Thank you! My mother in law got me this game for Christmas, thinking it was a puzzle. I enjoy games, but I hate learning complicated games, and I have no experience with this type of game. I read the instructions, and almost gave up on it before even playing a game. I was completely lost in the rules, and the last two pages, describing the knowledge tiles that change all the rules, almost finished me off. But I consulted RUclips...watched three of your videos, reread the rules, and played a successful game! Your videos were very helpful. We are snowed in, and plan to play again tomorrow.
At the end I would have converted the one into a two and place the science tile next to the castle, which would have completed a "village" (or whatever) and score 11 point since it's still 1st round.
My wife and I are about a year into the hobby, and I’ve been watching a lot of CoB videos to see if it is the right next-step game for us. But every video about CoB practically assumes you already know how to play. (Who doesn’t? It’s a classic!) This was the first CoB video where I had an “a-ha” during the rules explanation where I actually understood the game mechanics. Now I’m like, “That’s so simple. That’s not very different from this and that and the other game we’ve already played.”
Thanks... My wife and son opened box last night and gave up after 30 mins trying to figure out the gsmeplay. Your video helped a lot. We will give it another go tonight.
Parties at your house must be pretty wild! "There's a pasture full of four cows, that's actually pretty nice...about as good as it can get with farm animals..." 4:51
At the start when you said you had to do a re-shoot because you made a big mistake, I 100% understand this. The rulebook for Castles definitely would not win any awards for ease of use and clarity! The language in the rules is very odd in places, the diagrams are sparse and often they explain the written instructions that are easiest to understand anyway. Was not a fun book to read haha.
Not sure if this has been said yet or not, but, a few times, Rahdo says that the special power of City Hall is to add another building. However, its power is to let you add another tile of ANY kind. I know he said it around minute 9, but I think he says that earlier as well.
Just played this for the first time ever, yesterday. My young son and I loved it! Funny thing is, he was pretty much the start player most of the game and rolled mostly sixes with the white die, as well.
Just picked this game up and am excited to play it. While watching your video I noticed something that could have been fairly beneficial. On your very last turn, you had a science building and had rolled 1s. There was an open 2 science next to your latest castle which would have finished a section and given you the 10 bonus points since it was still the first year. Seems like it might have been beneficial to finish that area while the bonus was so high.
In case you miss it, ~8:15 radho rerolls because the (5,3) got disturbed and turned into (5,5). For a moment I thought it was a 'reroll doubles' rule or something.
This is the way I have played so far - one player running two boards. Although I call my second board "Jessica Alba". ;) So far, I am really enjoying it. I don't usually like soloing Euros, but this one is fast and fun. The lack of hidden information is a big plus when playing multiple sides.
Great explanations, can't wait to get this game and play with the family! I thought the camera work was appropriate for the amount of stuff to look at while being close enough to differentiate between the pieces. Also, good use of iacta alea est.
I saw some people commented that you should of turned your 1 into a 2 at the end of the year to place your science tile, but I didn't see anyone say you should have also bought the pigs from the center and played them into the pasture with the other pigs with your other 1... Just another 21 points you missed out on in the fist year, lol...
I was thinking of getting this. Although you say it goes much faster when the other person actually plays, I can't help to think it is such a one player game. I understand that whoever gets the first player token gets first choice but after watching all the videos from play-through to extended to final thoughts it doesn't seem like much player interaction. I really love games that keep both or all players engaged by lets say... like Agricola where you place and then I place then etc etc. It flows smoother with less player down time. This game just seems like you take your whole turn then wait for the other person to take their whole turn and just work with what you got left. I understand for some it can still be fun but I am getting spoiled by the other mechanics that games are coming out with that mitigate this.
In your last turn you could have used a worker to turn a one into a two and place your science tile left to your new castle completing a one tile village right before the 10 point bonus for the first year decreases
great review as always but I have also find some mistakes like when you build that city hall or what is that called, it allows you to build another hex tile of any type not just a building like you did and on the last turn when Jen played the boat she shouldn't sell good but take the one's depo's goods.
@@PauloRenato23 I believe the timestamp for the mistake mentioned by József is 20:06, the one refering to Jen's turn when she should have taken goods from a depot instead of shipping goods.
19:45 You get 2 points for the pigs, but you moved your score marker 3. You were at 15, then should have added 2 and then another 11 afterwards to land at 28.. So 20:05 should be 28 points, not 29.
A lot of people criticize the number eight player board that you are using since it's easier to completely fill areas for quick big points in the early rounds. What do you think Rahdo? :)
Late to the party, but didn't see anybody else comment - 16:30 - you did a shipping action, should you have been first player after that? (Not sure if since you did it as a bonus action if you get the full power of shipping). Keep up the great work!
You didn't see anyone comment on that because there's no error in what Richard did :) You don't change 1st player by shipping things... you advance on the Turn track by playing boats to your board
If I understand the question correctly... you may not use workers to change the value of the white die (i.e. you may not adjust which depot the good gets dropped into at the start of the round). Was that the intent of your question?
How come you didn't just place the science tile to the left of your 2nd castle by using a worker to turn the 1->2 and then just turn the other die into workers? Wouldn't that have earned you 10 points?
Great video, I've been really curious about this game. Wish I wasn't watching it full screen though, I got nauseous with all the whipping the camera around the board. ;)
Paulo Renato 22:50 You are placing the science tile and mention to put in on the 4 and 3 dice, but there is an additional option to put it on the 2 dice (next to your new castle) which would be cheaper since you'd only use 1 worker... right?
Luis Pinto Yes, that's right :) Don't know if that's worth making a note thou because that's not a error by Richard, he just didn't see that option and if we were to make notes about different ways Richard could have played there would be no video, just annotations :p
Sometimes I think, I'll watch raldoh. Then after a confusing back and forth with subtitles that correct his every move and a dose of motion sickness I think why don't I just read the rule book.
yup, that's from back when i was filming with my phone. ever since i bought a couple of camera, i now always offer static cam versions of my runthrough (going back 5 years now)
for the last several years, i have done exactly that on all my videos. this was one of the first 100 or so games i ever filmed, with my iphone. done over 1000 now, 800 or more of them as you suggested
yup, i think i started doing the static cameras in mid-2014 actually, so missed this one by a year. this was when i was still filming with my iphone :)
yup, this is a really old one. also, it's worse than other ones of that earlier "film with iphone" era because what happened was i did a full runthrough, made it live in the evening, realized i'd made a big rule goof, took the video down, and then refilmed on the spot. but since it was later in the evening and was getting dark in the castle we used to live in, i had to use the light from the iphone itself to be able to see anything, hence it looks awful. if i ever get the new 'deluxe' edition of burgundy, i should really go back and do another runthrough :)

Yes, I just came to say that!

oh so many games i now want to buy after watching your videos. now if i just had ppl to play with.
Thanks to the tutorial. You summed up in 10 minutes what seemed like a complicated game. We played this last night and has so much fun!
At 5:00, the City Hall actually lets you place any type of tile from your storage (not only buildings).
Castles of Burgundy is my #1 game of all time!
jonjon2222 noted... thanks
Thanks... My wife and son opened box last night and gave up after 30 mins trying to figure out the gsmeplay. Your video helped a lot. We will give it another go tonight.
I got motion sick watching this. Love the explanation, hate the first person view.

One of my favorite games of all time!
Just played this for the first time ever, yesterday. My young son and I loved it! Funny thing is, he was pretty much the start player most of the game and rolled mostly sixes with the white die, as well.
Thanks for the runthrough. I usually don't have issues with manuals, but I was struggling after a couple paragraphs. This cleared up a lot!
I enjoy these runthroughs. Picked this game up on amazon based on your runthrough
In the last phase of the first year/round you used the boat to ship/export, but shouldn't you have taken tiles from a depot?
Good review, thanks!
yup, i was a doofus there. i've already added a note :)
Just picked this game up and am excited to play it. While watching your video I noticed something that could have been fairly beneficial.

You're such a champ Rahdo! Thanks for doing these reviews

22:40 - why not put the science tile in the 2 slot to the left of the castle?
+Isaac Thimbleby because i was blind! :)

I don't know if I find this funny or sad :-D
Mr Rahdo - you are awesome!
Great explanations, can't wait to get this game and play with the family! I thought the camera work was appropriate for the amount of stuff to look at while being close enough to differentiate between the pieces. Also, good use of iacta alea est.
Jeff Goldblum!!! Yes!!! Totally hear that! A great compliment for sure

+Errol Wilde Should HAVE. not should of.
+caledfwlch45 wow really...
Really. The grammar is real.

@@alfonsogonzalez8196 thanks for the help... I went to check and it's actually at 22:06 and it was already noted on the Klingon Subtitles. Cheers
"just one more round..." , you are as bad as me!
This was a great runthrough. Totally helpful.
Great video even with the shaky camera work and all. Hehe. Made me decide on buying this game.
I just picked this one up. This video will help me learn to play. Though I will have to resist picking up Richard's do-over habit. ;)
19:45 You get 2 points for the pigs, but you moved your score marker 3. You were at 15, then should have added 2 and then another 11 afterwards to land at 28.. So 20:05 should be 28 points, not 29.
Go Jen, you can do it!
A lot of people criticize the number eight player board that you are using since it's easier to completely fill areas for quick big points in the early rounds. What do you think Rahdo? :)
+Joshua Fessenden 'fraid i don't have an opinion... i'm still enjoying the boards that come with the base game! :)
+rahdo I can see how it may seem unbalanced, but I share your thoughts! ;) I hope there will be a digital version soon!
Still got the dell dimension with a floppy drive?
+Brandon Morris yup, with the double 4:3 monitors :)
I'm never playing dice with you, Mr.
Can't you use a worker to alter your dice when buying tiles from the main board?
Late to the party, but didn't see anybody else comment - 16:30 - you did a shipping action, should you have been first player after that? (Not sure if since you did it as a bonus action if you get the full power of shipping). Keep up the great work!

You don't change 1st player by shipping things... you advance on the Turn track by playing boats to your board
D’oh, shipping and boats aren’t the same! Now I need you to cc my goof ups too ;)
How many workers total are you allowed to add or subtract from any specific die roll placement? 1, 2, unlimited?
Jake Kamps as many of the worker chits as you have IIRC :)
Great video - thanks for doing this. Don't take this the wrong way, but this video made me think of you as a very caffienated Jeff Goldblum.
Princes of Burgundy in France? Not Burgundy?
What rule did you muff on your first playthrough attempt?
Can you use a worker to change die roll for depot or just placement?
yup, you can change your die no matter what you're doing with it :)
thanks for clarifying that. All the videos I see of this game use workers just for placement
If I understand the question correctly... you may not use workers to change the value of the white die (i.e. you may not adjust which depot the good gets dropped into at the start of the round).
Was that the intent of your question?

Rahdo, are any of the expansions worth purchasing?
Julian Nimmo they're nice to haves, but certainly not necessities
Honestly, very good walkthrough and I like your videos. But, Man, you need a tripod!
for the last 3 years or so every video has a static cam tripod option in the show notes. this is a much older vid :)
Can you actually use 3 workers to change by 3, I thought it was one only??
yup, you can use as many workers as you like in a given action
22:26 you said 2 points but moved it 3!
Damn, Jenn deserves a gin and tonic.
at one point you trade one dice for 2 workers... that can't be right can it? the player cards list that as a 2x dice action..
+Chris Aaron Richard is right... it takes 1 action to get 2 workers and 1 action is spending 1 die!
Cheers, i was looking at the 2 dice on my board. I see now that's the game makers way of marking that you can use dice.
I can tell this is one of your older videos Rahdo. You had not mastered your steady hand lol
You could've put the science on the 2 for just one worker, right?
timestamp please?
Paulo Renato 22:50 You are placing the science tile and mention to put in on the 4 and 3 dice, but there is an additional option to put it on the 2 dice (next to your new castle) which would be cheaper since you'd only use 1 worker... right?

Paulo Renato Ohhh yes, of course. I was just checking that I understood the game correctly!
Luis Pinto fell free to ask any other questions :) We are here to help :)
ahem the tile that allows you to build stuff instantly can build ANYTHING
if it was at 8:35 it was already noted... please turn on the Klingon subtitles to see where Richard goofs up… Thanks :)
Sometimes I think, I'll watch raldoh. Then after a confusing back and forth with subtitles that correct his every move and a dose of motion sickness I think why don't I just read the rule book.
every video i've done for the last 4 years features static cam option if you check the show notes
:) that's o.k. Its still a fun video. Very helpful!

yup, that's from back when i was filming with my phone. ever since i bought a couple of camera, i now always offer static cam versions of my runthrough (going back 5 years now)
Dude please place the camera in a fixed location and record that again. 3 is a charm.
for the last several years, i have done exactly that on all my videos. this was one of the first 100 or so games i ever filmed, with my iphone. done over 1000 now, 800 or more of them as you suggested
try not to keep moving the camera please
on all the vids for the last 3 years that i've filmed, there's a static cam option linked in the show notes :)
but this video doesn't have such link. :)
yup, i think i started doing the static cameras in mid-2014 actually, so missed this one by a year. this was when i was still filming with my iphone :)
If I lived in a castle I’m afraid I’d feel obligated to ONLY play D&D by the fire. How DARE you play any other game! 😇
Camera and lighting is not as good as your other videos. Skipping.
