The scene where Strawberry Sunrise insults apples and makes Applejack angry is the funniest part of the whole episode. While I will admit that Strawberry Sunrise was a little too harsh saying all those mean things to Applejack, the latter pretty much deserved it.

Exactly. While I agree that fashion can be ridiculous, but it's their passion. Honesty to improve one's creativity is one thing, but she was being downright insulting towards the designers. Applejack has a different taste over all.
Cowboy hats are actually a purely practical functional item for farm folks, especially older farmer types. They help keep the sun out of your eyes and your face/ears from burning in the hot sun when you are spending the entire day working outside in the sun. Helps to keep you a little cooler and also keeps at least some of the dirt and mess from constantly getting in your hair.
Excellent point, though AJ wears it pretty much anywhere, including inside, plus I'm not sure horses or ponies require it due to their coats protecting them. But, I think I'm thinking about it too much now. XD
It's not entirely their coats that protect from the sun, but that with the exception of pure white hair areas on horses (like Rarity's entire body) horses have black skin. Rarity would have pink skin and would have problems with sunburn in areas of lighter hair coat.
I liked this episode. Some people dislike it and say Applejack was "out of character" or "flanderized", but I think it's just a side of her showing that we don't get to see often. Kinda like in Hearthbreakers, she seems to be so sure of her values and views that she looks down on things she doesn't understand. In that episode it was the Pies' "weird" traditions, in this one it's fashion. And to be completely fair, she WAS asked to be honest, and the opinion that fashion is ridiculous isn't even that strange. As for flanderization, personally I think that most of the mane 6 actually STARTED pre-flanderized, so to speak, and have been gradually getting de-flanderized throughout the seasons. A lot of their personalities have gotten less one-dimensional, for example, RD is much less of a stereotypical dumb jock than she was originally (she's gotten way more mature), AJ has this new traditionalist aspect and not just "yeehaw apples honesty", Pinkie quickly got depth to her with the "smile" song, Fluttershy's overcoming her shyness, etc etc. Edit: Also, the moral is great, though some people seem to misunderstand it. It's not "lie to be nice", it's "if you don't like something it doesn't mean it's just bad, some people might care about it a lot, be nice". Kinda. Anyway, a pretty essential lesson XD (and now allow me to list episodes and characters of this show that just suck and anyone who likes them is wrong)
Actual Moral: Honesty and Opinion is NOT the same thing. You can tell someone your honest opinion but that is still only telling your opinion, it DO *NOT* MEAN THAT YOUR OPINION IS THE SAME AS THE TRUTH! Fashion is frequently impractical and ridiculous, but that is often also why it can look _really GOOD_ , and Fashion is mostly about *looking good*.The true test for the contestants would have been "How practical can you make it, while still keeping it fashionable?".
That interpretation is all kinds of vague and murky. Opinions get confused with taste a lot, but opinions and truth are like apples and oranges. AJ always said it was just her opinion, I don't think she ever even used her favorite phrase "it's the honest truth" or anything like that. But by AJ's every criteria, fashion is pointless and silly. She has every right to voice such an opinion, but what needed to be learnt was limiting yourself because people are passionate about different things and your honest opinion can really hurt someone's feelings. Learn to tell when your opinion is unnecessary, that kind of thing.
I found myself relating to AJ in this episode more than any of the others. Her views were actually justified and she made some pretty good points. Plus, the fashion 'experts' never point out what's so good or special about each outfit they complement. Is that really the right kind of criticism?
Moral of the episode: If you are fall out with someone, you can kidnap and tied them until they do not want to make up with you. So children, if someone does not wanna be friend with you, kidnap her and talk her into want to be one.
Applegeek. I have to say you are one of the few reactors for MLP to really has good things to say. You may not be an analyst or reviewer and I like your most neutral approach to these reactions. You showed how to see a series just to have fun as well as the lessons it teaches us at the end, and despite your love for Applejack you are not biased as the vast majority is because it's A or B character the episode or story is bad. I like Starlight, Flash and Equestria girls but people would then come and say that I shouldn't and I'm wrong for liking them, heck i would get maybe an eyebrow raise from you since well I'm not a fan of Applejack. If you listen to how she says some things, AppleJack was honestly seeing all of the outfits as to how it could benefit/be against farm work. She wasn't taking in how some ponies might just want to look/wear something nice and instead thought everything should just be work related.
You know, I actually figured out the subtle differences in the two belts. The one Photo Finish holds is a lighter shade. It's incredibly subtle, but it's definitely there.
Your own reaction to Rarity shreading Pinkie Pies guitar, was priceless and was my exact same reaction to that. Its a good thing that Rainbow Dash wasn't there to see that, or Rainbow Dash would have giving up playing the guitar.
I want to see that goth pony in the future. How about an episode where the cutie mark crusaders buy gothic clotes from her and go to school dressed as goths? Imagine the look on Cheerilee, the other students and the main 6 faces. And how would Diamond Tiara look as a goth? I bet Spoiled Rich would really freak out.
I kinda was expecting Applejack to say something bad about strawberries, but than I remembered that she likes them cause she ate some on her pancakes in the episode Castle Sweet Castle.

You know what I'd like to see? Maud Pie, Inky Rose, and that one unicorn from "Canterlot Boutique", the one who was drawn to the dress inspired by Luna, all forming their own "Deadpan Goth Group." The fact that one's an earth pony, one's a Pegasus and the last one a unicorn, well... Also, yes: Maud said she could shred on guitar like nopony else (she might have been joking, but with Maud, its always hard to tell), so she and Rarity jamming out together would be *epic*... heh, maybe they can include Inky Rose and Goth Unicorn Girl (did she even have a name?), and Rarity can don a goth getup? I mean after all, Rarity was/is a member of that one quartet group, why shouldn't she be apart of another singing group? XD
I love the moral. it's OK to have a true honest opinion, but there's a difference between saying your opinions and being rude and saying bad things about it. it's better to give constructive criticism and still be kind. other than flat out saying "awful! no one would wear that!"
She wasn't rude, she was just honest. She didn't insult any of the ponies' work, so she wasn't being "rude", she was just stating her opinion on fashion in general. Rude is when you're intentionally trying to wind someone up, or insult them, or when you are completely inconsiderate of someone else's feelings. Although they were passionate about fashion, and I guess it's good that AJ learned something about expressing her opinions, Rarity basically shouldn't have asked her to be a judge. I get the lesson of the episode, but it seemed like everypony was kinda extra in this episode except AJ. She just did what she thought she had to, and she didn't do anything wrong, at least not intentionally. If those fashion ponies can't take it when AJ expresses her opinion about their work, then it shouldn't have been judged by her. So please don't say she was rude; nothing that happened in the episode was her fault, and she had no intentions of hurting anypony's feelings. She was even genuinely concerned about it at one point, saying she wasn't sure if they liked what she said to them after telling them what she thought of their work the first time they showed it to her.
For a minute I thought Applejack was going to say " That dress conjures up images of...that time I tried to make dresses when we got our cutie marks swapped."

Awesome, glad you got something more out of it! One of my biggest goals when I started doing this was to encourage thought and discussion about the lessons in these episodes, so I always love hearing that others have gained insight from my commentaries. :D
I liked this episode, it's just that Applejack was a bit too much; especially when she ruined the mare's hat with the feathers on them. Feel free to call fashion ridiculous (Because it can be ridiculous at times) but don't ruin someone's hard work like that, that part made me really angry at Applejack for that. But, I did like that she learned her lesson, and Rarity shredding on the guitar is just amazing to see. The fact that it wasn't fan made was also awesome. Great reaction and can't wait for more! XD.
Another thing Applejack failed to consider regarding practicality is that ponies would not be wearing these clothes to work, heck they would likely rarely even wear them outside. Practicality for clothes like these tends to often come down to "can I walk in them or not?"

Personally, I thought she had already learnt it before the series started, considering her comment during the dinner at the Pie Family's Hearth's warming. Essentially: Honesty is about being truthful, however, *opinions are not the truth* ! It is possible to be honest about ones opinions, yes, but said opinions are still not the truth! ******************************************************************************************* Certain aspects of Fashion is ridiculous, but to me, that is part of what makes it interesting, experimental, and even gorgeous at times, same with the impractical parts. AJ could have just satisfied with pointing out if something wasn't really practical, i.e. the truth, but the other 3 judges should have acted as a counterweight, as in "how much practicality can you handle, and how much do you need do sacrifice?".
All very good points in this comment thread. The actual issue in this episode wasn't honesty, but rather respect. Applejack was totally honest, in that she gave her honest opinion rather than sugar-coating anything or only telling them what they wanted to hear, and while honesty is nice, you can be honest while still being respectful of others. Applejack by her own admission didn't understand fashion, but rather than try to ask questions in order to understand it better, she just tried to force her own opinion as the only valid one. If she had done that first, her understanding could have improved, and her opinion would have changed. Again, she simply failed to respect their profession, and unfortunately went so far as to ruin that hat. Nobody has the right to come in and just ruin something you worked so hard to create. I really do wish she had apologized for that specifically, but it seems she made up with everypony in the end, so it's all good.
I have a bit dark outfits in my home but my style is mostly shine and colorful, I watched many fairy tailes and I just love these shine, beautiful fairy outfits, dresses, shoes and I love beautiful magical worlds.
Those designers are quite characters. Lily Lace specializes is fancy, lacy, gowns & dresses, yet has a Valley Girl accent. Star Streak has a fancy posh accent, yet he looks like a mad hipster scientist and makes "future" clothes (most them look more retro than futuristic but what's old is new these days). Inky Rose though true to her gothic attire, yet is a bit of an anime junkie (some of these clothes look like they came from animes) & was the only that designed men's clothes in the contest (and I'm guessing Tunnel Web, her model, is also her boyfriend 😉🤭).
Sparity is a total guilty pleasure for me. It's absolute wish fulfillment, not that they'll get together, that's dumb, but that "functional infatuation" is sustainable. I know it's bad for me and everyone else, a cancerous idea that will give anyone a bad experience if they're ever stupid enough to try it IRL, but I just melt every time I see it. sigh.
In my opinion the part where Rarity played Pinkie's guitar was the best part of this whole video. (Especially considering that it only had 2 strings to play it)

I liked this episode. Some people dislike it and say Applejack was "out of character" or "flanderized", but I think it's just a side of her showing that we don't get to see often. Kinda like in Hearthbreakers, she seems to be so sure of her values and views that she looks down on things she doesn't understand. In that episode it was the Pies' "weird" traditions, in this one it's fashion. And to be completely fair, she WAS asked to be honest, and the opinion that fashion is ridiculous isn't even that strange.
As for flanderization, personally I think that most of the mane 6 actually STARTED pre-flanderized, so to speak, and have been gradually getting de-flanderized throughout the seasons. A lot of their personalities have gotten less one-dimensional, for example, RD is much less of a stereotypical dumb jock than she was originally (she's gotten way more mature), AJ has this new traditionalist aspect and not just "yeehaw apples honesty", Pinkie quickly got depth to her with the "smile" song, Fluttershy's overcoming her shyness, etc etc.
Edit: Also, the moral is great, though some people seem to misunderstand it. It's not "lie to be nice", it's "if you don't like something it doesn't mean it's just bad, some people might care about it a lot, be nice". Kinda. Anyway, a pretty essential lesson XD (and now allow me to list episodes and characters of this show that just suck and anyone who likes them is wrong)
Actual Moral: Honesty and Opinion is NOT the same thing. You can tell someone your honest opinion but that is still only telling your opinion, it DO *NOT* MEAN THAT YOUR OPINION IS THE SAME AS THE TRUTH! Fashion is frequently impractical and ridiculous, but that is often also why it can look _really GOOD_ , and Fashion is mostly about *looking good*.The true test for the contestants would have been "How practical can you make it, while still keeping it fashionable?".
That interpretation is all kinds of vague and murky. Opinions get confused with taste a lot, but opinions and truth are like apples and oranges. AJ always said it was just her opinion, I don't think she ever even used her favorite phrase "it's the honest truth" or anything like that. But by AJ's every criteria, fashion is pointless and silly. She has every right to voice such an opinion, but what needed to be learnt was limiting yourself because people are passionate about different things and your honest opinion can really hurt someone's feelings. Learn to tell when your opinion is unnecessary, that kind of thing.
I found myself relating to AJ in this episode more than any of the others. Her views were actually justified and she made some pretty good points. Plus, the fashion 'experts' never point out what's so good or special about each outfit they complement. Is that really the right kind of criticism?
Well Applejack, you've reached SugarCoat levels of honesty...and even I think she wouldn't be THIS blantantly honest

Applegeek. I have to say you are one of the few reactors for MLP to really has good things to say. You may not be an analyst or reviewer and I like your most neutral approach to these reactions.
You showed how to see a series just to have fun as well as the lessons it teaches us at the end, and despite your love for Applejack you are not biased as the vast majority is because it's A or B character the episode or story is bad. I like Starlight, Flash and Equestria girls but people would then come and say that I shouldn't and I'm wrong for liking them, heck i would get maybe an eyebrow raise from you since well I'm not a fan of Applejack.

If you listen to how she says some things, AppleJack was honestly seeing all of the outfits as to how it could benefit/be against farm work. She wasn't taking in how some ponies might just want to look/wear something nice and instead thought everything should just be work related.
I like episodes when Rarity learns something, but I really love it when Rarity is the teacher.

You know, I actually figured out the subtle differences in the two belts. The one Photo Finish holds is a lighter shade. It's incredibly subtle, but it's definitely there.
Your own reaction to Rarity shreading Pinkie Pies guitar, was priceless and was my exact same reaction to that. Its a good thing that Rainbow Dash wasn't there to see that, or Rainbow Dash would have giving up playing the guitar.
I want to see that goth pony in the future. How about an episode where the cutie mark crusaders buy gothic clotes from her and go to school dressed as goths? Imagine the look on Cheerilee, the other students and the main 6 faces. And how would Diamond Tiara look as a goth? I bet Spoiled Rich would really freak out.

it's OK to have a true honest opinion, but there's a difference between saying your opinions and being rude and saying bad things about it. it's better to give constructive criticism and still be kind. other than flat out saying "awful! no one would wear that!"

She wasn't rude, she was just honest. She didn't insult any of the ponies' work, so she wasn't being "rude", she was just stating her opinion on fashion in general. Rude is when you're intentionally trying to wind someone up, or insult them, or when you are completely inconsiderate of someone else's feelings. Although they were passionate about fashion, and I guess it's good that AJ learned something about expressing her opinions, Rarity basically shouldn't have asked her to be a judge. I get the lesson of the episode, but it seemed like everypony was kinda extra in this episode except AJ. She just did what she thought she had to, and she didn't do anything wrong, at least not intentionally. If those fashion ponies can't take it when AJ expresses her opinion about their work, then it shouldn't have been judged by her. So please don't say she was rude; nothing that happened in the episode was her fault, and she had no intentions of hurting anypony's feelings. She was even genuinely concerned about it at one point, saying she wasn't sure if they liked what she said to them after telling them what she thought of their work the first time they showed it to her.
Generally, farm hats are made to protect the head from the sun and prevent heatstroke.
It can also keep the sun out of her eyes

I liked this episode, it's just that Applejack was a bit too much; especially when she ruined the mare's hat with the feathers on them. Feel free to call fashion ridiculous (Because it can be ridiculous at times) but don't ruin someone's hard work like that, that part made me really angry at Applejack for that. But, I did like that she learned her lesson, and Rarity shredding on the guitar is just amazing to see. The fact that it wasn't fan made was also awesome. Great reaction and can't wait for more! XD.

Another thing Applejack failed to consider regarding practicality is that ponies would not be wearing these clothes to work, heck they would likely rarely even wear them outside. Practicality for clothes like these tends to often come down to "can I walk in them or not?"

Personally, I thought she had already learnt it before the series started, considering her comment during the dinner at the Pie Family's Hearth's warming. Essentially: Honesty is about being truthful, however, *opinions are not the truth* ! It is possible to be honest about ones opinions, yes, but said opinions are still not the truth! ******************************************************************************************* Certain aspects of Fashion is ridiculous, but to me, that is part of what makes it interesting, experimental, and even gorgeous at times, same with the impractical parts. AJ could have just satisfied with pointing out if something wasn't really practical, i.e. the truth, but the other 3 judges should have acted as a counterweight, as in "how much practicality can you handle, and how much do you need do sacrifice?".
All very good points in this comment thread. The actual issue in this episode wasn't honesty, but rather respect. Applejack was totally honest, in that she gave her honest opinion rather than sugar-coating anything or only telling them what they wanted to hear, and while honesty is nice, you can be honest while still being respectful of others. Applejack by her own admission didn't understand fashion, but rather than try to ask questions in order to understand it better, she just tried to force her own opinion as the only valid one. If she had done that first, her understanding could have improved, and her opinion would have changed. Again, she simply failed to respect their profession, and unfortunately went so far as to ruin that hat. Nobody has the right to come in and just ruin something you worked so hard to create. I really do wish she had apologized for that specifically, but it seems she made up with everypony in the end, so it's all good.

I have a bit dark outfits in my home but my style is mostly shine and colorful, I watched many fairy tailes and I just love these shine, beautiful fairy outfits, dresses, shoes and I love beautiful magical worlds.

Lily Lace specializes is fancy, lacy, gowns & dresses, yet has a Valley Girl accent.
Star Streak has a fancy posh accent, yet he looks like a mad hipster scientist and makes "future" clothes (most them look more retro than futuristic but what's old is new these days).
Inky Rose though true to her gothic attire, yet is a bit of an anime junkie (some of these clothes look like they came from animes) & was the only that designed men's clothes in the contest (and I'm guessing Tunnel Web, her model, is also her boyfriend 😉🤭).
Sparity is a total guilty pleasure for me. It's absolute wish fulfillment, not that they'll get together, that's dumb, but that "functional infatuation" is sustainable. I know it's bad for me and everyone else, a cancerous idea that will give anyone a bad experience if they're ever stupid enough to try it IRL, but I just melt every time I see it. sigh.
