saw this comment. by now the one with a little root probably grew more so i'd say it's time to put them both in potting soil. Did you end up with more green leaves?
SleepyLizard yes both of their leaves are looking greener and healthier, I think they had to much direct sunlight so I moved them slightly further from my window and they seem happy. Thanks for your help I think I’ll transplant them this week and hope they do well
Hey Sleepy Lizard, I’ve also grown an avocado tree! Started with a stone/seed in April ish and then once the roots had come out and it started to shoot up I potted it! There are now a couple of leaves and it’s still growing upwards! Watching this video now as I want to know how I should be maintaining it!
@@SleepyLizard Hey buddy , when growing Avocado indoors ,how often should I water it? I already have a nice sprout, while growing it in soil. I live in The Big Apple NYC. Thank You!
Loved the explanation so informative and fun, it inspired me to start 3 weeks ago and i guss i have a green thumb they all are thriving, i just wanna ask how long it takes to fruit? And what if I don’t have a space for moving it to the ground when it gets really big ? Luv from the Philippines
Hi J, a tree planted from seed will fruit in 7-10 years...or not at all. It's luck of the draw. If you want the tree to fruit find a nearby nursery and have them graft it for you. You'll have fruit in 3 years.
Hello. I love your videos. Very informative. I have a question. My mom down in Puerto Rico has an avocado tree that she bought at a nursery after it had just been grafted and started growing as a very small young tree. She’s had it about 20 years now and year after year it has produced the most delicious fruit. It’s buttery and juicy. The fruit are very oblong and no two are the same. Anyway, after Hurricane Maria, the entire tree, roots and all, toppled over. My dad propped it up and tried his best to secure back into the ground with ropes and more dirt. since then, it has survived but it’s been declining in health and only gives a few avocados every year. My mom wants to clone this variety because she loves it and has never seen it anywhere else. Anyway, here’s the question. Can she grow out some seedlings from this tree and then graft scions onto the seedlings from the very same tree? There’s no reason why that wouldn’t work right?
Gianni, the answer to your question is yes. I have a few recommendations: First about the grafting question I recommend grafting a number of seedlings onto both seedlings from the same tree as well as seedlings grown from some fruit you can buy at the market. See which ones produce the best trees, also with grafting it's best to graft more than you need because grafts do not succeed all the time. As for the tree that got knocked over, I might be a matter of pruning. Have your dad watch a few vids on pruning avocado trees. He can prune the tree in such a way as to encourage growth for the coming years. Also, when you stand and prop a large tree you often get air pockets under the tree. You have to water it in. After we stand the tree and put dirt over the roots we use a probe attached to a hose to spray water down under the tree to eliminate the air pockets. Tell your dad to take a 4' pice is 1/2" PVC and put a hose attachment on one end and cut the other end into a point. Take an hour or so and go around the tree sticking the probe into the ground to allow soil to fill in the air pockets. Good luck and let us know how you make out.
SleepyLizard thanks so much for the great advice. I will pass all of this information along. And I’ll advise my mom to start growing seedlings from different sources. A word about the big tree. It toppled over in 2017 back when the hurricane happened and my dad propped it back up literally the next day. Will there still be air pockets in the ground three years later?
@@GianniAzul3609 That's a good question. I don't know. I'd say give it a little haircut once all the fruit is picked and see how it flowers in February.
SleepyLizard ok will do. I wish I could somehow send you some scion pieces so that you could start this variety at your place. Maybe it’s common in FL. I don’t know but my mom says she’s never seen it in PR and it truly is delicious. Although since she bought it at a nursery there’s got to be others I guess.
What type of avocados are you growing? Thise are some HUGE seeds. I also have several plants. Some straing from soil but most in water. I transplanted but one looks like it was effected so I was thinking of trimming
I like watching your videos. i like to grow avocados and make it an additional income in the future. avocados grow well in tropical country, like the Philippines.!
I’ve watched your videos and it inspired me to grow a tree. It’s growing well but I’m in the uk so I’m keeping it inside but near the window. Can you tell me how much water I should give it and what about feed? Growing an Avocado 🥑 tree make me happy 😃
Suzanne, keep it in potting soil and keep the potting soil damp. If you're indoor that can be every day or every other day, just so that when you take a pinch of soil it feels moist. If it feels dry then give it some water. When you want the tree to grow bigger move to a bigger pot. As for feed try a 6-6-6 fertilizer every 60 days or so. Don't put it close to the stem, spread it around the outer edge, just a light sprinkle. Good luck!
I put a couple of avocado seeds in a soil pot, without expecting to root. One of them rooted and has grown about 5” and leaves are coming out. This tree is of the smallest avocados I have seeing. May be Hass or something else. How should I treated? How long can I keep it in the pot and when in the ground.
I have an avocado tree I got from a local grower In Sarasota FL. It is around 3 1/2 feet tall. There are a few branches close to the grown, some leaves touching the grass, seems something might be taking a bite out of them? I am trying to learn if and how to prune this tree. Any suggestions? I am new at this first timer. I have a 4 foot and a 5 1/2 foot mango tree. I am wondering about them too. I love your videos on both. I'm just worried about cutting them. I have never done this and don't know anything about pruning. Thanks!!
Marc, yes you can go ahead and prune the low branches. Pruning is important, especially pruning the top which encourages lateral growth and truck thickening. It's hard to do the first time because you feel like you're harming the tree but in the long run it's healthy for your tree. Good luck with it!
@@marcoverfelt2956 Thanks, now that it's starting to cool down a bit I'll be out there making new vids. I'm working on one about the relationship between avocados and the now extinct giant land sloth.
I have a question. I have several seedlings that are about 10-15in long. The problem is the stem is not really thick, it's somewhat skinny. How thick does the stem have to be, and how could I get the stem to "thicken" up? Also, how high up from the bottom of the stem do you recommend grafting? 3-4 inches? Thanks!
the stem needs to match the diameter of the budwood you're grafting, it can be thick or thin as long as it matches. I prune the tops of my seedlings which causes the stem to thicken. As for how high maybe 5-6 inches. Good luck!
How often do I water when they are in soil in a pot? Do I wait for them to get dry and water ? Do I just do it every day? Should it always be moist? Help
I've started growing an adovado tree myself, got no clue which kind it is, or type a or b it is, but it's grown well and hasn't died yet. I also live in Norway and started in January from seed. It's gotten about 5 inches or so tall but i've run into some issues. For one, it's having the same symptom of one of yours as it only grows leaves on the top of it, Though it has tried to grow leaves below, they don't seem to get any progress and one shoot died before it got to a leaf. I can't really Prune it to give it another shot at leaves as it wont have any if i do. I'm having a problem with the leaves not being completely green and a little see through. I've heard it could be an iron deficiancy but idk. I had it under a bedside lamp for its seed to seedling stage and upped it to a brighter lamp afterwards and have now tried to use a growlight, but i'm unsure of what color to use. Only the top leaves seem to grow bigger, while leaves right below remain small, so idk what it means. kinda new to this.
@@SleepyLizard My tree is very spindly with not many leaves other than on top. Should i pinch the top new leaves? will that make more leaves grow below? There's 2 new leaves growing in the middle on top.
I have grown a tree from seed . It’s now a beautiful avocado tree. it’s two years old and have transplanted it in larger pot. She split on me and I know I must prune it . I’m just a little apprehensive. The seat was from Purto Rico from my aunts farm. I really don’t wanna lose this tree. What do I do with the extra growth from the bottom of the main branch?
I live in south central Texas and I finally have achieved sprouting an avocado seed that was store bought. It has now reached a height of 12 inches and I believe I should transplant to a pot, but I want to ensure a good soil combination for growth. Any advice?
Congratulations on the successful sprout! And yes your'e ready to transplant. All you need to do is fill a three gallon or bigger pot with regular potting soil. No need for any special mix or anything, just regular potting soil. Then you can go around the inner ring of the pot with a spoonful or two of 6-6-6 fertilizer. Be sure and stick to the outside of the pot so you don't burn the roots and stalk. I assume at some point it will be indoors over winter so keep it near a window a keep the potting soil damp. You'll want to keep going to bigger pots over time so you don't stunt the tree's growth. Good luck!
Hello! Thank you so much for your videos 😃 I have several trees growing from seed, my first successful tree I am emotionally attached to, but after repotting it some of the leaves have started to brown! 😩 I noticed 2 things that may be a cause. One, I covered the seed in soil. Ive typically left the top portion of the seed just out of the surface. I’m thinking the soil may not be well draining enough. How do I know if I’m overwatering/underwatering? Please help!
When you transfer from one pot to another it’s stressful to the trees no matter how gently you do it. Your tree is probably just adjusting to its new home. It’ll drop a few leaves and it’ll grow some new ones. Thank you for reaching out with your comment.
My daughter in law gave me an avocado plant about 6 months ago or so, it’s now about 8 ft tall and I’m going to have to bring it in for the winter (zone 6). I’m not trying to grow fruit I just like the plant. What should I do going forward , trim it somehow? I could wrap it and put it in my garage if you think that would be better for it? Not sure what to do going forward?
Terry, yes definitely prune the tree to keep it at the size you want. And it might be worthwhile to repot it next season. After you bring it back outside give it a month to acclimate then transplant to a bigger pot. Keep in mind, moving from outside to inside or inside to outside can cause the tree to lose some leaves, don't worry about that it's normal.
Hi there, I've just watched some of your videos and wanted to ask you something. I'm growing two indoor avocado trees that were grown in water, one of them has been planted in soil, however, the leaves of this one are turning brown. It's been in the soil now for about a month and I'm wondering if you could give some tips on how to save it if possible? I've watched some tutorials of people saying that it could be too much salt in the water, if this is the case, should I repot it using some better soil? By the way, I live in Spain and I believe the weather condition isn't a problem. Many thanks. Toya Darling
@SleepyLizard Hi there, sorry for the late reply. My avocado plants are currently indoors, but the plan is to put them outside on the balcony. Regards, Toya Darling
Got 2x bacon and 1x haas,(In Australia) they are almost a year old, need to ammend our soil before we plant, lots of clay so I'm planning to did some big holes and add some gypsum and start some compost in each hole and then put them on top in a mound, sound like a good plan? I don't want to kill them (we get frost sometimes in winter and 40 deg days in summer so they have to be protected till they are about 2 i hear. Thanks for the info, didn't think to cut the pot open to transplant, I didn't realise the roots were so sensitive1 LOve the video cheers, Oh do avocados grown from seed take longer to produce fruit or is that a myth?
Morgs88, Yeah sounds like a good plan you have there. As for protecting from frost this vid might give you some ideas: ruclips.net/video/Sa7xbWpoL5E/видео.html. Once they reach maturity they will tolerate cold better but you'll still need to take action in the event of a frost. As for growing trees from seed you have two issues neither of which are a myth: First, the tree will take 10 or more years to produce fruit if it ever produces at all. Second, if they do produce fruit it usually doesn't taste very good. I have one mature tree from seed that grew in a forested section of my property. I think a squirrel or something left a seed there and nobody ever noticed it. Some years it gives 200 fruit other years it gives none, one year it gave 2. In any case the fruit is bland, not bad but just bland. I'll be grafting onto it next year. If your trees, the Bacon and Hass are seedlings from the seeds of Bacon and Hass avocados they are actually not Bacon and Hass. The mix of DNA in that seed will be the product of the male and female flowers that pollinated it therefore it's DNA will differ from the mother tree. So if they're grown from seed you'll need to graft Bacon and Hass (or whatever variety you want) onto them to make them true. If on the other hand you bought grafted trees or grafted them yourself then you should start seeing fruit 2-3 years from now. This vid explains the whole seed vs grafting thing: ruclips.net/video/jlZ-MVwayQU/видео.html Good luck and have fun with the trees!
I have a question hoping you can help me with. I had 2 avocado trees that died on me and apparently they died of root rot. Now I got a new avocado tree coming in. Can I or should I plant the avocado tree in the same exact soil as the other avocado trees that died of root rot or do I need to replace the soil so that I don't run the risk of the new tree getting the root rot infection?
Hi P Train, are you talking about in the ground or in pots? If you're referring to planting directly in the ground I'd choose another spot, maybe with higher ground or build a mound. if pots then make sure they have good drainage and use new potting soil thanks for reaching out.
@@SleepyLizard What do you recommend for drainage. These are fabric pots by the way. I will get rid of the soil as you recommend. The new dead avacado trees had in the pots pearl light and mushroom compost and the avocado trees still got root rot so should I use playground sand and pearl light to help increase the drainage even more? What about pebbles or small rocks?
My mango seed is starting to turn slightly yellow, it used to be white. And the seed is already stuck firmly into the soil. I decided to check the soil of my avocado and it came with a really strong foul smell, especially around its canapy not too deep, the deeper I go, the more roots I accidentally break, so I usually stop digging when I reach that level. I check the soil because there's something off about my main avocado- he's not growing, there is a really bad smell from the rootstock as well and the tiny buds or nodes right above the leaves turned orange or brown, so it's not likely that he'll send out a side shoot. When I looked closer, I saw larvae crawling in the soil and most of the roots I've broken, appeared dark brown and dried up, or rotten even. But ner the rootstock the roots are pale, but still extremely fragile. There is quite a bit of browning on the leaves, which grows when the tree is thirsty. Every leaf has some damage. I'm worried. There are microscopic white spots on the leaves, particularly the lower ones. I'm very worried. I think it's infested with spider mites. And this root rot problem is geeting out of hand. I might think about buying a copper fungicide. Do you think that a copper fungicide would help, as well as a fertilizer? I think it will.
Do you think the second sprout on a seed start is an identical twin of the first? Would it be possible for it to have type a and type b sprouts from the same seed? My seed was laying on its side in some rancid water just pure accident I saw it before tossing it out.
Where are you located at? I have 2 mango trees I planted 4 years ago and they are not growing. I'm in Florida and we have a sandy soil. We have a sandy soil , I fertilize in spring and they have 2 or 3 new shoots come out and thats it. I have some avocado seeds just starting in a cup that I'm going to plant. I guess I need to dig out some of the sand and replace it with some other soil. Any advise from a pro?
I have a green avocado in a 10 gallon bucket who’s Hass graft failed (I don’t know the variety of the seed, it came in a hello fresh meal box lol). I thought I killed it because I cut the leaves off to graft. The graph failed right away. All my grafts died. It’s so dry in southern az. Anyway, I was mourning my graphs when this one sprouted 2 new tops! it’s stupid happy in a south facing window in the house now… I just mist it once a day and water it once a week. I want to order scions & try grafting it again. How do you deal with a failed graft?
I'm happy to hear your tree is recovering. You are dealing with the failed graft exactly the way you should, cut it below the graft and let the seedling recover and try again.
Got a question my man. ( I put some avocado seeds in water ,hoping they would start growing then I would transfer to water.they r indudd my kitchen window where they get sunlight.( it's been 3 wks no sign of growth.are they dead or will still grow if I put in soil? Thanks
I have an avocado tree about 3 feet tall. It's putting on leaves at the bottom by the graft. Is that too low to have leaves? How far up should I prune? I would like it to be more bushy rather than a tall tree.
dear sir: I bought two trees, a avacodo, a peach. Both in 15 gallon container. Is it worth while to transfer to a burlap type bag for one year before putting into ground permanently? Winter in 9b zone has a few freeze nights and I need the trees to be ready for outdoor. I want to get them strong indoors using burlap/bag first (ie air prune, and move into indoor during cold nights during that time)? Is it worth doing? Is it too late to air prune since they were in container for years in the nursery where i bought them?? thx.
Are you sure they were in the 15 gallon pot for years? Nurseries typically don’t leave trees in the same pot for years to prevent them from becoming route bound. Anyhow I think it would be best to leave it in a pot rather than transfer the burlap bags otherwise your plan is perfect
Boss Babe, we grew it here on the farm. The seeds from our Waldin variety get even bigger. Here's a vid that talks about the difference between the avocados most people recognize (Hass) and the varieties we grow here: ruclips.net/video/1fG4UfFw3qk/видео.html There are around 100 commercial varieties of avocados but 95% of the avocados consumed in the US are Hass.
I stuck about 15 seeds in tubs to see if I would grow one. I now have 12 baby trees. I would like to know what size pot to transfer them in. Winter is coming in Texas. Thank you
@@kathleenelliot5305 I checked out your RUclips page, you know your way around a garden so in addition to repotting to 3 gallon it would be good for you to check on the roots at the 90 day point. If the trees really take off you don't want them to become root bound. Simply unpot one or two as a spot check and compare the root development to a google search of "root bound tree". If they look like they're getting root bound you can transfer to an even bigger pot or prune the root system. Root bound is when the roots run out of room to grow in the pot and they fill up the pot with a big mess of tangled roots.
Hi I am growing an avocado from seed in water since October. It had a very long root with little ones coming out from it but there is no tree starting to form at the top can I get some help please. BTW it is in soil under a grow light.
Can you make a video on exactly how to graph a avocado tree please Oh and notice that you didn't peel the brown skin from the seed before putting the toothpicks. I guess you don't have to peel?
Also we have a direct soil sowed seedling that's came out strong and for some reason the leaves are turning brown then drying & dropping. Too much sun, too much water, dose it need fertilizer? I'd love to send a pic. Could you tell me how please?
I'm sorry to hear about the tree. Go to "about" on my youtube page and you can click the "view email address button" then click the link to send me an email. attach the pic of the tree and I'll take a look.
my avocado is about a year old, planted it from water, it has 18 leaves and is about half meter tall. but its got a thin stem. so id like to prune it: how many leaves should i leave on?
do you see a little start shaped horn of new growth coming out the top? If you see something like that just pinch it off with your fingers and that should be enough to start some lateral growth.
@@SleepyLizard yes, well i get a set of about 4 or 5 new leaves now quite regularly, my latest 4 are quite young and theres already that tip thatl be the next few leaves. Do you mean that? I woulf have thougt i had tp cut off more. And I can see the those brown spots along the stem where i think a branch could/would come out bit doesnt
@@patrickdaly7876 yes that's what I'm talking about...where the group of 4 or 5 new leaves sprout. You can just pinch them little buds off and that will stimulate lateral growth.
@@patrickdaly7876 You can cut more off the top if you want but you don't have to. And at some point you will see little stems start to sprout off the main stem.
Excuse me i have a new avocado tree & the height is about one foot so when i can transfer it to my garden? i mean when i can transfer it from the plant pot to my garden ground? waiting for reply Thank you so much & sorry to bother you
Fisher, no bother at all. As long as you live somewhere that doesn't get frost you can plant the tree anytime. I like to plant them small because you don't need to dig as big a hole and also the roots will be well formed by the time the tree gets 4 to 5 feet tall. If you get frosts you might want to let the tree mature a bit more in a bigger pot...the bigger trees can survive a frost but the small ones might die.
So I grew a avacado from seed using the toothpick method. It thrived for a year then I re-potted it and the leaves dried up and died but there was new leaves but they dried up. I live in the uk and left it in the sun while it was hot but it had thrived in the house. Was it too much sun too fast or the re potting that killed it? I’m so mad that I killed it. I have a new one growing so silver lining
sometimes repotting can be traumatic and they wilt and die. Your best bet is to do a few at a time...if you've got 6 or 7 and some of them don't make it you'll have others that did.
IF SOMEDAY I BECOME AN AVOCADO FARMER AND SOMEONE ASKS ME WHO INSPIRED ME ILL TELL HIM ITS YOU BECAUSE I THINK YOU ARE THE BEST

Thanks bud.
I had also sent you an email on ordering some Simmonds Avocados, if you had any.
yes I would go ahead and water it every 5 days until the rains come. in that vid I just didn't feel like getting out the hose and everything because I knew it was gonna rain
I start with Simmonds in about 10 days.

Every other day in a pot. Every 5th day in the ground. Of course during our rainy season they get tons of water daily.

How can you keep your avocado thriving in winter? I’ve spent a year on it and I love it hopefully it can survive it’s first winter, got any tips?
All depends where you live. If you're in a cold environment you can bring it inside and keep it next to a window and just keep the soil damp. If it has a growth spurt then transfer to a bigger pot.
SleepyLizard thanks for this! I have a big pot at home and I’ll get some soil tomorrow, hopefully my avocado tree will thrive! Thanks!

Awesome video. I have 2 I've planted from seed one is about 3 ft with the top 25% having all the leaves but they are droopy, any idea?
How long have they been in the same pot? Have you upgraded to a larger pot? Might be time for an upsize in pot.
@@SleepyLizard the big one recently got a new pot about 3 months ago. I think it’s 25 gallon.

Hi Jennifer,
You want to have at least a month between stressful events. I recommend you prune first then wait a month and repot. Then you can graft in the summer. Good luck!

Can’t attach pictures unless you have email?
I've had this happen. you need to carefully dig the roots out from under the pot then cut or break the pot away from your tree and repot in a bigger size.
Hi there I'm growing an avacado tree in Scotland, about a year old and half the height of my window and still growing quickly 😀 it's strictly inside as idk how it would cope with scottish weather 😂 how long would you say it will take for the tree to have a thicker trunk instead of the firm branch like trunk?
Fiesty, You'll need to prune it from the top to encourage stem thickening. When you see a little horn of new growth pinch it off with your fingers.

Thank you for showing your beautiful avocado seedlings, in your experience when they'll start fruiting?
Mohammad, we'll graft these trees next year and they'll start to fruit quickly, like 2-3 years. But I'll prune the buds for the first few years because I don't want big heavy fruit growing on a little tree that hasn't matured yet...i'd rather they dedicate that energy to growth.

Good luck!

@@SleepyLizard Ok Great, Thanks so much!! Looking forward to more vids from you. Good luck!!
@@marcoverfelt2956 Thanks, now that it's starting to cool down a bit I'll be out there making new vids. I'm working on one about the relationship between avocados and the now extinct giant land sloth.
@@SleepyLizard Seriously..lol
Help
Keep the soil moist yes. Make sure it has drainage too. What climate do you live in?
I’m not sure how lamps work.
What do I do with the extra growth from the bottom of the main branch?
yeah the first pruning can be a little stress inducing but you'll get it done and it's always better for the tree.
Holy smokes in just a few days after cutting the lower branch. And the tree has 5 new growths. Awesome!
How long before it starts to give me fruit
I’m into 1 yr of growing indoor avocados and have questions about fertilizing. How often do I do 6-6-6 and what seasons?
a little spoonful about every 60 days. Put it around the edge of the pot, not close to the stem or you can burn it.
2 seeds with toothpicks last night, grow on! Grafting tape in the mail. Plants in the ground ready for some producing donors!
awesome!
@@SleepyLizard thanks so much!

Hi Toya, Are the trees indoor or outdoor?
@SleepyLizard Hi there, sorry for the late reply.
My avocado plants are currently indoors, but the plan is to put them outside on the balcony.

Toya Darling
This vid explains the whole seed vs grafting thing: ruclips.net/video/jlZ-MVwayQU/видео.html
Good luck and have fun with the trees!
@@SleepyLizard thank you!
If you're referring to planting directly in the ground I'd choose another spot, maybe with higher ground or build a mound. if pots then make sure they have good drainage and use new potting soil
thanks for reaching out.
I think it will.
yes, copper fungicide, or sulfur
Do you think the second sprout on a seed start is an identical twin of the first? Would it be possible for it to have type a and type b sprouts from the same seed? My seed was laying on its side in some rancid water just pure accident I saw it before tossing it out.
nah, it's just a branch. prune the smaller one so the big one gets all the nutrients, otherwise they're just going to stunt each other's growth.
Any advise from a pro?
i'm down in Homestead FL. I'd say plant your trees and give them 6-6-6 fertilizer every 60 days and see what happens
@@SleepyLizard Thank you!
How many times should I add fertilizer to the avocado plant once I have planted it in the soil from the water?
Jaskarn, I do it once every 60 days for the first few years, like half a red solo cup and not too close to the stem, you don't want to burn it.
Thanks
King, sometimes it takes up to 6 weeks. Question for you: have they started sprouting roots at all?
I planted two and they are growing !!!
Vincent, that is great news! what part of the world do you live in?
I have an avocado tree about 3 feet tall. It's putting on leaves at the bottom by the graft. Is that too low to have leaves? How far up should I prune? I would like it to be more bushy rather than a tall tree.
Rene it’s really up to you you can prune it to whatever shape and size you want. have fun with it!
Hi I've got a few trees growing, what shall I feed them please? They're just above 1ft high in pots. Thank you
give them a little 6-6-6 mix fertilizer. Not too close to the trunk...too close and you can burn the roots and trunk...give a few inches distance.
dear sir: I bought two trees, a avacodo, a peach.
First of all, where did you get that big o avocado seed at ?👌🏽😲
Boss Babe, we grew it here on the farm. The seeds from our Waldin variety get even bigger. Here's a vid that talks about the difference between the avocados most people recognize (Hass) and the varieties we grow here: ruclips.net/video/1fG4UfFw3qk/видео.html
There are around 100 commercial varieties of avocados but 95% of the avocados consumed in the US are Hass.

congratulations, that's some great stock to maybe graft to next year. You'll be good with 3 gallon pots, or bigger if you prefer.
@@SleepyLizard Thank you for your quick reply. Have pots orded. Peace and blessings your way.
@@SleepyLizard Thank you for the compliment, I will do as you say. Thank you again.

do you see a little start shaped horn of new growth coming out the top? If you see something like that just pinch it off with your fingers and that should be enough to start some lateral growth.

i mean when i can transfer it from the plant pot to my garden ground?

Thank you so much & sorry to bother you
Fisher, no bother at all.

I have a new one growing so silver lining
sometimes repotting can be traumatic and they wilt and die. Your best bet is to do a few at a time...if you've got 6 or 7 and some of them don't make it you'll have others that did.
