The watch does not "seal itself" the water lock is just to deactivate the touch screen while swimming, and purge water out of the speakers. The watch is waterproof with or without this enabled.
that right but turning that feature on disables the touch response on the screen as well so you don't accidental touch on your watch and turn off tracking for instance. the feature is turned on automatically when you go swimming and start tracking your laps.
Zach Rich if it’s water proof with our without it. If you have one. Lets throw it in the pool and see if it survives.
FazeTug I literally swim with mine almost daily both pool and salt water and never turn it on. Never had any issue.

For anyone wondering about active movement i take my series 3 with me in the lake it was scary the first time because.. well i dont see many people testing these out. But its perfectly fine i just have it on the “color” face and as soon as i leave or get on the jet ski/ or boat i just put it into water lock mode and spin the crown and any water comes right out (: the watch is perfect! Especially for the price. Ik a lot of people see it as damn its $400. But honestly the features are incredibly helpful and picking up a call from my watch instead of running around for my phone... the features are subtle but you definitely will learn to appreciate the small but helpful features this watch has. Especially with the activity app!

I accidentally went into the pool and ocean with my Apple Watch series 2 years ago. I thought the water drop was for after you submerge it, to remove any water already inside. This is good to know. I’m planing on using it to track swimming in the summer. I have a series 3 now. I’m just more worried of hitting a wall than the actual water resistance.

the 'water' button is used AFTER swimming, just so you can push water out from the speaker. thats it.
the watch itself is always sealed against water.
the watch turns it on automatically when you start tracking a swim, and you cannot interact with the watch while swimming till you turn that mode off, it provides protection from false touch and helps get the water out. maybe the wording should have been better on my side. thank you for your inputs

I’ll teach you how to swim sir!! It’s easy once you get it down! It’s a lot of fun and relaxing. Nothing better than getting a good swim!! Apple Really missed the mark on the waterproofing I mean wtf? Why do I have to shut that watch down to go in the water? If they make the next gen fully waterproof then I know now after buying 2 of these fuckin things that Apple is birddogging everyone for money it’s pretty fuckrd that we shell out the big bucks for their products! It’s fashion now! Buy the new one yearly what’s next Apple products coming out seasonally? Well im a sucker like all of us. Wonder how much money I’ve given Apple in my life time? I feel likes it's not much sealing itself but locking the screen so the water doesn't activate the touch and make your watch make calls or do crazy things
lol you dont know much about the apple watch do you? it does lock the screen, but touch sensitivity is still active and is not affected by the water

These types of touch screens (capacitive?) Like on all the phones now act really wonky when wet or not at all when under water.

I feel like you really only have to do that after you submerge it in liquid to make sure there is no liquid inside. It’s what I’ve always done with not issues.

Pushing the button will seal the watch?😂😂 😂... Someone gave you some wrong information. no need to press anything to make the watch water resistant. The water lock function of the watch is to lock the screen from touch for under water use and once you finish your pool or ocean water work out you unlock the watch screen lock by simply rotating the crown and by doing that the speakers will create a sound to eject the water from the speaker. You really don't even need press the lock function before going into the water, but after you do make sure you do it to eject the water from your speakers just like you said.

It scared me!!! Cause I went into the pool did some laps and then I unlocked it when I took a break and when I started again I didn’t turn on the swim tracker. Almost had a heart attack!

TK Bay dude it doesn’t matter the sealing of everything in a Apple Watch is incorrect as he said up^ this feature is ONLY so all you have to do when you get out of the water is twist the crown to release sound to disperse water in the speakers rather than going through effort to go into setting turn on the feature it’s a tiny screen
Edit: it also stops your screen from going wonky in the water you can’t touch the screen under water so why try? This feature helps

I was wondering about this because I saw the workout app and on it it had swimming so I went to trusty google and I saw this in video and it helped SAVE my Apple Watch
Don't shower with your apple watch because the shampoo and stuff may deteriorate the sealing and it's not resistant to how water (if you shower hot). The software 'sealing' function is simply turning off the touch screen and prepares the speaker when you come out of the water (this can also happen if your AW detects that you're in the water). No 'internal water resistant mechanisms' will be activated by software

The water feature doesn’t seal itself FYI
It’s waterproof without the feature
You can hear when the water is inside of it, the water doesn’t go directly inside the Watch, it goes inside the speakers which will affect the sound quality of the calls, sound alerts, etc... After you got your Watch wet you should turn on and off the feature until you can hear the sound clear again from when it starts to when it ends. Avoid getting sand and soap in it, and rinse it after you wear it while on the beach bc the water contains salt. I know Tim Cook wears it to shower but he could just go and grab a new one whenever he wants.

There is no waterproof setting. It’s always waterproof that just prevents weird calls when you’re swimming

It doesn’t magically seal the phone it just prevents the water from making the watch do things like call people.
Let me just put this out there... If your taking any device into salt water it is a very good idea to rinse the device off with fresh water afterward to prevent from chemical reactions with the salt. Also, avoid getting sand in the device.

I know the Apple Watch wasn’t really decided for scuba diving and I know the Apple Watch is a smart watch and not the watch scuba divers have that tell them the depth and everything but can the Apple Watch tell you the depth of the water when you dive down so like say for example I dives to let’s say between 1 and 10 meters so maybe something like 6 meters would it say on the Apple Watch 6 meters or does it only measure distance and not depth?

Question i have is, is it dryer proof because i left my series 3 in my pants after washing it in the washing machine and leaving it in the dryer as well, now it wont even turn on.
you should not have it in high heat cases as it will damage the water resistance

I would say unlock the watch when your all dried off because if you do it when your wet water might come back into the speakers and defeat the purpose.

This is misleading, waterlock is not a mechanical lock, it’s stops accidental taps when in water
it serves 2 things, stopping touches and expels water from the speaker. both in conjunction with the water proofing that it has help you keep the watch working when you are swimming
TK Bay You are correct here, but in the video you make it appear that the watch mechanically seals itself whenever you turn on water lock, and that is not the case.
I recommend making your own comment explaining the misunderstanding and then pinning it to avoid confusion.

The watch doesn’t have any moving parts that seals it shut. The water button only disabled the touch screen.

HELP I SWAM WITH THE WATER LOCK ON AND NOW IT STOPPED WORKING. I used it about 3 days ago and it worked fine and now the screen is just completely black and I had the water lock when I was swimming for about 30 minuets I need help please!!

Water lock doesn’t stop water from getting into the Watch, the watch itself is water resistant. Water lock stops the screen from responding to the water’s “touch” and then can eject the water from the speakers at the end of the swim session. You can also just turn it on after swimming then immediately run it to the clear the speakers and you’re good.
+Michael McNulty you are right but that mode also stops accidental touches to the display. So it's recommended to have it on before doing laps and accidentally turning off the tracking by mistake.

as long as you are not in the water for 2.5 hours straight. in and out and around will be fine. but this is not intended to be in the water for hours.

The watch itself is made waterproof. There is no “sealing” mode, that is misinformation 🙄🤦♂️ Using the water drop icon places the watch in a mode that auto logs swimming laps, and prevents the water from opening apps and such on the screen. It also makes it easier to purge water from the speaker using the Digital Crown

just start it before you start your swim but in between laps you have to unlock it otherwise the water might accidentally turn off your tracking
