  • In this episode, we will learn a new ESP32 Board called the ESP32 UWB also known as ESP32 Ultra Wide Band. We will also look at a real-life example application of the board. The ESP32 UWB is a custom board made by Makerfabs specifically designed for Indoor Real-Time Location Tracking. It can be used to create AirTag Like devices

The battery life with these is horrendous. You'll need to lug a big power bank with your "tag" at all times. Check out DWM1001c ($30) or DWM1001DEV ($25) - it is a module that has the same DW1000 chip but instead of battery guzzling ESP32 it uses NRF52. It also has an accelerometer so your tag does not have to broadcast when stationary, further improving battery life.
Estimated battery life of a two-way ranging DWM1001c tag with a 400 mAh battery is around 200 days. With a transmit-only tag (TDoA mode) you'd get somewhere around 2-3 years on that. It also comes with location-tracking management system firmware (called PANS) that you can pretty much use out of the box.

      do you have a link for the DWM1001c ($30) or DWM1001DEV ($25) ?

Prices are from Mouser Electronics (Canada) and LCSC. They have been out of stock a while ago, but now they’re back.

Hello. I am trying to communicate two ultra wideband bu01 dw1000 chip using esp32 d1 mini without any breakout board. What i did was to etch a pcb board and only solder the necessary pins to communicate 2 uwb with each other. The pins soldered was the SPI pins (CLK, MOSI, MISO), CS pin ,IRQ pin, RSTn, VSS, and VDD3v3. But it just doesn't work. Any ideas why?

Now we just need to add a gsp. Receiver to each anchor and we can build a GPS rtk system :)

Hi Naveen, thanks for the video! Is it technically possible to create a private RTLT using DWM3000 and AirTags both together ??

    So you need 3 x a $40 device to test, right ?

Sadly yes. Hopefully there should be cheaper alternatives in future.
