Thanks for this wonderful experience. I think Oscar Peterson is absolutely awesome and this interview really gave me better insights into the person. What a great and wonderful experience listening to this interview.
Andre Previn, Like many others with Powerful Talent, Deserve Recognition for what they have Accomplished by adding to the world through their Gifts...and making Life that much Easier for the Next 1 in Line to pick up the Touch and Run with I T!!!
The serenity on Oscar's face when he's playing belies the thousands of mental calculations (per second!) that are going on as he develops a tune in his signature fashion. I know I can't even think as fast as he executes!
@@mcmikah Thank you for explaining that! I feel that is a crucial part of how improvisation works.. people think it's being conjured from thin air, when really even the best improvisation is just the rearrangement of certain prepared/practiced elements..
Thanks!! That one piece has converted nme to jazz! My cousin in New York is manager of Eldar Djangirov (known just as Eldar!) a very young pianist with, I believe, a great future. Just a plug, I know, but try him out anyway! Saw him at Ronnie Scotts last year and he's sweet and enthusiastic and very talented, so might attract young people to jazz - especially the girls! Enjoy the music. H.S.
I would like to comment about the ckassical music played jazzy. Tatum did it, Garner used classical themes. I do also think if Chopin were alive he would be playing jazz, maybe like a Bill Evans. By the way, i love these 2 pianists! Health and wisdom to all, Erik the Netherlands
fantastic talent and what warmth between the two musicians. My favourite part when I watched the interview was 'Wheatfield' - which video is that on? Haven't time at the moment to go through them all!!
Sarah Morley The title is ‘Wheatlands’ and it’s from Oscar’s album ‘Canadiana Suite’; the ‘monster blues’ Previn asks him to play is from the same album, and the title is ‘Hogtown Blues.’
helensarah -- that would be part 5 I think -- Wheatland starts right after Oscar did some Nat Cole and Basie and Previn asks to play one of Oscar's own compositions... Then the Beautiful Wheatland is the first one Oscar plays...
I find it amazing, that while watching this on RUclips, that I noticed that the video jpeg compression was getting corrupt on the fastest parts of the video, notably the keys of the piano... you could almost say that Oscar is too fast for the jpeg compression, and you can see it each time he hits a key...
Love is a simple thing? Nice stride, nice voicings. A tempo and out of time. He gets above the tonic and adds or deletes tensions to resolve the harmony to the tonic. I think Oscar prefers to play his own notes. When you play classical music you have to play it as written. A good jazz pianist can play on a bad or good instrument.
Nice voicings and nice stride? Is that all, just nice? The man was a genius. His voice leading is sublime, as is his sense of time and rhythm, accuracy, speed and invention.
I’m going to have to disagree with your assessment of performing “classical” music. Every good pianist has his/her own sound and interpretation that is absolutely unique to them. If every pianist played all the vast piano repertoire exactly the same which is a challenge in itself due to the number of editions that have been made for every piece, it would all sound incredibly bland. Thankfully that’s not the case, good musicians look through the notes and notations on the grand staff and create a colorful story. Great jazz musicians realize this and respect “classical” pianists as most couldn’t attempt to play the more difficult piano repertoire written by the likes of Maurice Ravel, Liszt, Beethoven etc and the vice versa. These are two completely different & fantastic art forms. To say a formidable concert pianist whose practiced for tens of thousands of hours couldn’t play on any instrument put in front of them is utter rubbish. I know this for a fact and it’s one of the difficulties of being a pianist. We don’t get to carry our instruments wherever we go like a violinist or guitarist. We are stuck with whatever instrument that’s laid before us and we get used to it because we have no choice.

Obviously Peterson is a remarkable talent, but what strikes me more is his humanity.
And humility. All the greatest talents, in any sphere, have it.
I saw this as a kid in 1974 and I recorded it on my cassette player and listened to it over and over again, so to see this again is amazing.
that's so sweet... also, thanks, was trying to figure out what year this was! :)
I was wondering when this was recorded. Thank you.
Two master musicians who are also wonderful conversationalists and raconteurs. Lovely and inspiring.
OP to me was simply a Musical Genius and very humble man! RIP Maestro! X
One of Jazz's true angels...wonderful to watch.

Such an inspiration for all musicians. So special, so talented, and so much wonderful music.

What an absolutely wonderful opportunity, to listen to these amazing musicians from past times. Yet, where are the jazzers now?
This is a gift.
Thank you

You were right about Eldar.
@@pjbpiano Yeah Lol I wonder what happened to this lady though thats the real mystery
Love is a simple thing from the beginning

lol shitting on Jacques Loussier. I like him

They threw some pretty heavy duty shade at Jacques Loussier there at one point.
I picked that up,too. I enjoy Loussier’s interpretation of Bach, Vivaldi, Satie and many more. It’s jazz even if purists may disagree.
5:49 andre previn on third stream "classical music."

This is the greatest jazz pianist of all time I think it’s a bit better than “nice” don’t you

I think it's "Try a Little Tenderness"
What is the tune at 3:05?
Darude sandstorm
It's called "You look good to me" Oscar recorded on his trio album "We get requests"
They say it, "love is a simple thing"
