  • England go into a tough-looking final qualifier for the 1988 European Championships needing a point away to Yugoslavia in November 1987 to reach the finals. In wet conditions in Belgrade, England produce an incredible performance to lead 4-0 after 25 minutes thanks to goals from Peter Beardsley, John Barnes, Bryan Robson and Tony Adams. The game is long over before Katanec pulls one back near the end - the only goal England concede in qualifying for either Euro 88 or Italia 90.

    Never thought Brian "and it's in there" Moore had much idea. The fact he didn't know what was going on with the backpass sums it up. He then guesses it's Lineker when it's Robson and seems unable to identify Tony Adams. And you wonder why folks preferred the BBC's coverage.

      I think in his favour though is the fact that a commentator can get away with some mishaps and inaccurate statements if engaging to listen to (Murray Walker as the best example) and in that respect he had a good voice for commentary and he also had a good mix of talking calmly until the point he actually got excited and then sounding genuine when he did. I did notice Brian Clough needed to explain the reason for the indirect free-kick in the area, but I did wonder what that was for myself at first (since the backpass rule came in it's not been relevant though I suppose, but I do remember vaguely now that rule about the ball needing to leave the area before the goalie could pick it up after he rolls it to a team-mate - I can't even be sure he'd be allowed to kick it but Clough didn't suggest he wouldn't and it would seem a bit farcical if he just had to leave it alone or give away the free-kick!).

      @ I was there. They looked completely knackered.

    •  4 года назад

      @@tsmay4598 I envy your attendance, maybe they were amongst the most talented but fitness and conditioning wasn't up to snuff it seems... Something we always complain about when we seem to lack a yard of pace at finals. I was young then, and was so gutted about how poor we were, especially as I think that goal against Yugoslavia, was the only one conceded in qualifying...
      Further I thought Shilton (36) was a weak link at 1986, and was awful in '88 and couldn't jump aged 40 at Italia' 90. Bobby Robson didn't have the balls to drop him and the papers kept hailing him as the 'best in the world, he wasn't'. Maybe 10 years earlier he was.

      BTW I prefer Butland to Pickford so... Personal choice

    • @tsmay4598
      @tsmay4598 4 года назад +1

      @ In those days, teams picked their best eleven for all league, FA Cup and League Cup Matches, so there was no resting of players. And there was (and still is) no winter break and the condition of pitches was appalling (matches were played on mud, not grass) by Spring which put an extry strain on the players.
      No need to envy me though, as the two matches I attended (versus Netherlands and Russia) were really disappointing. The match against the Netherlands was actually a really good match and could have gone either way, but they were awful against Russia. And it was heart-breaking to hear the amount of abuse Barnes had to put up with.

    •  4 года назад

      @@tsmay4598 spot on with the analysis of the lack of rotation, pitches etc. Good reminder. I wonder what it was like on the continent.
      The racial abuse, yep that's another nauseating story... Could go on all day about that. I was on the terraces at OT c. 1992, Danny Wallace was playing for United then but his best years at the Saints were far behind him. A guy a couple of rows back called him that word, one of our fans! Noone said shit, not for, not against. No stewards came, none were called for. I was around 15, I couldn't say something, it's not worth it a kid speaking up but that ugliness gets everywhere.
      I don't get people saying it's still bad after what's been said to Sterling, Fred etc recently. Its awful but it's nowhere near the 70s and 80s, and there are always going to be scumbags. Ban them, arrest them and fine them heavily. Its the only way. It's remarked on now with such disgust because it still exists, and that should be how it's treated but it was the norm back in the day and nowhere near enough was said and done by those in positions of authority.
