After being on RUclips for 8+ years, I can definitely say that the most valuable thing I can give my audience is authenticity and relatability. The relationship I have cultivated with my viewers is so important to me! I have scaled down on overly editing and just share my life.
The most valuable thing is the niche itself, what you are bringing to the table. What you have to offer. If it's cooking then it's cooking, if it's makeup then it's makeup, if it's fitness then it's fitness. Everything else is secondary: the editing, the background and lighting, the special effects. People are tired of channels that have nothing to actually offer but make it seem like they are high quality because of the shiny sparkle. You have to make the niche the center of attention of the channel instead of distracting the audience with music and lights and special effects.
I noticed some creators went from humble and genuine to Hollywood after becoming famous. The thumbnail shots are the first to change. Screen box gets bigger and the ego shows
I started turning on the camera and just talking through the how to of *whatever I'm doing in the kitchen,* and then it turns out it's a whole v i b e. Lol, who knew us grandmas would still rock, just by being ourselves😂🎉
I grew my channel from 0 to 11,000 subs in 9 months and the #1 thing I hear is how AUTHENTIC it is. Talk to people, don't talk at people and connect with the human on the other side. And just be human. That's the winning strategy for real success
Ive been noticing this, I think you are totally right about the authenticity aspect, along with that I think lonely people spending tons of time online are also feeling they are really with a friend or mentor/grandfather for 20 mins which must be very appealing
100%, you'll be shocked at what people watch these days for loneliness...Even videos of people vacuuming, as it reminds them of being at home. loneliness is going to be a big problem to most people in future in my opinion.

great video, for whoever wants to start from zero consider that: - you still do need to speak fairly well (way above average) going on a tangent is ok, adding zero value while having mmm, ahhhh, I mean... is not - YT can detect if your content can be just listened to and not watched directly, if that's the case they won't push your videos because they know you won't watch ads. so at the beginning you do need to add visuals and yes being interesting is a must

I enjoy those types of videos. Where someone's just being real, and gives you a look at something through their lens. And their lens is interesting in some way. Dry creek for example, it quickly becomes clear that he has a great deal of knowledge about life, and it gives him a unique lens on things so when he shares how he sees things it feels valuable. A lot like sitting down with someone you connect with and or want to learn from, and conversing. Yea it's one-sided but it works, the comments are sufficient.

RUclips has been my favorite platform for a while because there's so many different kinds of content, basically for every person on earth. That's what made me start my own vlog channel by the end of 2023 and I'm really happy that I did. It's a slow grow, but it has taught me a lot about being consistent, letting go of judgement towards myself and of course to edit lol😅 It's fun, love it.
I agree totally. I've noticed this myself over the past two years. Blogging, not Vlogging, started this way several years ago. It was an escape from the heavily edited media and into the personal thoughts of people. As time went on, polished blogs and professional-style websites started to take hold and Google's curation of content via their algorithm rewarded the polished style of media and pushed the personal style of blogging out the door. Now that fewer people read and would rather watch videos, this happened in the vlog space. Now, I myself see the same thing. People want authenticity. People are scared of the AI monster coming to get them and are scratching and clawing for clues as to what is authentic and real. They want content like they are listening to a person rather than a machine. If anything good comes out of this AI mess it will be a return to the old days when people searched for true, personal connection on the web. I cant wait. Thanks for your video.
I just wanted to say thank you for making this video. It inspired me to start trying out this format on my channel. Wow, so much easier to edit lol. 30 minutes of talking to the camera, about an hour of editing and I've got myself a nice 20min video. I'm about to premiere it now and I'm excited to see the results.
I’ve watched literally thousands of videos on “how to RUclips” over the last year since I started my channel. THIS insight is probably the single thing that will help me grow to my potential in 2025 after floundering the past few months. I’ve been planning a major shift in style/delivery this year but I couldn’t quite put my finger on exactly what I was going for that would also be realistic for me as a busy mom. Thank you so much. You explained the approach to “simple but purposeful” perfectly. Just subscribed!
What I've been doing for about 4 years... No massive growth, but I've made some good friends who seem to think I'm doing something valuable. I've looked into using OBS studio for teaching, and maybe someday I'll do that. But I seem to do best when I just turn the camera on and share what's been on my mind, what I've been studying, what matters most to me.
This is a good insight Gareth. 👏 I have just started my new vlogging channel 2 weeks ago and I'll keep this in mind. But it is my 3rd attempt and definitely would be applying what I have learned from many creators and vloggers like you. I guess the key points here are to be authentic, interesting and relatable. ✨❤
Connection is everything! I find that all the feedback I get talks about how much they love authenticity and honesty. People are really tired of being made to feel inadequate.
Glad i stumbled on your channel, I have been procrastinating for far too long & am feeling motivated. My goal is to start my channel & upload my first video before this week ends ❤️🔥
Awesome video brother, authentic videos are replacing the tired pranks and the forced drama influencers have made these past 5 years. Hollywood TV and movies are gone, the aithentic wise men are back like a simple honest old school conversation btween friend's.
Tangental meandering. This is exactly my style, and just what I had planned for my channel. Musings about waking-up and creative pursuit and sharing of wisdom on the other side of 60! So not grandpa, but close!
This is really interesting. I have an unpolished RUclips channel which is doing okay for me and these are the channels I like to follow. Great information, thank you.
Really wonderful talk. I have watched 2 of your videos in its entirety, they are very good. I have noticed something, you have no background music playing nor you ask people to subscribe to your channel, which proves that content is still the king. People will automatically subscribe & want to see you again. Thanks for your insight.
Amazing, exactly what affirms what I’ve been creating but now tying both of my purposes is genius!! Started to think i needed to choose either style but absolutely 💯 what I’ve been seeing and amassing now I’ll share
I have a small channel which is focused on 80s and 90s pop culture and nostalgia, but I’ve been looking for ways to integrate in some lifestyle vlog type stuff, so this was super helpful. Thank you!
Thank you for your keen observations. I’m a line dance teacher documenting my behind the scenes on RUclips and sharing what I learn about YouTubing along the way. Subscribed to hear more.
I noticed the same thing a few months ago, and I shifted my mindset when it comes to creating RUclips videos. I even talked about my findings, but not as eloquently as you have. There are many more examples of this currently taking over RUclips, and you've even included a few that I already follow. If only my camera presence and public speaking were as good as yours!
Thank you for this encouragement. I really airboat seeing other channels that have multiple topics of content, because that's what I do and I'm still trying to figure that out
Very inspiring video. I've been thinking of doing a vlog, and my life is of interest to a lot of folks. You have given me some key ideas that will help me pull this off! Thanks.
I’m all for Grandpa/Grandma Style! I’ve been doing a lot more of this style without even knowing it 😂 I think of it as more documenting a process over being over produced
I have been doing a mixture of live, casually talking my thoughts and some more planned, mostly about grief or mental health. I’m still trying to find my way. This has been useful Thankyou
I agree. On our live streams during the 2020/2021 lockdowns - everything (the music/live chat/errors etc) went out without editing. Presenting a perfect scenario is certainly a style (particularly with music) that audiences like. Many of our sofa chats / busks generated positive feedback from regulars to the channel.
@ We ended up going back to ‘live’ work as soon as businesses opened up again. I think we did 88 consecutive weekly streams in all. In the crazy time of 2020/2021 it was the one positive. Getting a lot of older people on line and set up to join live chat was a task 🤣, and a steep learning curve with an old iPad…
Part of my fear of stepping into making content was feeling like things can feel too manufactured. I had wanted to make content after winning the jiu-jitsu world championships, but I was kind of feeling stuck. Seeing this kind of approach has given me the confidence to start making content! Thanks for highlighting this new trend!
I hardly edit, I just grab the camera and chat like I would to a friend. it’s the only way I could do it as a mom with a 9-5, and a side hustle. Plus I want/need time to relax ❤
Great value. I have run into your video by chance, but your style follows your message - this is real life and real advice I could get from a friend over coffee. I will definitely use it.
Your video by far is one of the best that I’ve seen in a long time! Thank you for all of your suggestions! I think 2025 is going to be the year that I start and stick to RUclips!
Needs a second layer is right. And one that adds value to the viewer, at least is intriguing and interesting to watch. Thanks for the viewpoint, and one that I believe is correct for the year 2025.
Omg this is literally what came to me to do as a business owner and family woman. I’ve struggled to be consistent because of all I have going on so doing talking head is nearly impossible. I’ve decided to just speak on the topics while doing what I’m doing.
As a grandfather of 3, I guess I’ve mastered the class😂😂. Seriously, though, I’ve seen guys my age walk along a creek and complain about life. They get a million views with other guys complaining in the comments. I’m too happy so will never be viral!
I think it might be a branch of the podcast. I love these types of videos because I can put them on with headphones and get to my chores around the house and still get the whole idea of the video without actually watching it
This is hilarious. This is called Gen X conversation. The ability to hold a topic and share the depth of life wisdom. Its like when Millennials discovered vinyl. Now Gen Z are celebrating coffee with no gadgets in a Cafe. Imagine that? People are tired of high-end fast polished sales pitches thinly disguised as interviews delivered by 20 year olds.
I once heard a comment “a channel about everything is a channel about nothing” “First you get paid for what you do, then you get paid for what you know, and eventually, if you’re lucky, you get paid for who you are.”
Authentic connection is definitely important now on YT. I've been meandering as a content creator for a few years, mostly because it's taken some time for me to trust that it's ok to be completely authentic, and that what I'm feeling and hearing from God to do is relevant to SOMEBODY. That's all that matters. Personally I can't stand fast edits, or even really intricate editing unless the video is about entertainment. If it's about a message, all that editing actually takes away from the message. Interesting to watch online culture evolve. Thanks for sharing this video!
Yes oldschool not missing the point or a new strat that is how it used to go down (Rennetto etc) when youtube was more of a "Community" and folks actually started coming together in discussions or topics or just as personalities of their own sharing and interacting.
Hmm Thank you very much! As a speaker and author who's reached some degree of notariety and popularity.... I'm not saying this to promote myself, not at all but at a certain point you realize in life you've arrived or made huge mistakes. I've done quite a bit of both. And after viewing this input it challenged me to keep coming back to the things that people found most popular about my experiences and stories. Often as a speaker you tend to try and be like somebody. And the more you try and be like somebody the less you are true to yourself. I'm realizing more and more that this is the kind of thing that truly interests people. I think our world is full of people accumulating data. But there's a huge mistake there. Information does not make you smarter in fact it may only fool you. Taking on friendships and lovers means forgiving and leaving a bit of danger to the whole equation. You learn compassion and loyalty by being stretched, and deciding to live outside of the realm of pure information. Being human is the connecting point and our world so often misses that need.

That's what made me start my own vlog channel by the end of 2023 and I'm really happy that I did. It's a slow grow, but it has taught me a lot about being consistent, letting go of judgement towards myself and of course to edit lol😅
It's fun, love it.
That's great, and yes can be slow at the start. But I think things are getting easier
Agreed!
Outstanding video, earned my sub! Look forward to watching more 👊
Welcome aboard! Are you vlogging? Curious to know what type of content you would like to see more of? 😎
Awesome let us know how it goes! You are already smashing it 👏
Love it. This is the second video of yours that I’ve seen. Really love how you get to the point.
Appreciate you checking it out 🙏
I’ve watched literally thousands of videos on “how to RUclips” over the last year since I started my channel.
Awesome! Glad it helped keep us posted and good luck 🙌
Keep on doing you, it’s working!
@garethlamb Thank you
This is a good insight Gareth. 👏 I have just started my new vlogging channel 2 weeks ago and I'll keep this in mind. But it is my 3rd attempt and definitely would be applying what I have learned from many creators and vloggers like you.
I guess the key points here are to be authentic, interesting and relatable. ✨❤
You've got this! yes, though you also what to find your topic and avatar
Connection is everything! I find that all the feedback I get talks about how much they love authenticity and honesty. People are really tired of being made to feel inadequate.
Agreed!
Glad i stumbled on your channel, I have been procrastinating for far too long & am feeling motivated. My goal is to start my channel & upload my first video before this week ends ❤️🔥
Yes! Go for it!
Awesome video brother, authentic videos are replacing the tired pranks and the forced drama influencers have made these past 5 years. Hollywood TV and movies are gone, the aithentic wise men are back like a simple honest old school conversation btween friend's.
Totally. The new wave is about the authenticity!
Great video, explanation, and advice. Really got me thinking.
😎
Tangental meandering. This is exactly my style, and just what I had planned for my channel. Musings about waking-up and creative pursuit and sharing of wisdom on the other side of 60! So not grandpa, but close!
Sounds good 😊
Authenticity 👍🏼
😎
This is really interesting. I have an unpolished RUclips channel which is doing okay for me and these are the channels I like to follow. Great information, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed. Looks like your channel is doing well 🙌
It's refreshing to see that this type of content is coming back!
Agreed!
Really wonderful talk. I have watched 2 of your videos in its entirety, they are very good. I have noticed something, you have no background music playing nor you ask people to subscribe to your channel, which proves that content is still the king. People will automatically subscribe & want to see you again. Thanks for your insight.
Yes no need to ask, people know what to do 😉
Amazing, exactly what affirms what I’ve been creating but now tying both of my purposes is genius!! Started to think i needed to choose either style but absolutely 💯 what I’ve been seeing and amassing now I’ll share
Let’s go! 💯
This was definitely helpful! Watching this gave me a couple of more ideas, I just have to implement it! 🙌🏾
Awesome 🙌
Well said! Just started my channel a week or so ago. This helped to affirm what I had in mind. "Daily farm life"
Awesome congrats!
Love this is coming back! I started vlogging in 2014 and i really miss those days!
It’s nice to see it coming back! 🙌
I have a small channel which is focused on 80s and 90s pop culture and nostalgia, but I’ve been looking for ways to integrate in some lifestyle vlog type stuff, so this was super helpful. Thank you!
Glad it helped
Thank you for your keen observations. I’m a line dance teacher documenting my behind the scenes on RUclips and sharing what I learn about YouTubing along the way. Subscribed to hear more.
That sounds like a great combination for a channel! POV is a great add on for vlog style content 🙌
You’ll get there, I’m not natural I’ve had to create thousands of videos to just be ok. Trust If an introvert like me can do it I’m sure you can. 👌
You are correct. My 2nd video ever was unedited and on a niche subject. I'm shocked it just passed 100k views.
Wow! That’s great 🙌
Thank you Gateth, might try it out
Go for it
More to your point about being interesting; you first have to be interesTED. In something - anything that lights you up. That will come across
100%
Thank you for this encouragement. I really airboat seeing other channels that have multiple topics of content, because that's what I do and I'm still trying to figure that out
I wouldn't have many topics but overlapping ones. You don't want to be a generalist channel
Very inspiring video. I've been thinking of doing a vlog, and my life is of interest to a lot of folks. You have given me some key ideas that will help me pull this off! Thanks.
Awesome to hear you're taking action! 💪
I’m all for Grandpa/Grandma Style! I’ve been doing a lot more of this style without even knowing it 😂 I think of it as more documenting a process over being over produced
POV is a great way to add a second layer to the vlog 😎
Been thinking about doing this type of content, I love the casual nature of it, while also getting across information/hot takes/educational stuff
Go for it! Keep it authentic, and don't be afraid to experiment! 😎
Agreed! I’ve noticed Grandpa styled talking head videos with a casual change of scenery in each video translates really well for viewers
It's definitely a good format for both creator and viewer!
I have been doing a mixture of live, casually talking my thoughts and some more planned, mostly about grief or mental health. I’m still trying to find my way. This has been useful Thankyou
Glad it helped, good luck with the channel
@ Thankyou!
Very insightful Gareth! As someone with minimal time to edit, I find this Grandpa method to be very enticing. It's very 80-20 as well :)
Yeah, keep it simple. Hard enough to get content out
I agree. On our live streams during the 2020/2021 lockdowns - everything (the music/live chat/errors etc) went out without editing. Presenting a perfect scenario is certainly a style (particularly with music) that audiences like. Many of our sofa chats / busks generated positive feedback from regulars to the channel.
Did you keep doing them?
Awesome 🙌
I hardly edit, I just grab the camera and chat like I would to a friend. it’s the only way I could do it as a mom with a 9-5, and a side hustle. Plus I want/need time to relax ❤
That's the way to go
I’m 78.
The grandpa method should work out just fine.
See you in the forest.
🙏🌲🙏
haha love it
Thank you so much. Wanting to start a channel and also in a very grounded way. Following you now, really good down to earth delivery, frndly
Thanks
Great value. I have run into your video by chance, but your style follows your message - this is real life and real advice I could get from a friend over coffee. I will definitely use it.
Glad it was helpful! 😎
Your video by far is one of the best that I’ve seen in a long time! Thank you for all of your suggestions! I think 2025 is going to be the year that I start and stick to RUclips!
Awesome to hear! 💪
Needs a second layer is right. And one that adds value to the viewer, at least is intriguing and interesting to watch. Thanks for the viewpoint, and one that I believe is correct for the year 2025.
🙌
Omg this is literally what came to me to do as a business owner and family woman. I’ve struggled to be consistent because of all I have going on so doing talking head is nearly impossible. I’ve decided to just speak on the topics while doing what I’m doing.
Perfect! Try to make sure it’s still on the topic of your channel and avatar. But imperfect action all the way
Just started my channel for the first time. 2025 is the YEAR for US ALL! Lets go!
Dwayne with Dry Creek is friggin awesome! down to earth common sense.
Right!
As a grandfather of 3, I guess I’ve mastered the class😂😂. Seriously, though, I’ve seen guys my age walk along a creek and complain about life. They get a million views with other guys complaining in the comments. I’m too happy so will never be viral!
😅
I think it might be a branch of the podcast. I love these types of videos because I can put them on with headphones and get to my chores around the house and still get the whole idea of the video without actually watching it
🙌
Thank you for this! It allows to see things from a different perspective
Glad you enjoyed it!
Grandpa Style! 😂 made my day!
😅
This is hilarious. This is called Gen X conversation. The ability to hold a topic and share the depth of life wisdom. Its like when Millennials discovered vinyl. Now Gen Z are celebrating coffee with no gadgets in a Cafe. Imagine that? People are tired of high-end fast polished sales pitches thinly disguised as interviews delivered by 20 year olds.
everything comes full circle 😅
Lol I've been doing that style since 2016. Been very good for grew to over 130,000 subs.
Awesome 🙌
This was a really helpful breakdown for a beginner like me😌
Glad it helped
Since I AM a grandfather… this sounds great.😂
😅
Thank you for the valuable advice Gareth, I will definitely take this onboard for my videos, and put in that second layer 🙂
Awesome! Let me know how it works out for you.
I once heard a comment “a channel about everything is a channel about nothing”
“First you get paid for what you do, then you get paid for what you know, and eventually, if you’re lucky, you get paid for who you are.”
Yeah I like these quotes
Love this❤
😎
this is what i miss! id love to be a vlogger!!! i doubt anyone would watch but how fun would it be!
You’d be surprised what people watch, give it a go
Authentic connection is definitely important now on YT.
Glad it resonated.
I started my RUclips channel today!! All I have to offer is authenticity!!
That's the place to start 🙌
KEEP up with the great content and keep pushing through the RUclips grind
😎
@garethlamb always willing to help other RUclipsrs
Yes oldschool not missing the point or a new strat that is how it used to go down (Rennetto etc) when youtube was more of a "Community" and folks actually started coming together in discussions or topics or just as personalities of their own sharing and interacting.
It's more about adding a second layer to your vlog. but yes old school is back 🙌
Hmm Thank you very much!
Great point about information vs. connection. The more we strive for truth in ourselves, the more we find it in others. Thanks for sharing 🙌
I really liked your video, i think its difficult to decide on niche and topic so i end up with a little bit of everything. Have a great day! :)
