I'm a single mother with not only limited income but very limited education on repairing any appliances... after watching your video on how to replace my oven door latch I feel like a professional...Lol
Thank you for posting these videos, they were quick and simple to follow....
Now my house won't smell of gas because the door wouldn't latch correctly unless I shoved a chair up against it....
    Thank you again
    Happy holiday cooking...:)

    Hello,
I have a 25 years old oven and it was working great. The other day I ran the self-cleaning and the self-cleaning cycle was interrupted. After that, I could not unlock the latch to open the door. No error code is available on this oven but something is holding the manual latch and won’t release it. The manual handle is on the outside of the oven door, but I was told not to force the latch open as I could cause more problems.
The oven is a GE JB550GJ and the latch is a manual lock. You slide the latch handle from the left to the right to lock the oven door for self-clean. (I searched the Internet and most solutions for unlocking the latch are for automatic locking mechanism, not for manual latches.)
I powered the oven down for minutes then powered it on. I gently sliding the latch to the left but it won’t release. I tried to run another self-cleaning cycle, but it won’t start the self-cleaning now. Do you know how to release the manual door latch? My specific questions are:
    (1) What is holding the manual latch and not letting go? Is there a way to unlock the latch? What are the specific steps required to reset this specific oven and to allow unlocking a manual latch?
    (2) I have the user manual but it only talks about how to use the oven. I need a service manual to help me understand how the latch got stuck. I searched the Internet but I could not find a service manual for this old model. Do you know where I can download a copy?
    (3) If I pull the oven out and access the back of the oven, is there an easy way to unlock the oven from the back? Do you think my old GE has a locking pawl inside the back panel which I can toggle to unlock the latch?
    (4) I searched the Internet and found no parts relating to the locking mechanism. Do I need new parts to repair this problem after I get the door to open so it won’t happen again?
Thank you for your help. Phil

I found a manual on the Internet.
      www.geappliances.com/search.php?search_query=JB550GJ&tab=manuals
Page 6 in the manual; Part #9 is the latch handle that got stuck to the right (lock position) and the oven door can not be opened.
      Thanks.
      Phil

Do the tops of all ovens open this ways? I have a 20 years old Viking and the lock is stuck in the locked position. I tried to open the top but it is not opening like in this video

  • @appliancepartspros
    @appliancepartspros  11 лет назад

Most tops lift off in this manner, maybe a little different but similar. Viking and some of the other high end products design theirs differently. So this video may not apply to yours. I would suggest that you get your model and serial number and ask the question on our forum hopefully one of the techs there will have some information on the older Vikings.

Instead of replacing this part which I prefer not to as I will never run the self-destruct (aka. self clean) feature again, can I not disable this motor so I can remove the locked door error on my panel to give me access to my oven again? Thanks!

The self clean cycle is notoriously hard on ovens. There are a couple of parts that could have gone out during the cycle. We'd be happy to help you diagnose which part may have gone out. We offer free technical advice and diagnosis. You can give us a call at 1-877-477-7278 or you can chat us at our website: www.appliancepartspros.com/ 7 days a week. We will need your model number to look up the schematics for your unit and give you accurate advice, which you can locate using this tool on our website: www.appliancepartspros.com/modelnumber_locator.aspx

There has to be something in the way, or something our of alignment somewhere. Try getting down level with the oven and looking inside as you close it, to see if you can spot the obstruction.

Without knowing what you have I would suggest looking for the troubleshooting information that came with the oven, to see if it will show you how to unlock it. You can also post the problem along with the appliance model number on our repair forum and the techs can help you troubleshoot the problem. forum.appliancepartspros.com/

    • @themaximusone

ok the latch is either in the front or the back mine got stuck with the door open and clean mode on lol so i took off those cheesy shields in the back and whala there was the latch motor i took it out with manipulation you will see when you do it let it hang Plugged it in 3 times you know the good old in out in out lol then it reset itself on the 4th time i plugged it in it slowly went around and then with more manipulation i got it back in saved $192.00 and went on with a working oven :) hope it helps , the problem is folks are unsure of themselves simply unplug it and turn gas off thats it then if the parts are to expensive at this site or the other i provide screw it 500 gets you a new oven :) www.repairclinic.com or www.appliancepartspros.com
