taught a student who had control issues (ie. always in trouble) how to crochet. he would put the yarn in his pocket and crochet in the hallway. other guys would make fun of him. his response? "you're just jealous because you don't know how". principal loved it. i will continue to say that it is therapy.

HOT DAM...FIRST OF ALL FOLKS....there is Nowhere on the yarn label that states: "ONLY USED BY WOMEN"...nor does the Kitchen garbage can label state: "ONLY EMPTIED BY MEN".....The yarn does not give one dam who USES IT to make something with. Nor is there nothing UNLADY LIKE to empty a trash can. So help each other out folks and POOL THE WORK LOADS....Anyone can Do ANYTHING they wish to put their mind to....and stop letting other people and society speak your mind for you....
.Great job my friend. I am near 70, white - big fella here with grown grandkids...I've been crocheting over 60 yrs...and I am very fast at it. My own designs...when I do them.
Hats off to you sir....Keep up this GREAT RELAXER of a hobby that you and you alone enjoy...and to hell with what anyone else has to say. Atleast you are making use of your time and in a lucrative way as well. I've managed to keep my Manliness INTACT...and sure as hell not worried about my sexuality either. Well, it's nice to see (and hear) from another 'brother' who 'openly' crochets. I've been crocheting for more that 40 years (since I was 17). I do have to admit that I didn't start crocheting on the buses and subways until I was I my 40's (by that time, didn't give a shit what people thought! I started volunteering at different senior centers, word got out, and I got the title 'That Crochet Guy'!

My grandma taught this little boy how to crochet when he was five years old. I'm a 70 year old man now and still love and do it every day. I always have one or more hats in progress and carry my crochet bag with me when I leave the house and drive somewhere. If I have to chill my heels somewhere like the auto shop or doctor's office I pull out the piece and crochet. Sometimes I get very little done because women AND men start up conversations about it. Anywhere from questions or sharing their crochet projects. And because of that we then get into longer conversations about all kinds of other stuff. On top of that I have gotten the nick name around town of ' Knotty Boy' because I carry that bag everywhere. I sell my hats locally and decided to build a web site ..... called Knotty Boy. Fun things happen when you are open and share your passion.

I love that you started there, cuz it’s a frustration all crocheters understand. I always keep a couple working projects in my car so I have one in hand. Aye, I'm in a similar same boat. I started crocheting a couple of months ago and I take it to school regardless of what the other kids think. Most people will ask if you're knitting, but once in a blue moon you'll meet that one person who asks you "what are you crocheting." I like taking my crochet out because people are way more likely to be interested then to judge me, and I kind of get to be that one unique kid who is doing something different.

I crochet anywhere and everywhere too. It's relaxing and I don't get bored with just sitting around. It's also a great way to meet people, not that this is what I use it for... I craft because I want to craft! - but it's a perk. I like people. I have so many - men, women, children, young and old, of all races - who want to know what I am doing and making. I usually give a short answer, in case the question is just one of those 'How are you?' questions where a real answer is not truly wanted, but often I find myself answering questions, demonstrating basic techniques, showing types of yarn (people want to see and touch, I let them), and giving people ideas on how they can start crafting too. Good for you for encouraging people to be creative!

I crochet and knit, along with several other fiber manipulating arts. I've been crocheting for about fifty years now! I've knit in the subway in NYC when visiting the city and also when traveling by train in Europe. Since I'm a "flufffy" middle-aged woman, knitting in public makes me approachable, so I've had interesting conversations started by people curious about what I was doing. Being a bit of an exhibitionist, I'm often working on socks, so that fistful of teeny needles is certainly attention getting! I usually get the "I wouldn't have the patience (or time) to do that!" Little do they know that I'm not a patient person; knitting or crocheting gives me something to do! And as for not having the time, well, you know the answer to that one already. We both have the same amount of time sitting here on the train. When I get off, I'll have another inch or two of what I'm working on completed! What will the "no time" commenter have?

Man, that was totally beautiful. "No, I'm not doing any of that; I crochet." That quote is the bomb. I especially like it that our man is not attributing his success in avoiding peer pressure to some mythical higher creature, but instead to his own human developed talent.

There's no reason to bring religion into it. His grandma probably taught him that as well, and he might be offended in you saying "mythical." Who are you to say what's really real anyway? This world seems pretty fake to me actually, like an object oriented computer program. Lots of code reuse, and the code is our DNA.

Im sure more heads turn for a male than a female who’s crocheting! I crochet too in the subway on the 6 train or the A and C trains or metro north. Saves me a lot of battery life on my cell! People are so interested. They stair or watch, some approach and ask questions. I taught myself last summer. Made just enough progress just on time for covid. I been doing doilies. I’d love to do clothing or articles of clothing but that will take some real math and measuring. For now I wanna go from intricate flat doilies to textured doilies where the stitches pop out more. It’s like your musical sound playing the piano with one hand can sound good but using both hands?! It’s much richer, more detailed, more compleat sounding. That next level. I tried knitting but it’s a two handed craft and it’s not as flowing to me as crochet is using one hand one hook. Maybe after a lil more with crocheting some garments I can try a simple scarf in knit and really buckle down and get through it. If I don’t like it I don’t like it but it’s good to at least get the understanding of it. It’s only a hobby so I can afford to like one and not do the other.
What many don’t realize is men did the crocheting of clothing long ago before machinery came along. By then I think it became more of a hobby after it was a skill. So men should never be embarrassed to crochet. It’s a skill. Not just a hobby. It only became a hobby after machines came along.
It’s very relaxing and you can crochet for as long or short of a time you choose. It’s a fairly cheap hobby to start and self teaching is very doable. No books are needed. Just thread, proper hook size and RUclips. That’s how I got started. Learned enough and took pictures of doily patterns on Pinterest and 20 doilies later I can say I’m confident enough in my skills to where I can teach another if asked to.

I lived watching people watching you , that in itself is an interesting video .I just learned to crotchet at age 54, and I'm loving it .I create all sorts of things so I'm lucky .

I'm loving it babyyyyy!!! You are the REAL MAN...LOVING YOU. I was knitting on the bus one day myself and made many friends every time..lol. The bus is where it's at. Someone said to me that she didn't know that people still knit. I was like "really". :( It really perks up my inside person (proudness) to bring my bag of yarn and go for it on all public areas. I never cared what someone thinks. Who cares? It's art. People are only watch things they don't understand and are visually learning what YOU KNOW.

Ppl used to come up to Mom and asked "what are you knitting?" And she used to say "I'm crocheting" In a voice that sounded like she wanted to smack them, but she has gotten better through the years.

This was funny. “ I don’t care enough to stop crocheting “. People get bothered when they can’t put in you in A box.

I am 19 and picked up crochet this year. my old teacher actually introduced me to it and finally I started. I originally started when I was working at a call center to occupi my time when there weren't many calls. today I no longer work there but still crochet most of my days away. I find there's a lot of stigma with me crocheting because I'm young but I love it so much. i have a lot of mental and physical health conditions that make me stay home most of my days but I find it gives me that calm that I need to be happy. crochet has helped save my life. it gives me an outlet I never had and its the most amazing feeling to make something out of nothing. I mostly crochet Pokemon but seeing them come to life give me a sense of pride I never felt. and instead of being a teenager spending money on drugs and alcohol which is a huge problem where I'm at and instead spend my money and time on yarn really does help me for my future. crochet saved me and I hope it does for others as well!

Just yesterday I was teaching my grandson and granddaughter to crochet. My granddaughter was successful at making a chain, but suddenly stopped and started crying. She’s autistic so we just let her have a meltdown…she’ll try again another day. My grandson gave up at the slip knot to start a chain…lol! But I think he too will come back to it.

I love crocheting, so much fun!
Total respect for you man, nothing wrong with making an epic scarf on the go, it's the same as people reading a book or listening to music on the train. Just an enjoyable pastime that you take with you on your travels. Maybe it has something to do with not as many people knitting or crocheting anymore,

Bless you for not letting people put a label on who should and should not crochet. Be you, young man and never let anyone define you. I’ve been crocheting for 46 years and I still crochet nearly every day. I believe it was a men who made the first knitting needles and the first crochet hook so who cares what anyone thinks. It’s very relaxing and my creativity flows. God bless you and keep up the good work.

I love this!! I crochet too. My grandma taught me years ago!!! I took an interest and she taught me. It's been many years, but I've honed in on my talent and have learned so much over the past 40 years. Thank you for posting this. I don't feel so alone anymore!! From one crochet bro to another, God Bless. P.S. it's therapeutic too!!

I’m an eighteen year old girl who’s been crocheting since I was fifteen I think it’s amazing that men or boys are taking on a creative hobby that i know I gets people staring in your direction. Men and women can knit or crochet or even sew all it takes is to puck the needle or hook and get started.

I love the question what should be creating that you are not ! Sadly some people are negative no matter who or what is involved - I have had some snide remarks while knitting on the subway and I`m an older woman - that said most of my conversations have been positive and I really don`t rats ass what anyone else thinks of the fact that I make productive use of being on the 6 train

I laid on my back on a hospital bed full of regrets. 2 surgeries, medical complications, some I will live with the rest of my life… I was only 66 yrs old, time to stop wasting time. I got back in the gym, lost that 40 kilos, active, I'm alive. Learned to cook (healthy), mixing MY music for my enjoyment, learned photoshop, illustrator, speaking better French & Spanish. Learning Nederlands. Seriously took up watercolour… sold my first paintings for €400 each. Forget those nay-sayers, there’s so much life to take part in, hanging out in pubs, half drunk wasn’t life. (None of my pub "friends" visited me in hospital, I have many new friends)
