  • This video confirms that I should not quit my day job! I make a few mistakes in this video but still manage to remove the front subframe and the oil pan gasket. Stay tuned for part two where I will replace the oil pan gasket and bolt everything back up.

I’ve got to say that’s an incredibly clean bottom end and oil pan for the car’s age. I did mine and the pan was very dark. Affirmation you bought a well maintained car!
A few tips for re-installation; (I didn’t drop the subframe)
I put the pan in place, resting a few inches from the block then laid the gasket on. It was tight getting it under the oil pump but the cork seems fragile and I feel it would’ve been damaged when installing the oil pan if it was zip-tied to the mating surface.
I removed the harmonic balancer - made it easier to keep the pan horizontal over the subframe. Since your subframe is out might not be a problem.
Great to see someone taking so much pride in their work - and car!
P.S. Loose socket might be because the bolt is chamfered and so is the bottom of the socket. Therefore the contact surface is smaller than it seemed? Just a thought. Waiting for part 2!

Hi J. Collett, indeed the car is clean! It's amazing what regular oil changes will do to a car.
I plan to use zip ties to hold the gasket, but I will evaluate once I place the pan near the engine. If there are too many obstacles that could potentially damage the gasket, I will cut the zip ties and do like you did.
Good idea about the socket, I didn't think about that. When I'm back in the garage I'll take a look at that 17mm nut. It's the nut that holds the bolt for the idler arm. Thanks for the tips!

Great video. Very useful to watch. I could do with changing the sump gasket on my e32. I think from what I've learnt watching you is I will put a little more penetration fluid on the subframe bolts. Although reading th other comments I may not have to drop the subframe. I think I need to investigate more.

Glad you found my video useful! I agree it's always good seeing a job on video before tackling it.
I used a lot of penetrating oil in the subframe bolts (from above) and surprisingly the oil only reached one bolt. The other 5 were dry and rusty. I'm not sure why that is.
You don't need to drop the subframe to change the oil pan gasket. You can lift the engine so that the pan clears the subframe. I figure it would need lifting quite a bit, so it's probably best to disconnect the throttle and cruise control cables, as well as removing the two bolts that hold the transmission mounts to the bracket. It might be good to remove the radiator fan too so it doesn't interfere with the shroud.

Hello and congrats for your videos! I am considering to replace the oil pan gasket on my e34 535i by myself, so pretty similar to the e32 I guess. Is it possible to remove the oil pan without removing the front subframe? I can't see it very well from the video

You did a professional works ,your car is so clean and in perfect condition,i had fully restored my car and like to ask you about changing the mechanical fan of the engine into electric one , do you recommend that?

Hello hazim hani, thank you for your encouraging words! Yes I heard about people replacing the fan clutch with an electric fan. There are also people who delete the clutch fan entirely, and only use the auxiliary fan. I can't comment if it's a good idea or not, because this is like re-engineering the car and I don't have the knowledge to do that. It needs careful attention to thermals so that the cooling system can work efficiently in all conditions. I know that on my car, I will leave the original cooling system alone, it works good enough as it is.

Super boulot!

So why was the car smoking in the first place?

The oil light turns on per hour when the car heats up ...why

    • @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec
      @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec  2 года назад +1

The first suspect is the check valve at the bottom of the oil filter canister. The check valve is known to break, which makes the oil pressure drop. Make a Google search about this, it is well known. The second suspect would be the oil pressure switch, at the back of the engine head. I don't think they go bad often, but it's not impossible. It's a cheap part to replace but you need a deep socket to install the switch.
