The thing is that the activists don't understand is that in the wild most of those animals wouldn't live longer than a couple of years. Most would die being ripped apart by wolves, bears, or some other predator. Those animals live longer happier lives living on a farm than they ever would in the wild.
No one is asking them to go in the wild, just to not be killed.
Happier lives? Please watch some videos of farm investigations and you will see that animals on factory farms have the worst lives imaginable. The animals are only here because humans breed 80 billion of them in to existence every year. So as the consumption of animal products declines, so will the amount of animals being bred in to existence. They will slowly die out. The last few could always go to sanctuaries. So they wouldn’t die in the wild. They wouldn’t be here going through hell.

It is extremely biased of humans to think that it’s OK to kill plants but not animals. We don’t operate on the same plane as plants and we still don’t understand a lot about how they work. Here are some things we do know - Plants are “aware quote of their surroundings. Plants can communicate with one another via pheromones and electrical signals through fungi in the soil. Some plants can live for thousands and thousands of years. Plants have a very very complex interconnections with insects certain mammals other plants and abiotic environmental factors. Basically, plants are amazing.
You cannot justify killing plants over animals because they don’t have eyes that look at you or the ability to move freely. Because you lack the ability to communicate with them and they feel so different from us does not place them lower in the pecking order.
It’s good to practice compassion for other beings, and I would encourage anyone to offset any negative impact their life has on others by say, planting a garden and providing habitat for other animals. I find that many vegans Live in a delusion where they can’t accept the fact that their life requires other lives to be taken. There’s a correlation between living in a city and veganism because you are fundamentally disconnected from what it means to provide for yourself.
It’s a large responsibility to be a human. We can be the givers or takers of life. Stewards of the environment or destructors. What matters the most though are your actions as a whole. I’m in organic farmer who produces food for other humans. I’ve taken a10 acre plot of land and transformed it into an incredibly productive, diverse, healthy ecosystem. I could not have done it without animals. I would not be able to Produce nearly the amount of calories per acre that I do if I did not utilize animals. Animals are part of a regenerative agricultural system. Not to mention that they are incredibly nourishing and in fact medicinal to the human body if you get good quality meat. Our ancestors bread these animals to be domesticated for our use just as they did to all of our food crops. These animals would not even exist if it weren’t for humans. Would it be a crime then to never allow them to experience life?
So in summary, something is going to die in order for you to live. It is a fact of life that you will have to confront at some point or another. It’s good to minimize needless suffering and to be a conscious consumer. Buy meat from small organic farmers. If you really want to do something good for animal welfare, vote with your dollar for farmers that treat animals ethically. When you abstain from eating meat you in effect don’t vote. Spend some time in nature and get to understand the food web. We are all part of it.
Plants are not sentient. They do not feel pain. They do not have a central nervous system, and they do not have a brain. They don't live a subjective reality. Sure, they react to stimuli from their surroundings, but I can say the same thing about water that's reacting to another substance chemically. Is the water then a living thing?

I have a very strong botanical background. I’ve been working with plants for decades...I can tell you that we DONT have plants as figured out as you think we do. It is an animalian bias to think they are lesser beings than us because they lack a brain or central nervous system. Plants have been evolving on a very different path than animals since we diverged. What is to say that their equivalent of a “brains” is something we don’t understand yet? Latest discoveries are showing that mycorhizzal fungi of the soil acts as an interconnecting web that links plants together. Plants have recently been shown to share nutrients and electrical signals to other plants via this fungal connection. That’s starting to sound a bit like a central nervous system yeah?
Some plants are very highly evolved beings...because we lack the ability to fully understand them yet doesn’t give you moral grounds to justify killing them over animals. I love plants, I’ve dedicated my life to growing them, but I also realize that some need to die in order for others to live. Death of one being brings life to another. The same goes for animals.
