Amid serious infight in the BJP in Uttar Pradesh and rumours that Yogi Adityanath may be replaced, the Chief Minister of UP has doubled down on Hindutva which did not yield significant success in the Lok Sabha Elections. In an order across the state, he has asked that shopowners and street vendors place their name on their establishments/carts for the length of the Kanwar Yatra. Many believe these names would ensure that Muslim vendors are harassed, singled out or economically boycotted. Supporters of the scheme argue that if Muslims are entitled to Halal, Kanwar Yatra pilgrims are also entitled to follow their own restrictions.

Yogi is not weak at all. he can see what is happening in the west, he does want it to take place in India. This is what I can understand. That is why he is taking such bold stands.

While the objective of shifting the conversation from Yogi Adityanath's future role in the BJP has been achieved, the BJP will now have to tread cautiously on contentious issues. The allies at the centre have their own interests that may not align with such directives, and rumblings have already been heard. The UP government must explain how this order benefits the administration. Intentions must be clearly communicated to avoid communal tension and distress. The post-2024 election scenario is vastly different and requires a measured approach. Very overt Hindutva politics may not be well-received by key allies at the centre.
Brand guru Dilip Cherian is an "expert" on every domain under the sky.
Halal is politics. Anyone who doesn't see that or can't see that is dangerous for the larger society.
