Sounds like a very good day's work. Here in Colorado, it's all about the fires. I've really been impressed with the firefighter command teams that were sent in from the West. They make daily videos and take questions, but best of all, they have instilled confidence that this disaster will be mediated. It has been a tough year.
So far my electronic carb saw has been great, and as I learn more about how carbs work and how to adjust them, it gets less difficult to keep them running well; but fuel injection just makes all of that disappear. I can't find any 500i's available in my area, and I'm sure they're quite expensive, but it will spread, and become more economical over time. Glad to see Stihl's first foray is working well, I'll be interested to see how reliable it is over lots of time and use.
Had a good friend go up to his Dad place in the woods to bring down a very large pine. His Dad held pressure on it with a skid steer, well he went all the way through the trunk and it twisted off the skid steer, and fell clean across his brand new 2020 Dodge 2500 diesel pickup. Now the Insurance Companies are saying lets see what the other Insurance Company is going to do, House and Truck Insurance, should get interesting. The house insurance happened to mention, Why didnt you get a Arborist to remove, he owns around 45 acres and always takes down trees himself. I only wished he had been taken a video. The tree crossed the truck right across the windshield, its totaled, 1400 miles and now scrap sheet metal at best. It was a old growth pine and very large, guess he was lucky it didnt come down on the skid steer, it was totally out of control when it was cut free.
When people call and say they are considering taking trees down themselves, I always recommend that they type in “tree accidents “ on RUclips and watch for about a half hour before making up their mind...
@@HiLineTree These guys have taken down 100s of trees, just a freak accident, at least Jason whos truck got pulverized was the one running the saw, his excuse was, the saw was getting hung up in the cut and he was trying to remove by cutting just a little more, and he went a little to far, I myself would never pay 80,000 for any truck or anything to move me from a to b, but if I did it would not be parked anywhere around where trees were going to be coming down. Hell I would not park my 2,000 dollar pickup anywhere around, I just wish they had it on video.
So happy to see you start the saw like the rest of us 😉 .. I am not sure If am familiar with the disease that was killing these trees . can you do a close-up next time ? I really appreciate the video , it looked like it was a great day to be at work. In tree care Joe .
I am not sure about the 500i yet. I think it would be good as what loggers call a princess saw. ( A backup with low hours ) It has plastic cage crank bearing and the AV mounts are sloppy. I would love to know if the AV mounts bother you over time @Blair or if you just do not care. On the plus side it has a lot of torque and is very lite weight. Maybe I am jelly because I am to cheap to buy one right now. :) Now what is going on with the trees? Oh,... I see, I see. OK :-) Good luck Dan. You will not always be the new guy :D
hotsaws101 did a video on the 550i and he said the av mounts after 7 months were crap and was not impressed the saw flops around like a wet noodle I personally will stick to older saws that are proven and can be repaired with tools by anyone who is mechanically inclined my newest saw is the 661 and if I really wanted to I could put a 660 carb on it and an unlimited coil but the mtronic is fine for me
I had a friend (CTJ) who went woodcutting with me. He was about to fell a 14" poderosa. I stopped him, thinking his pickup truck was too close. He declined to let me move the truck. So he proceeded to fall that pine onto the cab of that truck. But the truck was still driveable and no glass was broken. He left the truck that way, unrepaired, for the rest of his life, saying it was a lesson to himself.
@@arboristBlairGlenn No, Blair, I don't need such a big one, my MS 200 T is enough for my purposes. But I saw in your video, how great, powerful and fuel efficient it is. By the way, I live in a 20 km range of the plant and have a good friend working in the company in Waiblingen near Stuttgart. He sometimes tells me stories and facts like new developments and such, very interesting !
Is there any value in Cypress as lumber? The tree in this particular video seems to have a ton of branches, so in this case.... I'd say too many knots. But, I've heard Cypress to be a good choice for outdoor furniture. Thanks Blair.
Yes! Beautiful wood to work with. Smells good too. I have milled about five thousand linear feet of Monterey Cypress and about three hundred on one Arizona Cypress. Milled an Italian Cypress once and it was full of tight knots. Defiantly a worthwhile wood to use.
Hey Glen love the vids... Was wondering when you fall trees around drive ways and parking lots what or do you protect the surface of concrete or asphalt or a stone parking area. Of is this the owners look out... thx
As Glen says the brush usually softens a landing, particularly when the branches sweep up like this one. Parking lots and roads can usually take quite a beating but some private drives are just an inch or two thick and special care needs to be taken, you are liable unless you get the customer to agree otherwise. Once dismantled to a log the impact can be very severe and it is often best to put Cushion logs on rough ground either side of the road, or leave a thick cushion of branches on the surface you are protecting.
Good question. Start with what they need. They want a smaller tree for low privacy. Planting location is tight with high fence and narrow bed. Cars come through so Tree can’t get too wide. So start with form. Narrow and short. Then you ask what they are looking for. Maybe citrus? They did plant a Mayten

The new guy is a "Hot Shot" fire fighter in the summers so he knows his saws.

Yes, new saw. Been reading and watching reviews and so far, most are positive. About 1300
Nothing like a new toy !!!! Glad to see you smiling after all the stress you've been going through recently.
Thanks, be safe

Guess there is a moral in there somewhere.

Omg all the old timers are getting new fangled saws. 😜
Got to keep up or you get left behind! Who you calling an "old timer"!

500 I don’t need one😆. That model will be crazy$ when it needs part$. I’ll watch from a distance. Stay safe Blair 👋
Well time will tell. I do think the rubber mounts will wear out (anti vibe) but let’s wait and see.
Great saw, Blair.
You have one? How long? Feedback?

The brush usually spreads out enough but it is important to clean up the puncture stubs!

Fuel injected... pretty fancy. That puts my IntelliCarb to shame.
Time will tell
I am going to have to buy one now
You won’t be sorry
Ive not seen a dissatisfied review of the 500i yet, it must be good.
That's a big part of why I bought it.
The 500i totally rips!
New to me but so far, totally agree
is it a good idea to burn tree stumps?
To remove stump? Can’t in this city environment. Grind for replant or plant In between stumps,
For $1700 it better be good
What size bar did you put on it?
Came with a 32 and I'm happy. will run a 36
what would you recommend replacing those cypress with?

Old man runnin'
You talking about me! Whats with this “old man” stuff?
I'm a Husqvarna user. Made me cringe giving this vid a like :P
