It's true, even with mods. Add a spear? They swing it around like they're at a baseball game. Even with how crazy I am (Mudcrab King, a Goat that can Tank against Dragons, shouting "JUST DO IT" at someone to send them flying at Mach 5 straight out of Whiterun) I am not too fond of having Tamriel's citizens using a spear in such a stupid way.
Like others said, the manner that you make a Daedric item is much, MUCH different than a normal weapon, for you need a daedric heart in order to forge them, in other words, a demon heart. What does that mean? ( This part is more or less copy paste from another comment ) That means that no matter how perfect you make the blade or armor, without any ridges or faulty parts, somewhere along the forging the item will start to get corrupted, making the red lines AKA veins appear alongside the spikes and other unorthodox things that a blacksmith wouldn't do, essentially, the Daedra spirit fused with the item, making it somewhat alive, and each Daedric item is slightly different because they represent the Deadra's personality, this means that both Oblivion's and Skyrim's Daedric weapons and armors are canonic. However, it's written in lore that, despite their "imperfections", when held, they work better than if they were made without the heart, perfect balance and cutting/crushing power.
Your greatsword design can actually become very Daedric if you just add a fuller (or fullers) on the blade, and make them black with red decoration. That would have both style and practicality
I think your desingns are very elegant and very well balanced between the fantasy and reality factor, just as a side note to get the real daedric effect all the weapoms should have a black scheme of colors and several red lines, almost like blood streams but overall I much rather prefer your weapons over the Skyrim ones
The ultimate weapon: Mehrune's razor Not only can it potentially kill anything it touches, but during the quest to reforge it you see that it's pommel can in fact, be removed.
I do believe the point of all the spikes and blades and points that threaten to cut the wielder are meant to make cutting themselves on the edge that much easier.
What I find impractical about the Daedra weapons is that they are just extremely thick. As you said, there are three layers, and they not only add mass but also make the weapon thicker which will effect the penetration depth.
producer - "we want these weapons to look WRONG they are made for/by daedric/demons who are evil/weird"; artist - creates all daedric weapons that make skallagrim cringe; producer - "mission accomplished!"
I think it's funny that the spike on the back of the short daedric sword could have been designed to prevent the sword from being stabbed deep enough to get stuck from the serrations, but wasn't.
Interestingly enough, the daedra heart used in forging these weapons makes them appear super chaotic and wicked but according to the lore they're supposed to defy logic as we know it. So even though these weapons look weird they should handle normally.
Aside from giving the guard and pommel of the new Daedric "greatsword" a more Daedric look, I would've suggested perhaps a variant of leaf-blade design, so as to more closely resemble the original.
The design of Daedric weapons in Skyrim actually fits into the Lore of the world. Daedra are incapable of creating things, they can only crudely copy what mortals have created, and when they do, their brutality and chaotic nature is what shapes it. Daedric weapons perfectly encapsulate that. They're crude, chaotic copies of swords, and the impracticality would only really be useful to a demon who's strength is so great they could cut through you with a dinner plate.
Someone once got me a foam version of a daedric sword, and 50% of the time I stabbed myself by accident with the pommel and guard. The only way I found to use it effectively was to hold it like a dagger.
The 1-handed sword was a fantastic adaption that definitely kept the original style. In my opinion, I feel like it would have been perfectly acceptable to even ditch the spike on the dull edge of the blade but nice to see you keeping it close to original design. The 2-handed sword was certainly the least "Daedric" looking one and I feel like, as you stated, the guard could be tweaked a little to add more flavour. The blade shape too was a little too generic I feel but then again, that also means it would be hilariously more practical. The 1-handed axe was definitely the most interesting for me and one this I noticed was that you could have easily turned the blade up side-down from how you had it and it would function just as effectively but would also buave more potential to hook like a bearded axe. Finally, the 2-handed axe just looks straight up awesome. Not only does it stuck to the theme almost as well as the 1-handed sword but it is also crazy practical and you even accou get for thrusting with the top spike. Overall, great adaptions and would love to see more videos like this.
I personally like much more the designs made by Skall I always thought daedric weapons were too bulky but after this video (and the last one about fantasy sword) i see why
Loved the axe designs you made. They look practical and threatening. I can safely say if bethesda had used those basic shapes and proportions and then added their fancy daedric textures i would have liked them more than how they actually are in the game.
one thing your forgetting is the fighting style. the changes you made are more for someone that wants to kill their target quickly and effectively, but I think a dremora from skyrim would rather toy with the mortals. using the serrations to help throw them to the ground, and cause small wounds to slowly kill their target.
in additon dremora don't really die. they just come back. a lost fight isn't the end. they just enjoy the carnage. they have to wait for a next fight anyway.
But they're still supposed to be the most effective weapons of the game, which doesn't make much sense with design flaws as striking as these. Why would the player character, when forging his own daedric weapon, adapt such hindering designs? I think it doesn't make much sense and actually like the redesign concepts.
considering the lore. it's entirely possible the blacksmith doesn't get much choice in design either. Lorewise you use their heart in a ritual to bind them to the Ebony and create a weapon. you basically turned an actual daedra into a sword. he may force the thing to look how he wants it. even if that didn't determine shape, a daedric weapon is not like a steel sword. it's forged through magic to begin with. (check lore for it there is a book that describes the creation of these). A weapon of magic could be shaped like a club and still cut things because it's no longer something bound by regular physics. Daedric stuff just isn't straightforward.
The only problem I have with the one handed axe is the fact the actual axe part was essentially cut in half. If I was designing it I would have made the sharp axe head bigger.
There are lore books you can read in Skyrim that talk about the Daedric weapon forging process a bit, apparently no matter what kind of weapon you forge and in whatever shape the weapon will always become a twisted and/or corrupted version (because of the Daedric flesh and blood used in the forging process) no matter how sleek and perfect you originally forged it (in fact they are all forged as plain versions of said weapon albeit with a demonic alloy) but it will always be a superb weapon, like, you might think the pointy serrations on the blade of a Daedric sword make it a horrible cutter or the pommel would constantly stab your hand when you use it but even so it will cut like a hot knife through butter and the pommel shape will be nothing but an asset. i understand the nature of the video and it is entertaining, the nature and lore of Daedric weapons makes it irrelevant, nobody designs Daedric weapons to be a twisted spiky mess they become that on their own.
I think the greatsword might have made more sense as a big messer/falchion single-edged thing. An oversized clip point could have kept the silhouette somewhat similar while still keeping it a reasonably practical weapon.
Two handed axes and warhammers have, by default, different animations/grips than two handed swords in Skyrim. You have the "2handclose" and "2handwide" animation sets. They all look hilarious but they are different. Just wanted to point that out. Also, I REALLY like the 2hand sword an 2hand axe redesigns. That's the kind of fantasy stuff I like.
If you maintained the sort of wavy shape of the greatsword and serrated the blade, I think it would look fairly accurate and still be functional. Possibly even maintain the tip, but connect the points so it would sort of have an off centre curved tip. If anything that would just maximize the amount of damage cutting near the tip of the blade would do, plus it would look cool. Thrusts would be less effective, but still do damage. Alex Steele must now forge it.
Leaving out the warhammers, of course the fact that big heavy clubs are the only weapons of any actual practicality in skyrim because it's hard to mess up a hammer.
The serrations should’ve been kept because it’s meant to inflict as much pain as possible and rip flesh. Not necessarily as good for killing quickly but they’re demonic creatures. They’re gonna kill you regardless. They probably take pleasure in the intimidation factor too so their armor seems less ridiculous considering this.
I agree with the blade changes on the Daedric (longsword) Greatsword except I personally think you should have just take the centre as wide as the gap out and basically keep the shape and remove only the gap, plus make it even closer to the game weapon by adding serrations all along the blade. Just my personal ideas to improve the accuracy to the original
Skall, your puns are legendary. Have no shame for what you have that others envy. I think the daedric aesthetic is very important. I always imagined the daedric weapons being forged in oblivion. With the ash and fire there is a lot of slag left on the metal. Jagged and brutal because they were made in the dull light. I think that aesthetic is very important. You need to have a bit more metal on those weapons to reinforce them. They have to have a bit extra material.
I miss mixed materials. Think of a place where metal is scarce. I would think of the edges as pieces of obsidian or carbide and the backbones of bone type materials with polymer, which holds all together.
I would say that the daedric weapons are made more for pain than lethality. To inflict pain in humans more than to kill them? Hence all the crazy serrations and weight added to the blade. That seems very characteristic of the dremora to me.
For the daedric twohanded axe, if you tried to thrust with the horn of it the pommel spike would be facing you and could harm you. it looks more dangerous to the user than the vanilla skyrim one
They all stay somewhat true to the Daedric style. These designs are more reminiscent to how Bethesda would have designed their weapons in older Elder Scrolls titles except for exaggerated Handle lengths, a little too much materials and layers, etc.
Hey Skallagrim, I love your videos and especially the ones on realistic weapons in Skyrim. That being said, what's your opinion on the weapons in the elder scrolls 3 Morrowind?
I could make a case for the top spike on that first sword, because it would function as a stop and sinking THAT much blade into an opponent would almost surely be lethal the stop, prevents the blade from sinking up to the serrations and allows you to withdraw your blade without it getting stuck in an opponent. However I do like your design more honestly and the top spike still acts as a stop which is also good. The second sword doesn't look anything like the original and actually looks like some weapons from Antiquity but why not follow through with the original pommel and cross guard and turn the hand guard into a full hand guard more like a basket or half basket or something? You could even keep the aesthetics from the original just extend the cross guard down to the pommel and conjoin them into a single unit? I really like what you did with the ax. The only thing I'd say is that the reinforcements should be black not silver but honestly that looks awesome. Also I'd add that the second Ax looks really good. Over all I like your redesigns and I'm glad that I'm getting your videos again in my feed. RUclips has been really frustrating with the inconsistent feed of videos and also sending me lots of new stuff that I'm not really interested in instead of the stuff I'm subscribed to. Anyway, good to see the video and great video.
Your designs are definitely much better than what the Daedra came up with, however you missed the Dagger, Shield, and Bow. On the bright side, maybe you have time to show us those as well, alongside showing us what you would do for the Dragonbone set?
You had a video about magic in weapons. Would it work to imagine up some properties of Daedric metals that would make their shapes make more sense? If I recall, the game uses ebony ingots combined with Daedra hearts, possibly explaining how the material "grows" in those strange shapes, making it somewhat alive, though that explains the shape, it doesn't justify it's design. Perhaps properties of friction, flexibility, mass, or other attributes could be altered to justify the original forms. They are otherworldly weapons, perhaps their form could be justified through otherworldly properties.
While the weapons could do with a little more daedric styling, maybe some some runic etchings and some color adjustments they are vastly better in the functionality department and a good choice if you want to make a more functional weapon.
i think that's the idea of the weapon hook itself on a target to rip it apart clothing and bones alike. the second sword you could have kept the pommel if i can stab then i'll just bash my opponent with it. the axe you should have kept as a two-handed weapon and kept the pommel to let be practical and make the head better.
the spiked edges of the daedric weapons in skyrim are definitely useless, but the logic behind it is that although it does less damage it causes more paint to the victim. For example imagine thrusting and stabbing someone with those daedric swords, not only would the spikes cut your flesh on the inside but when the sword is pulled out it will most likely pull out a lot of your flesh causing more pain than a clean cut and this reflects pretty well with daedra because there sole desire is to make mortals suffer
I kind of feel like maybe the blades should be heavily scalloped to try to balance the really jagged original design with something that's at least somewhat usable.
When he forgets that these weapons are meant for basically demons many times stronger than humans, making the jagged bits and double points very usable against squishy humans
I think the point of Daedric weapons is that they’re ebony swords that have been “corrupted” by a daedra’s soul. In other words, if you could shape a weapon out of the exact same material, it would be better...but you can’t. In my mind, that’s why dragonbone weapons are better. They probably have the same sharpness/quality as a daedric weapon (maybe even worse), but they’re shaped and designed in an intelligent fashion.
Skyrim has now a new mod. Believable Weapons it is called. This guy made every weapon in the game realistic and more accurate to real life weapons. Every melee weapon you can find is overhauled. I think you will really like it, if you want to play Skyrim again. Here is the link: www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/37737
ye olde weapons may have had all strait edges but serrated edges are more effective at cutting even fabric in my expirence. though I agree the ones on the swords are a bit too jagged. the ones on the axes aren't that ineffective given that the majority of enemies of demora wear plate armor and all those jagged edges could be useful in tearing it appart. it should also be noted we have saw blades in this day and age with similar angles that cut just fine. the axes being slower but heavier then a circular saw blade makes them alot less likely to get stuck.
in the lore deadric weapons are made when crafting an ebony weapon and tempering it in deadra blood, and the thing about ebony is that it cant be worked cold but cools down in seconds, so it makes sense that ebony/deadric weapons look poorly made because they ARE poorly made
daedric weapons are made of ebony. supposedly they're better because their craftsmanship is superior (LOL) & because Daedras put their hearts on them, dead Daedra hearts so it's also a bit "magical", cuz it's infused with a superior demon organ.
ebony is the literal hardend blood of a god. that aside it's not easy to work with so to get any kind of shape would require skill that most lack. that aside the actual shapes are horrendous.

I bet you didn't know the design for jagged blade came from Dremoras preference to use jagged butter knives for cutting groceries.

The 1-handed sword looks a lot like something used by Dark Eldar or maybe a Craftworld or Corsair who likes darker colours, as do the axes
When you forget its about realistic practicism and demons doesnt actually exist
I actually like your design of the "Daedric" longsword
Actually, the battleaxe/war hammer animations are separate from the longsword animations, which makes their swordiness a much more upsetting issue.
I would have made the weapons of a dark grey with red veins color, so it looks more daedric without sacrificing usefulness
They are damn cool weapons.
'make every sword plain'
I couldn't see a Deadric flamberge except a dagger, but that might be cool.
Skyrim has now a new mod. Believable Weapons it is called.
This guy made every weapon in the game realistic and more accurate to real life weapons. Every melee weapon you can find is overhauled.
I think you will really like it, if you want to play Skyrim again.

WE need a mod based on these new designs, no really. some mod dev in the comments, please do this
honestly, they look pretty nice, they do still look like demon weapons i would say
I’d still like to see a video on the halo energy sword.
Could you do this for Daedric armor? I was never a fan of it (except for the shape of the helm).
Clearly the spikes in the pommel of the swords were for when you remove it to end him rightly.
I really like this type video
The ax looked like it would be something from oblivion
ye olde weapons may have had all strait edges but serrated edges are more effective at cutting even fabric in my expirence. though I agree the ones on the swords are a bit too jagged. the ones on the axes aren't that ineffective given that the majority of enemies of demora wear plate armor and all those jagged edges could be useful in tearing it appart. it should also be noted we have saw blades in this day and age with similar angles that cut just fine. the axes being slower but heavier then a circular saw blade makes them alot less likely to get stuck.
in the lore deadric weapons are made when crafting an ebony weapon and tempering it in deadra blood, and the thing about ebony is that it cant be worked cold but cools down in seconds, so it makes sense that ebony/deadric weapons look poorly made because they ARE poorly made
You should look at the daedric weapons in Morrowind. The majority of them are less over the top than the ones in Skyrim. I think they look cooler too.
I understand the Fighters Guild is looking for new members. Seems a bit odd, but that's what I hear.
daedric weapons are made of ebony. supposedly they're better because their craftsmanship is superior (LOL) & because Daedras put their hearts on them, dead Daedra hearts so it's also a bit "magical", cuz it's infused with a superior demon organ.
ebony is the literal hardend blood of a god. that aside it's not easy to work with so to get any kind of shape would require skill that most lack. that aside the actual shapes are horrendous.
