Montana State student here. Michigan is undoubtedly the "better" school, but the white powder your son would get addicted to in Montana is much healthier. I have friends from Michigan who can attest to that. Moreover, MSU is an almost unbeatable deal for those willing to obtain residency, and the proximity to world-class recreation and uber-wealthy resorts like the Yellowstone Club/Big Sky makes for a surprisingly robust networking environment. It is an R1-class research institution located in the Headwaters Tech Hub, which is focused on photonics and smart sensing. It is also the University of the Yellowstone, and a global leader in both macro and microbiology. Acceptance rates are high but declining, and the trend lines all point up for Montana State and the Gallatin Valley at large. Neither school is a bad bet. If U of Michigan is in-state or money is no object, then the choice is obvious. Otherwise, I think it's a tossup.
I’ll second this notion. I trained at in pediatrics at Harvard for one year and transferred to University of Utah for the second two years. Much better balance and ended up with better training as a result.
If he is majoring in math and computer science, I really dont think it’s gonna make much of a difference if he is a decent student. In fact, if he is surrounded by super smart students in Michigan, he might end up, dropping out because of a lack of confidencewhereas he might graduate in Montana and end up with many more opportunities. I would agree with you if you were majoring in something like liberal arts or business.
Alternative . . . start at Montana, if doing great, then xfer to the "more prestigious" college. BIL went to community college 2 or 3 years then graduated from a Big Ten - his career flew. Employers don't care where the applicant started, just about the diploma.
