- My first sublimation print attempt with a mug and heat press. The video covers my failures and eventual success.
These were the guys who helped me figure out what I was doing wrong.
www.inkexperts...
Great video Rick, it's nice to see the whole process, warts and all. I am sure any budding newbies will find this useful.. To think two of your mugs may have travelled around the world already.. Yeehaa! :o)
Watching as I had a disaster first mug print. Thank you for advice
Very interesting. You have the the patience of Jobe Rick . Well done. I think my little dogs would look lovely on a mug , no copyright involved 🤣
Very cool Rick. I never knew how mugs were printed before. You can make your own line of Merchandise. Looking forward to your next star gazing night.
Well done Rick! Got there in the end 🙂
After a few bad mugs I just gave in and got a Cricut mug press, had no issues since.
really appreciate it.
Brilliant well done top notch in the end. Very interesting thank you.
Do you have to use a special printer? Have you tried with ink jet printer
Thank you. Very helpful
thank You for help:)
i just came for the process of mug pressing, as im just starting out myself and just 23 seconds have passed and my mind is boggled! you have put sublimation ink in an epson inkjet printer?! i had no idea this is possible!
i have an epson exotank as inkjet myself and now got a sublimation printer from a friend. and the sublimation printer has a waste tank ... which makes me wonder if it would destroy the inkjet printer if there is no such thing as a waste tank?! i have no idea but im wondering .. 😅
my understanding is that you have to but a new printer and only ever use sublimation inks in it from day1 , so it is a dedicated sublimation printer, there is no mixing/matching option with regular ink.
Thanks for sharing
Would have been useful to know the name of the Printer Machine!
Pre heat the press to 400deg. For the 3 minutes that’s all u need buddy
thanks a lot man
So what do we have to do for the right one? My English is not so good, so can you type the method for me please?
Hi was that 400 farenheit or celcius ?
good day where can I get the cone attachment?
What program did you use to get the images in the right size ?
Photoshop elements 👍
Can you use any printer? Where did you buy the mug
Epson has a new dye sub printer for $400. It's the surecolor f170.
Awsome bud!
Holding the cups too close to the camera, a bit further back would be better :)
you need to low the temperature do 350 temperature for 1 min
U need better papers & press
Thank you for your share. what a great review. But I think you just waste your money on the Chinese product.
you don't need to pre heat the mug, just let the mug heat press get to 200c ish as you sad and clamp it down and leave in for 3 mins and by then its hit 400c and take it out? your problem was leaving it in to long , YOU DON'T NEED TO PRE HEAT THE MUG AND THEN TRY PUT PAPER ONE? it gets messy lol i had a problem when i did a pure black image? i did the normal time like you did in this video and it goes brown but if you only leave it n there for a minute it comes out a bit brown looking and then turns back to black? weird i know! good luck buddy have fun.
It's very useful watching someone doing something for the first time, it is like a shared learning in progress. Thank you.
I used to do this in my old job.. we used to take the mug out the press and before peeling the paper off, put the mug into a bucket of water, hold it in for a few seconds. Take it out and then peel it... that was ten years ago so maybe things have changed... Good luck either way 👍
If i put it after i take it from press mug machine directly to water the mug won’t break 😅 ??
you are also supposed to actually pre-press all sublimation blanks to get rid of any excess moisture, even the most tiny bit. i learned this when doing glass chopping boards i wasted 5 to realise the boards had some moisture even though i could not feel it...it soaks into the coated side. glass boards and coasters pit a piece of a4 normal paper over top and press them for 5 seconds and d it maybe 3 times
sometimes you can see the moisture on the a4 paper
First time I’ve watched any of your videos because I have only just got my Mug press today.
And before trying to print out a mug myself and taking into account that I know absolutely nothing about printing mugs, T-shirts, plates or anything.
I turned to RUclips watched your video Rick and now I feel much more confident about starting so thank you very much for sharing your first time doing a mug press print.
I will definitely be subscribing to your RUclips channel 👍🏻
I followed the step by step quite a few times and my print just won’t print on my mugs, I’m using sublimation ink, paper and mugs yet still having no luck, I’ve set correct temp and pressure and still not working any help please
What is the paper size please
Very nice rick! Never even crossed my mind how they make mugs like this haha feel free to send a discoloured ones my way i will use it with pride hahaha
Hahahahahhahahahahahahaha the same exact thing happened to me yesterday. I wish i saw your video before i wasted like 3 mugs on the same print 😂
l am looking for these machines how can.l.get them l am in Zimbabwe
Thanks for sharing! Great to see the step by step process and trial and error. 👍
I just watched Steve & Michele’s live stream from their quarantine hotel. The mugs you made for them are brilliant. Well done you.
Well Rick I though I'd have a hard time getting into your new hobby. But this video was interesting, if nothing else to see how the process works. I guess you could try screen printing t-shirts next, though that would probably be a step down. But you could make a nice little business out of that. I remember a vlog you made many years ago when you unboxed a "Rickvanman" mug that was sent by CafePress and mused how the shipping was too expensive to make it worthwhile. Now you can do it yourself and cut out the middleman.
Brilliant, well done Rick! Very interesting. The final version looks very professional, I’d buy one 👍🏻😄
I just got done doing the exact same thing!😂 Learned so much from you!
Thank you Rick! This was a fantastic video. Currently awaiting all my supplies to get started!!
Thanks for posting this video.
what size wat your print ?
Brilliant…. I don’t who was more excited, you because of your printing success or me because of a new video 🤣🤣
Love this video !! Mine came out the same as yours your 1st few . I raced to sink and washed them n nope they where fails 😭 thank you for the video even showing mistakes ECT loved it loved the honesty
Can someone help me. I'm looking for a software to do the prints. I'm able to get all equipment but the program for pc I cant find it
I use Photoshop elements 2018
Hey Rick, Absolutely brilliant with your Mug printing, I would design your own at some point, just think how awesome that will be to have your very own design! Great video 😊👍
So, in the end, how did you correct the colour?
Great Tutorial vid Rick
Lovely results in the end. Look forward to seeing Rickvanman mugs for sale soon !
Keep up the good work
Best wishes
😊👍
Thanks so much for showing your mistakes as well as the right way. It helps us to avoid making those same mistakes I appreciate you
Hi, can I ask if the Epson printer is a sublimation one or did you buy it and now just use sublimation inks in it?
sublimation only yes.
Thank you very much
What are the border parameters?
God knows what you do for a living but you spend lots on equipment from one project to another .
Yep, I figured life is short. Gotta follow wherever the passion takes you and shape your life in such a way that you are not constantly held back by lack of resources. It's the only way to live as far as I'm concerned.
Great video ... Loved the reality from failure to achievement. Great tips and advice 👍
Great video!
Rick what printer kit did you choose from the Ink Experts. As in the EPSON printer model number and why is that the model you chose, because there are so many eco-tank models and what was the overall cost of the printer.
Cheers Rick I'll be waiting for your reply
The mugs look great, even the discoloured ones.
brilliant thanks for the video im after one myself so will check out that website where you got yours I have plenty of that heat resistant tape its kapton tape I use it for fixing phones etc when I have to apply heat to remove charging ports etc 👍 👍👍👍👍
At least you have a matching set of brown mugs LOL
😂😂
Thank you sir very much! This video saves me money and time! you've got my subscription for life time =)
Very interesting video mate. Great feather in the cap to be able to do now. Love the mug you did for me. Very vibrant and the image looks part of the mug itself. :)
I shouted at my computer.... REVERSE the print!!!! Turn the machine on before you print so it's nice and hot. Don't pre-heat the mug. ONCE the machine has reached temp... just put the mug in for the 200 seconds in for 190 Centigrade. (Do not reverse on glass... if you are sublimating on a glass clock or such there is no need to reverse the print on the white side of glass... it shows through glass.)
Thank you for this video. So should I only place the mug into the press once it reaches 400F and start timing? Or let it sit in the mug whilst it climbs up to that temperature and start the countdown even before it reaches 400F?
Nice ... You know what Edison said: "I just found 2,000 ways not to make a lightbulb; I only needed to find one way to make it work."
Aren''t you supposed to let it heat up to the required temperature and then put the mug in for roughly 1:30? I've seen some other videos about dye sublimation mugs and they all set the machine to a certain temp and once it reaches that temp, they put the mug in. Cooking for 3 minutes seems a little long.
Change your mug supplier.. now that I have seen the end of your video... yet see my comments below.
Did you use a normal printer or do you need a special one ??
I’m opening an anime store in a year. I’m gonna sell a lot of stuff and mugs is one of them. Learning this was a big help. I can’t wait to sell anime stuff once the construction & modeling is finished.
Wich program are you printing from the sizing is difficult with most programs
Hello i have added you.

Doesn't need that much time.. that's what I just seen in the last 7 videos
I’d like a ‘Toni Reviews’ mug please 😊👍
This might be two years old, but very helpful. Thank you.
Very nice Rick!! I was going to say I’d buy one of your mistakes except they turned out after all and then copyright lol!!
good video thanks
Another Super-Video...! Thank you very much Rick...!!! Greetings from the Netherlands!!!
My mugs are pretty cold especially this time in the winter i will try to pre heat one today or maybe just tomorrow, to see if i get a better result, if it fixes my problems i will surely get back to this video.
I'm gonna do this the same technique and then I'll comment when I'm done.
What a great video ❤
Didn't you mention the brand of the mug press heat machine ?
Great and useful video. Thanks !
3 minuten in de video.. laat me raden... je hebt het ontwerp niet gespiegeld afgedrukt?
Might have to change the channel to RickCraftMan. Glad you worked it out.
Loved watching this. Nice one Rick. . Thanks
Nice. Looks like great fun. How much would you say it works out to make each one and can the same printed sheet be used more than once ?
Top job Rick, are you taking orders? 😛
wrap a piece of butcher paper around the print b4 u put it in the press
What model of heat press are you using Rick?
Just getting into mug printing. What was the issue with the colour and how did you correct this?
Was the word impregnate it necessary 😂😂😂 good job
Hi Rick,What printer did you use 😊
Thanks very much for this Rick, first time watching but its been absolutely invaluable!
Great video. Can you do one showing how you set up the temperature and times on machine please.
Thank you so much for this.
Wow never knew that about the residue. Interesting. Glad you figured it out
Thanks! Love your information. It probably will be helpful to me as I have not made my first mug yet.
Can I not just go buy mugs from the dollar store
Brother. Thank you so very much for making the video. Amazing and well explained detail by detail, it has been the best video from mug sublimation that I have ever seen. Once again thank you my friend. God bless 🙏
Glad it helped
If at first you don’t succeed......great result!👍🙂
