Japanese carmakers Honda and Nissan plan to join forces in a merger that would create the world’s third-largest carmaker by sales. Honda’s chief executive Toshihiro Mibe said the merger would put the company in a better position to compete against Chinese carmakers like BYD, and rising US electric vehicle manufacturers like Tesla. Mitsubishi Motors, already a partner of Nissan, also said it was considering joining the capital tie-up.

This merger is far better compared to Nissan - Renault one. Renault really ruin Nissan

You guys are crazy to say Mitsubishi are in ruin. They have a long run on EV. Nissan just can't deal with the demands and competes with the rest.
Having all 3 together, Honda will top 1 and Mitsubishi might get a chance to shine even brighter with their already innovation.
So enough said, so just chill back and watch it will unfold. But I think 2026 is a bit late. They should move fast and make it happen in 2025, or Nissan and Mitsubishi will fall on their faces.

Hope japanese car makers get better designers. Their cars look like they were designed for old people. Chinese cars design these days blows every car maker out of the water. But im still not considering buying chinese brands due to questions in reliability, parts availability, and resale value. Though chinese evs are very tempting. BYD sealion cost only as much as a nissan subcompact car and byd includes all options
The sporty design of the previous gen Civic was perfect for young people. The new model just looks like a smaller boring Accord, which doesn’t really attract anyone. Younger people want a smaller sporty looking model as their first car, while older people want a bigger car that’s not too flashy.
The Xiaomi SU7 is literally a Porsche Taycan and McLaren 720s copycat.
@albertteng1191
While it's true that Chinese car designs have evolved recently, Japanese automakers have also made significant strides in design. For example, models like the Toyota Crown, Nissan Ariya, and Honda e showcase innovative designs that appeal to a broader audience. In terms of reliability, Japanese cars have a long-standing reputation for durability and stability, with strong resale value and readily available parts. On the other hand, Chinese EVs like the BYD Sealion are attractive due to their price and feature-rich options, but concerns about long-term reliability, parts availability, and resale value still persist. Ultimately, both markets offer advantages, but the value and trust associated with Japanese cars remain important factors for many consumers, still holding strong appeal.
Chinese manufacturers make competition in automotive industry seem more interesting. I hope the customers get benefit from this new paradigm, and better product from japan and europe

Nissan is in trouble again and Honda is stagnant. They have stopped in time and lost ground. The much-loved capitalism does not forgive. The world's consumers are grateful for free competition!
@alemelo3070
While Nissan and Honda may be facing tough times, they are not stagnating. In fact, both companies are actively pushing forward with new technologies and models, with Honda focusing on the EV market and autonomous driving development. Nissan is also introducing exciting vehicles like the new "Ariya" and "Fairlady Z," showing clear progress. Moreover, Japanese cars continue to provide high quality and reliability, maintaining strong consumer support. While it's true that capitalism drives competition and innovation, Japanese automakers remain firmly positioned to lead and continue evolving in this competitive landscape.
@@aiue-g9fThe qualities of Japanese cars are unquestionable. However, the difficulty and delay in making decisions are causing Japan to lose market share. Korea and especially China today are doing the same thing that Japan did 50 years ago. And a big mistake was to transfer 100% of their automotive technology abroad over the decades.
It happened with electronics and now with the automotive sector. Japanese politicians need to be more agile in their policies. And Japanese companies need to be the same or they will disappear in the international market.
I particularly love the Skyline, Silvia, Accord or even the Cube. But the market doesn't live on memories.
I think this is for SURVIVAL
The problem is Japanese companies are too stuck in their ways. Honda is really the only one in that group that has a chance to help them succeed and they need to figure it out fast or this merger is just going to drag them down.
Toyota is still killing it though - right?
I've always been team Honda and a huge fan of them but lately their vehicles are much too overpriced and underwhelming to say the least. It makes me sad because I personally see less Hondas on the road than before and where I live Mazdas are flourishing, I'm seeing more and more of them. I don't see Honda going out of business (ever) but they are stagnating and need to up their game if they want to remain competitive.
Because they value their vehicle like it is top notch. Mazda has been undercutting their price for years and it works.
We wanted the Honda CRV, but to get anything that Mazda offers, expect $5k+ more.

Japan, South Korea & China trade with own currency, no restriction market access & visa free travel. Under this presetting, many Chinese open battery factories in Japan etc, then Japanese car maker can source batteries at low cost.
Too little too late, I give them 5 years before bankruptcy.
Just because Tesla and Chinese EV companies are on the rise, you think some of the most reliable and high-quality vehicle manufacturers on the market will go bankrupt in five years? Who do you think you are, some kind of portfolio manager? EVs may be trendy right now, but they are far from being truly reliable cars. EV technology is just beginning to gain traction, but compared to the century-old tradition of manufacturing in the traditional auto industry, EVs are still lacking. Without government support, EVs wouldn’t be where they are today. Traditional automakers produce far superior products.
Take Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi, for example. Do you know who makes some of the best vehicles in the world aside from the Germans? The Japanese. Saying they’ll go bankrupt is absurd. Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi are leaders in the machinery industry. Tesla, on the other hand, is essentially a battery company, not a true vehicle manufacturer. Cars aren’t just about engines-they are complex machines. Auto companies invest hundreds of billions of dollars every year to develop every single component, even down to the tires. Tesla has around 20 years of experience, but that’s a fraction compared to these established brands.
As for Chinese EVs, they dominate the Chinese market but are far from being competitive in the American and European markets. Europeans won’t be driving Asian-made vehicles anytime soon-especially not Chinese ones-unless their own economies face major setbacks. Japanese brands, however, have consistently earned global respect.
The merger of Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi is not a sign of failure; it’s a strategic move to adapt to current trends. They’re merging their vehicle divisions to create a new automotive company, but their other industrial equipment divisions remain separate and highly successful. In fact, their products are some of the best on the market.
So why don’t you reconsider your argument before making such baseless claims?

We shall see how great the quality of Chinese cars are in 3 to 5 years time. Remember Japan are making cars that are reliable to last more than 5 to 10 years. But if Chinese cars prove better in the long run, I will consider it also.
