There were a few I didn't know at all who would whisper stereotypical things about me. For instance, this kid named Jonathan asked if I used bacon grease in my hair every time we saw each other (we both played trombone in the band). Initially, I thought he was cool, so it caught me off guard. Then there was Juan, who would make racist remarks about black people in class every other day, despite being Puerto Rican himself. I never understood why they were so boldly disrespectful towards me without even knowing me. I love older, more mature Mexicans though.

He created it for jazz musicians like Duke Ellington and others, who were gigging all night but didn't have a chance to eat dinner, but it was almost breakfast time too, so hence the combo was born. When people heard about it they went nuts over it. I met him as a kid, then later as an adult I hung out there, when his widow was running it until it closed in 1999.
