- How to connect D5100 DSLR camera to 10 inch dobsonian telescope (Orion XT10g) for astrophotography. This works!:
(Sorry for the fact that this video is slightly out of focus - the irony in that has not passed me by! LOL. Some day if I have the time I will record again with a better focus!)
I finally found out how to get my DSLR to focus properly on my 10 inch dobsonian telescope.
Parts needed for a 1.25 setup:
1) DSLR
2) T- ring
3) T- adapter (nose-piece only!)
4) 1.25 inch barlow
5) 1.25 inch adapter (used to attach to 2 inch focuser)
6) telescope

Thank you! I did videos too and in the beginning of my moon and Saturn videos I showed this set up as well. It took me forever to figure it out as well! That extension tube is only for projection method! So if you stuck an eyepiece into that extension tube you could still attach the barlow lens at the end or remove it all together and the extension tube now allows for the camera to reach its focal point.
I have tried every lens, adapter combination i could think of, i managed to get an image but focus was slightly off. Not tried this combo with the barlow. Excited it give it a try. Thank you so much.

Thank you for this video because I kept hearing people say no, the prime set up is your camera + the T-ring + the T-adapter(Nose thing) and then telescope! I was like no that won't work because of the focal plane of the telescope and the camera sensor will not work.
So I said to myself after about 2 days of trying, maybe I will use the barlow lens in between like you did and I had gotten it to work. It took me 2 days to figure it out too! Lool . Thanks for making a video though for others who do not know!
Interesting thing one of my friends does not use the barlow and they got it to focus but they also said something about connecting the camera directly to the 2 to 1.25 inch adapter that comes with the scope. My threads are like yours so that would not work. Apparently Orion makes a 2 to 1.25 inch adapter with threads on the outside of that focus ring to attach the T-ring too so your camera would act as the eyepiece itself reaching the focal plane.
That extension tube can work only if you are using eyepieces and from the focal plane of the eyepiece to the cameras sensor can be achieved. This is if you want to get better astro images of planets and things.

Quick question, with that setup, the only way to magnify the image is in post processing or using digital zoom am I right? I think I now understand what CCD are used for...

Hi. I have the same issue but a different solution. The problem with using a Barlow is that you will narrow your field of view. It is better to instead move the mirror up by about 30mm. You can do this by using a mixture of spacers, standoffs and/or bolts.

The extension is for eyepiece projection photography where you put an eyepiece inside the extension.
and how does that work, I can't figure it out, still cannot focus
Only just found your video, not sure if you figured it out yet but the T-adaptor can be used to hold a 1.25 lens. This means you can get focus with the full set up and also good magnification. The "nose piece is only used if you are using the telescope as a prime lens.
I've tried that though with a 9mm eyepiece and got no focus.

Hey, thanks for the validation of what I've been doing. For my 6", I actually hacked it and moved the diagonal closer to the main primary to enable use of seconds (eyepiece) optics, however, not going to do this my identical 10" as yours One question, though, what strategy have you use to achieve sharp focus? I've a pentax K-1, and the focuser is too jumpy to get a sharp focus.

Get yourself the Atlas Eq mount from orion telescopes along with a 13 inch dovetail along with corresponding tube rings for better pics
Good morning young man I thoroughly enjoy your videos but I have one question for you I noticed in the blue straps on your telescope I’d like to know where you got those from that makes it look easy
You can also fit a possel eyepiece inside t2 tube
I have the same telescope. The downside to this setup is losing the eyepiece which can add a LOT of magnification to pull in more distant objecs. Also very difficult to track objects with this thing without a decent mount. It's ok for looking at the moon.

When you find out you can use the body of the variable adapter to put a eyepiece in you will be amazed at what all you can shoot! Keep in mind however if your going to use a barlow with it, you can run your setup above the highest useful magnification very fast. But it all will go together and work very well, you simply are projecting the light at focal length out of the tube and capturing it there. Enjoy!

need help again got a new telescope but i can not get my eyepiece projection kit to work (at all) there is nothing showing up on screen ive can get it to work with a extension tube just using the camera (no eyepieces). but with any eyepiece or barlow lens nothing works? ive got a eq5 goto with a Celestron Sky-Watcher Pro 80ED-APO Refractor Telescope mount and i was using Polaris as a test
i could be wrong but im sure you can simply drop the barlow inside the extension tube to gain the same effect?

I heard that the Skywatcher Skyliner 150p and 200p have a 2" to 1,25" adapter, that doubles up as an adapter for the T - ring. Does that bring the camera close enough, so that it can focus?

How is your xt10g tracking? is it good enough to take 10 second exposure shots? does the alignment work well with the synscan system?
I want to mount the new D800a camera which is full frame. Do you foresee any issues with the image circle? (you are using DX). Also, I'm assuming there's no optical magnification in that mount stack (no afocal going on) so it's basically a 1200mm "lens" (or close). My father owns the XT10 so i'm trying to do research before I dive in to borrow his telescope. Thanks!

I have an XT10 and a Nikon D750. The barlows seems to introduce a ton of edge softness. Any way to achieve prime focus without barlows?
If you get certain barlow lenses you can screw it directly into the t-ring
Does the barlow not give the camera 2x zoom? Does a barlow only multiply the viewing when you use an eyepiece?

Tell me about those sweet straps you have around the scope. Did you just rig up some straps with plastic tubing for the handle or did you find straps designed for telescopes?

Have you tried taking some HD video using the same camera and using registax software to see if clearer/brighter images can be obtained ? Im unsure if this is possible with a dobsonian (non-eq tracking) base, but registax may cope with the moving object and align all the video frames.

Hi. Pictures are possible. It's not a setup really designed for photography but I can get decent (not great) images with up to about 30 second exposures. There are tricks, like using hundreds of 1 second stacked images that can give you clear images as well. I have gotten very nice images of Jupiter and Saturn without any problem (they only require short exposures).

Hi. Yes. As he said, you have to have the barlow to achieve focus - that is the only way to get the focus onto the camera sensor.
But you have all the parts to be able to use your eyepieces buddy. It's what happened to me. I just put the barlow and works great. I only have the tools for prime focus. Need to get the T amount adapter to be able to use my eyepieces.

in Manuel mode, can you still use the zoom features on your camera?
+Ernest P. Worrell You can use digital zoom in Live View for example, but since you don't have any " zoom lens" mounted on your camera, you cannot zoom as with a point and shoot.

Mark Hazlitt Hi Mark. You can indeed put an eye-piece in the adapter, HOWEVER when I did that, I had no ability to get anything into focus. I have seen other videos where putting an eye-piece in the adapter worked, but it was never with something as large as a 10 inch scope - they were always smaller scopes.
I had to cut off about 1 inch of the part of the adapter that contained the eyepiece. This was done using 9mm eyepiece. Now the camera can get closer to focus using that eyepiece. Now the 25mm eyepiece will not work, but that's okay using this adapter. I wanted the closer view to photograph, I would have to get another adapter ( or make my own, knowing how they operate ) to use the 25 mmc EP
So pretty sure i'll sound dumb now, but how do you get zoom when there is no lens or ocular? Is it just the raw resolution? Sorry for dumb question.

Hello I have got an orion xt10g and nikon d5200 and so the exact same problem. I have some questions about your solution :). Does is matter which barlow is used to move the focalpoint backwards and if yes, which barlow do you have? Do you still get some decent deepsky photos using the barlow (longer focal lenght, less quality)? Hi. My barlow is made by GSO - not a very expensive one. I think any barlow should work as long as you have the right adapter to connect to it (1.25 vs 2 inch). I have been able to photograph the orion nebula, dumbell nebula and ring nebula with it (among other deep space objects). I don't think the adapter you linked to will work without a barlow - even just using the nose-piece of my setup will not work - in essence, without the barlow, you would have to somehow get the camera *inside* the telescope tube to get it to focus.
wouldnt you want a coma corrector in there? don't know how fast the scope is

I cannot be certain but I would think that it should also work with smaller scopes since the focus would already be closer to the secondary mirror (which was the problem with the 10 inch - I could not get the camera close enough to the secondary mirror for the camera to get focused - but the barlow helped solve that problem.

my cam (Nikon d3100) does not take pics even in manual mode! maybe my camera is old model?
Have the same problem here and it is very frustrating! Testing out on a 500 mm F8 before hauling out the telescope. A blank picture is taken at any exposure length. We are suffering from this ....photo.stackexchange.com/questions/57757/my-nikon-d3100-says-no-lens-attached-when-i-use-a-t-mount-with-itor we are the few that somehow the "trick" to get it to work escapes us :(
Kind of feel stupid but I did not appreciate how fast F8 is still. Dialed down the ISO to 100 and took photos!

Astronomy Geek Hi. I really don't recall exactly. I think the T-ring was about $10, the adapter was about $50, and my barlow is a 2x cheapie - also around $50 (perhaps less).
How to you get enough magnification to take pictures of jupiter?
With this set-up I get a magnification that is somewhere between my 25 mm and 12.5 mm eye-piece, so definitely close enough to take pictures.
where's the eyepiece? or are you just using the barlow as an eyepiece. ... I'm confused
+Ron Hill You don't use an eyepiece. The combination of the barlow and the camera allow you to create an "eyepiece."
Tyler Brady I went on and purchased this complete set up. I don't use the barlow, I just drop my eyepiece in the universal camera adapter. it works great either way.

Same here....with a 2x Barlow lens or a eyepeice projection tube, I cannot get a focused image.
I'm with you guys. Just went through every possible recipe and couldn't get a sharp image. Tried a 2x barlow, 5x barlow and was able to get Mars moving through the frame but nothing discernable.
Must we put in an eyepiece.. i didnt see you do that?
ashmanly Hi. There is no eye-piece used at all. Everything you use is in the video. I don't recall why it does not work with an eye-piece - I think there is not way to attach the adapter to an eye-piece. If you want to use an eye-piece there are other mounts where you use your camera as you normally would and point your camera lens up to the telescopy eye-piece - it is much harder to do it that way, but you do get a little more flexibility in your zoom factor.
+ashmanly this guy made a big mistake, your MEANT to put an eyepiece INSIDE the Projection Camera Adapter ( the bit he took off and threw away ) then your magnification will go up as far as the eyepiece you choose

I won't pretend I am any good at taking the photos, but I am pretty happy with the results considering I don't have the equatorial mount required for good quality astrophotography.

Those are great, Splendid color on the nebula.
The thing I hate the most is that it magnifies the object. Like the moon for example. It zooms in so close.
Right. I guess it depends on your telescope - I feel like it is not close enough for the planets and too close for the moon. Seems about right for nebulae and star clusters though. For the moon & planets I have been trying afocal photography with a mount (seems a bit better with my setup)
