I love that there is a hand planer, and no tail stock for drilling the big hole. Gives me hope that it’s not super expensive to start woodturning one day!
It never ceases to amaze me how these wood workers don't take the corners of the glued timber before machining it ... it would make the process so much easier !!
Wow .. 1Mill views! Congrats. I watched it because I wanted to see the Parkside Lathe in action on such a big piece and the quality one can produce with it. Thank you, great video.
With that grain orientation is much better to try to scrap in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation as possible, doing it in the way is shown in the video is to fight against the grain all the time, to cut is better, but deciding to scrape that is the way to go, while the technique used would have been correct with wood grain oriented parallel to the axis. I disagree with you my friend, not a good way to use the scraps given that grain orientation, and the tear out demonstrates it.
I would like to clear something up, I am not a dude, I am a 73 year old lady who is crazy about wood turning. I live in South Africa and I am so glad that I discovered RUclips and wood turning.
@@kobiekaasjager4822 huh? Mmm, huh. And this whole time I totally had you pegged for a dude. Of course, “this whole time” only amounts to less than a minute, so I was probably well on my way towards assuming the opposite as a conclusion without even realizing it. Yeah, let’s go with that.

Bunker tools. I love you. I don’t know why using my bench vice for a lathe glue up never occurred to me. Thanks for the idea. Simple genius. I must be the worlds biggest idiot.
Saludos!!
It is dangerous to not cut off the corners to take the sharp edges sticking out there. It increases the chances of it flying apart. It is also dangerous to do what you did without a tail stock to put pressure on the right side. This increases stability. Given the size of the piece, even if it flew apart it may not cause much damage. I'm talking from experience. I had a piece fly apart and I totally did not expect it. It hit me in the face. What saved me? I had a dust mask that was heavy material and a face shield. It hurt a bit but there was no blood. The piece you made did turn out great. It is very beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Hope this is helpful.
I have had this happen but the piece flew into my chest. No blood and I was wearing a thick apron, however it left a good bruise. I guess I usually have to learn the hard way!
It's a shame you didn't fill the holes on the base at the end, but..... that is a really really good end result, especially just using very entry level tools and not working from some big expensive workshop with ££££s worth of equipment. Bravo Bunkertools. Bravo. 👏👏
Great video. Just a little tip for everybody, you only need to glue one side of the joining pieces. Or else you'll have a lot more excess glue to deal with
As a former member of the trucking business I would like to caution you of the caustic chemicals and poisons that I've seen leaking from drums and containers on to wooden pallets. You should always use caution with this wood because you have no idea where it has been and what it has been contacted by.
@@trav75 Very few of them in Europe are hardwood. Some, but few, and those are almost always proprietary, which means they are owned by the pallet company and the receiver can't give them to you. A hardwood pallet is quite find in Europe...
This is my introduction to your channel and I immediately subscribed after seeing the end results! Mesmerizing. Beautiful. Handsome. A work of art. I love, not only, the thickness of the piece but how every piece of wood brings out the beauty in every other piece. 😀
Nice end result, please be careful. Always use the tail stock, until you cannot. It’s impossible to be sure of the glue bond. With the tail stock you have the chance to see this before it separates into your face. If you only buy one other tool, buy a bowl gouge. Use this on the interior (you could make the whole piece with it) putting a spindle gouge inside could have been catastrophic for you if it had a “catch” on the grain of the wood. 😉 Enjoy your lathe!
Thank you very much for your comment. I am aware of the points you mention, I am waiting to acquire a new turning equipment, including gouges. I'm going to delve into the world of wood turning and learn! Greetings and thanks

My favorite part of these woodturning videos is when they put the stain on the piece and the wood grain just comes alive!!! 😊
It never ceases to amaze me how these wood workers don't take the corners of the glued timber before machining it ... it would make the process so much easier !!
Especially when they leave the tail stock out of the equation :-(
