  • The tale of a rather splendid Odeon that seemed destined to be demolished after being closed due to local authority intransigence. And then.....

    Thank you for posting this history of Scarborough Odeon. Although I left Scarborough in 1961 the Odeon has long remained in my memory as my favourite cinema. Although not a 'key' cinema the manager up to 1961, Mr Hugh James Horne could be seen in the theatre foyer in full evening dress (tails) most evenings. Presentation was excellent and outshone the other Scarborough cinemas. If you look at the original pictures of the Odeon Sutton Coldfield which was also designed by the same architects you will see a remarkable similarity to the exterior. I must however correct two statements - the CinemaScope screen was installed in the mid 50's not the 60's and the underpass at the top of Westborough did not cross over to the Odeon - it actually crossed over to the the Railway Station which was on the opposite side of the road to the Odeon - the first thing visitors to Scarborough by train saw as they exited the railway station was the Odeon - ideally located - the best site for a cinema in the town.

      Yes I did say Cinemascope was installed in the 50s. Thanks for the correction on the other point though. I strive to be factually correct.

    I always enjoy the videos on cinemas. I enjoyed them growing up in 1960's and many survived in Sheffield until 1980's

      Brilliant. The Gaumont was beautiful. Then first multi cinema was exciting cineplex 1,2,3 run by ex rank executive.

    Those photos at the end were quite haunting, nostalgic and sad. What an era it must have been in the 40's, 50's ad 60's although I was born in mid 60's so tagged onto the latter part of the 60's and early 70's so was witness to some of the picture palaces myself......sigh.....

      I was born 1951 so was a teenager in the 60s and it was, FAB, but the decline for many cinemas had already sadly begun.

    @0:48 Please could you share the name of this audio track? I have been so used to listening to the snippet in the usual 80's ident, that I didn't realise it was a complete track! Thanks, and best wishes from Bournemouth. :)
    ps- I think the outcome of this cinema, is to be applauded, despite the heartache. As you said, many of these cinemas are left to rot and be either demolished or turned into other Rank bingo/gambling spots. Really happy to see beautiful use of natural light in the upstairs cafe, and a modern venue for theatre and cinema. I hope it stays for decades to come!

      There are several videos on you tube covering the Odeon idents over the years. One of them names the track on the Odeon pink scan ident which was at one time available as a single I believe.

      @@cinemaslostforever Thank you so much! I have collected many 35mm idents and adverts over the past 12 years, including sets of Rank 'Big Screen Scene', Odeon 1987-89, Odeon Day set 3 (1990s) and various from early 2000s (sphere, pink sparkle, etc), so am no stranger! Thanks to your reply, I successfully found a mass of music from Jeff Newmann and bought a CD copy of Automotion 1 & 2 on Discogs, which contains 'Silver Screw'. It's an amazing record - so 80s, it's bonkers! Take care, and thanks for all the uploads. :)

      @@pawncrackers I used to use those 'Big Screen Scene' 'This Is Cinema' and the 'See you Soon' after watching them at the Odeon Ipswich. I asked National Screen if I could have a couple of sets and they said yes , if I somehow covered up the Rank Gong logo, which obviously I couldn't. I just thought they were brilliant. I used them at The Regal, Stowmarket Suffolk for years!

      @@cinemaslostforever That's really kind of them! :) It's a shame that the gong man has all but vanished - if you were to ask someone at random, most likely wouldn't know about it, or the powerhouses of Wardour Street (might be a good topic to cover, btw! Consider searching for London Filmland's blog). Sorry it took so long to reply, I hope all is well! :)

    Looking back, Odeon cinemas must have felt aggrieved when, in 1995, The council gave permission for all those alterations, that resulted in the demolition of the stage end, when their more sensitive 1988 plans were rejected. I also just wonder, if Scarborough council, after rejecting the Odeon plans, later regretted not giving the plans the go ahead. Why didn't Odeon appeal to the department of the environment, back in 1988, to try and overturn the councils decision?

    • @cinemaslostforever
      @cinemaslostforever  9 месяцев назад

      I have no info on whether they appealed or not, but yes I think the council, seeing it start to deteriorate, quickly gave permission for the theatre.
