I own 12 rental houses in West Michigan, Grand Haven. A very desirable area. For decades. My rents I've Only EVER raised based on increases I get from my increased insurance bills, water bill. I keep up on maintenance. Improvements too. Shame on any landlord that makes such unreasonable increases. I Still Make plenty of $$. This is vile Immoral GREED.

Well, in America they call being Evil & Greedy, “capitalism.” The supply & demand concept is pure bullshiit. Just because people want a product doesn’t mean you have to drain them for their money. What’s wrong with making a profit and at the same time giving the Poor Man a break. The Producer & Consumer need each other. And for you Sir, that’s good that you don’t price gouge, but sometimes you business owners need to just bite those expenses instead of passing it on to the Poor. Ain’t that part of business..??? Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. High risk, high reward.. but the burden seems to always fall back on the average working man.

    • @shilohgardner

‘Last shall be First’ you have a choice not to be a working man. The comments here are ridiculous. Price gouging is awful but not as bad as others who can’t figure out how to survive in the richest country in the world. Why would people give you anything if you can’t even extend the dignity you demand to them?

By the looks of the front yard of this property, this guy has been working the whole time, not paying rent, and all of a sudden finds issues with a apartment he has been living in for years but doesn't want to leave. The real question here is why are these single family homes owned by investors instead of by the people who live in them? Why are we allowing the investor class to keep stealing our homes out from under us with endlessly more creative market manipulation and predatory loan schemes?
Single family homes of the type shown here were never meant to be owned by absentee investors. Single family homes were always meant to be owned by those who live in them. Those who wish to invest in real estate rentals should be given the option to invest in commercial apartment complexes and commercial spaces such as stores, warehouses, offices, and manufacturing facilities. Ownership of single family residential real estate in the USA should be mandated for US citizens and legal green card holders only.

This was bound to happen since everybody from large cities woke up one morning and all decided to move to Florida. Greed then took over and here's the result. Everyday hard-working people are forced out, and landlords are whistling all the way to the bank. All the people from NYC that are bailing out due to crime and cost of living are in for a shock if they think prices aren't going to increase in Florida. It's common sense. People suddenly are abandoning large cities and racing to places like Florida and Texas, so as a result you can expect major increases in goods and services. I'm from NYC and now live in Texas, because my job moved here. I'm shocked to see what people are willing to pay for my house and even as much as $50k over the asking price. My property taxes doubled this last year. I've owned the house for years, and 41 years ago, property here was a steal. Now, because of all the people moving here everything has gone up. I paid $250 a month rent when I first moved here, brand new building , all the amenities, they even let you pick your carpet color and counter tops, all that for $250.00 a month, swimming pool, tennis courts, a large wraparound terrace. Now, rents are almost as high as NYC. That's just the way it goes.

The pandemic has created this as a nationwide problem. I've lived in the Bay Area where it's been a problem for years and completely insane. You can imagine in San Francisco on the surrounding areas agreed that has taken over over the last 10 years because of all the inward-bound movement etc. Because of a state law that allows landlords to evict tenants by saying they're going out of the rental business, thousands of people have been thrown out of their homes. This has led to the amount of homeless people drug addicts etc tents that you see on the news about San francisco. People manage to have a place to live and be safe because they could share apartments together. When they all started getting thrown out on the street everything in the city changed. California in general is this way. As it is it costs a lot to live here between sales tax state tax gas tax etc it's crazy. I myself am a landlord and I'm very reasonable in what I charge my tenants I don't charge them what I could get I charge them what is fair. Unfortunately capitalism along with LLC companies buying a real estate, coupled with foreign investors who buy things and leave them all empty has created the situation where no one cares about anyone and it's all about money. It's a sad sad State of affairs and our government does nothing ever, but we can give 10 billion dollars to Ukraine.

This is so very true. I live in the middle of San Francisco in a rent controlled studio apartment. I retired early 11 years ago ago. I contemplated moving to "cheaper Seattle, Arizona, Florida, Idaho or some other such place but that still small voice said "dont. Glad I listened.
All these places are now almost as expensive as California. My rent is easily affordable but I stay prudent and DO NOT own a car, do NOT carry cc debt, and eat out or take out sparingly and make coffee at home.
Thr pandemic lock down made me SEE so many folks were unprepared and this building emptied out by 75% and stayed that way almost two years. It also made me realize how much money we waste on crap and when SHTF you have no backup.
An example is how EDD failed so many who needed that money to survive.
Again you right. So many syndicates, foreign and domestic are gobbling up property and then squeezing the life out of folks who just can't keep up. My two sisters in south Georgia just saw their rent go from 515 a month to 915 after a syndicate bought up the properties on their block. One moved in with her co-worker boyfriend. The other with her ex-husband.
My well heeled sister in south Florida lives in a Sarasota mansion with her husband. Everytime I visit every 4-6 months the sprawl has gotten worse, the traffic crazy and the have/have not ratio glaring. I went to undergrad and grad school in Florida and remember when Florida was mostly a dump.
I'm senior now so as long as this place holds and rent control doesn't get voted down I doubt I'll being moving anywhere-except the funeral home.
Mexico is too dangerous now and the Caribbean too stormy and the rest of the world sees American retirees and they too jack up the prices.
One last thing. The drug and homeless problem in San Francisco is heartbreaking. Civic center, tenderloin, etc. Sadly, it'll probably get worse.

@@b4804514 It was created by a combination of factors and that includes high rents. But rents can only go as high as the market will bear. The bay area is/was such a desirable place that people flocked here in 60s and 70s. Demand eventually exceeded supply and the market corrected.
Then pandemic aids hit and changed everything along with 2 or 3 recessions followed up by the tech boom and bust and then the internet twitter, facebook came in paying "kids sky high salaries and the market corrected again to grab some of that money until 1 bedrooms in San francisco got up to 3500 or more. But there were many willing to pay it to live there.
Of course mental illness plays a BIG part as when I first came here I couldnt believe the CRAZY prople here. People who should have been in a managed care facility but weren't.
Then the drugs. The bay area and particularly San Francisco was party hearty for YEARS and the wine, coke, booze, weed and everything else flowed freely. It was (and is) a thriving industry and one could get ANYTHING they wanted. BUT many lost control and got strung out too deep and lost their jobs, housing, friends, families and in a lot of cases their minds. I saw many.
Yes one can live outside here but there are many homeless folks in L.A(downtown around 6th will shatter your soul)., New York, Buffalo, Philly, Atlanta, Washington d.c., Phoenix.

What’s the real reason behind the rent increase?

The cities in South Florida kept raising the property taxes during the pandemic, lumber and repair materials increased by up to 400% as did labor increased prices. Property insurance went from ridiculous to I sane, I mean a small 1200 sq. ft home insurance was 5000 now nearly 10,000 for hurricane coverage. Florida cities allowed tenants to not pay their rent for 18 months and no evictions allowed.! Landlords are trying to save their properties from foreclosure. At the same time a huge amount of people came into the market with cash in hand to pay. So goodbye old nonpaying tenants have fun finding a new place!

Demand. Every person who ever thought for a moment of moving to Florida has done it with the pandemic. Many have remote work & high income, they can live anywhere so they chose Florida. The rents went up because the replacement people are willing to pay the new rent. The trouble is, all the people who do physical work of any kind can no longer afford to live here. Restaurants are closed because they can't find any minimum wage workers anymore, they all left. The rent will continue to go higher until landlords can't fill units.

Key point is that he had not paid 18 grand and the landlord had to get money from a grant so yea If I was the landlord I'd be evicting him and replacing with someone more dependable, if I was this guy I think I would move to a state that has a lower cost of living he don't have to move far GA is right up the road and there are plenty places for less than 1800 bucks a month

When he does leave he’s gonna leave a mess so the owner is gonna have to pay a lot of money to get it up to par

$2,500 rent for a 2 bed 2 bath apartment in Broward🙃 I love Florida but the cost of living down here is awful.
