Two friends of mine, one Australian guy and one Norwegian girl, they didn't get along well and argued. Christmas season this song started playing and we were all sitting in a room in Ankara, Turkey. All of a sudden, when this song started playing the Aussy guy and the girl from Norway got up and started dancing together, as though they were best friends... This song literally united two people who didn't otherwise get along at all. It was an unforgettable, magical moment to me. From that day onwards this song has become almost sacred to me. It was then I understood the power of this song and what it means to Western audiences.

Couldn't resist listening to this song this evening. George, you were so talented and I hate that you are gone. RIP. At times, I feel like when these wonderful artists die it takes a part of my 80's childhood with them. Every since I was a teenager, I have LOVED listening to this song at Christmas time. There's just something about George's voice. He was one of a kind.

Today is the 8th year anniversary of the passing of this musical genius. I still remember where I was when I learned of his passing. Saying I was shocked would be an understatement. The timeless beauty of this song is a perfect example of George's talent. After the countless remakes of this song that I have listened to, none of them measure up to the original. The arrangement, instrumentation and vocal are just pure pop perfection. Still miss him and the music that he would have created if he didn't leave us so early. This song, along with Everything She Wants and Careless Whisper are probably some of the best songs in pop music history. How many songwriters have the privilege of creating a single masterpiece, let alone a multitude? Not many.
