Wow, I, a hardened Baroque purist, am quite impressed by this, despite the wrong vocal assignment. I can't wait to hear his Bajazet (from "Tamerlano"), as it probably is the ultimate Italian Baroque tenor role. His coloratura is impeccable, and he's always been an expressive singer, with more than enough passion to burn the stage down. I'm just glad that more and more "mainstream" opera singers realize singing Handel is one of the best ways to show off what they can REALLY do with their talent.

This is the first Classical singer I've really been inspired by and paid any attention to. He sings with real expression. I know because I can feel it.

Maestro Handel must be proud of Villazon's performance, he loved and hired the greatest voices available to sing his operas. This is the first time I really love this aria. Unbelievable performance, please purists and haters vanish away.

Actually, although the aria was written for a tenor Handel himself approved it as an alternative aria for the tenor in 'Poro,' so he had no objection to a tenor singing this aria. And Villazon is superb.

I seen remarkable, supreme artists such as Rolando, Del Monaco, Pavarotti, Domingo, Bartoli, Netrebko, Fleming, Genaux and the like being harshly criticized and told "not sing this or that". I laugh at people criticizing real artists! Go ahead, keep bashing at Rolando and other great artists, keep making use and misuse of your "freedom of speech", go ahead, expose yourselves!

This is the best villazon has sounded. I loved him before this, but my god this is wonderful.
This is my absolutely favorite video. I love the intensity, energy, immense concentration and vocal virtuoso of Rolando, dancing giant Paul McCreesh, the sound of Gabrieli Players and even a camera work. It looks like a mad assembly but it is wonderful. This video captured a moment of creative forces at work. I was a bit disappointed that it was not included on DVD. The CD is a MASTERPIECE.
Baroque arias allow for singers to push the limits of their technique and talent. You may most definitely prefer Joyce DiDonato's rendition of this, but do not tell a singer to "not" sing something simply because of a personal bias. The aria sits well in his voice, and besides some phrasing and stylistic discrepancies, it sounds very pleasant.

I keep asking myself why men do not sing alto arias if the range is comfortable enough for them to do so. This is a typical example that an alto/castrato aria can sound just beautiful in a true manly voice. Vollazón's voice is super well positioned, it's even throughout, interesting and full of interpretation. Congrats for RV for his bold endeavor that turned out to be a role model for more tenors, baritones, etc.

Thank you for telling me this. I´m a tenor-baritone, working with this aria to achive a better technique. I´ve been thinking that maybe this role may fit for me, listening to the other arias, but I know that role was written for a castrato.

Villazon sounds fabulous in this repertoire. He definitely sings this aria with more fire than Ian Bostridge, who should never have recorded oit. That said, Villazon fudges a few melismas--because of careless, not inability--so I hope he records a "cleaner" version of this. I look forward to purchasing this disc. Why didn't he transpose it up a semitone or whole tone? Doing so would have made the lowest notes in this aria easier to access.
If you are Mexican, listen to the magnificent Araiza, then compare...
Furthermore, Hillevifan, Villazon sings this aria with the jubilation it requires. Certainly, he is no Didonato, but he need not be. He brings something different to it. I do hope, however, that he sings mostly "true" tenor arias on this recording. I don't mind him stealing a few soprano/mezzo arias, but Handel's true tenor arias are a joy. And we've never heard a voice this rich in this repertoire. At least not since Fritz Wunderlich.

The list of arguments is so long that it's hardly summarizable.But for someone whose job and skills have nothing to do with music (at least according to himself), I'll try to explain it using very simple words: Although Rolando is a romantique singer,the baroque repertoire is suited to him; his voice is amazingly flexible, his tone rich, yet sufficiently light not to make him sound odd, his diction impeccable and his commitement to the part breathtaking expressiveness wise.

Not sure what the purists miss.... perhaps they should just turn it up LOUD. This is an amazing rendition. Powerful, full of energy and pure joy. it's rock n roll a la baroque. Magic.

You are in no position to mock deride Villazon's foray into the Baroque repertoire, given your grotesque and unlistenable renditions of Sesto's arias from GIULIO CESARE. Villazon is quite fine in this repertoire. Moreover, his decision to record arias such as "Dopo notte" is not without precedent. Handel once assigned "Rejoice Greatly," a soprano aria, to a tenor. Lurcanio, the tenor role in ARIODANTE, was originally written for a soprano.

Finally the fresh wind in the performance of barocco music! Bach, Handel and other were first of all human beings and their works are not the toys for the "barock-specialists", in reality antimusicians, who are using them for "public masturbation" during the concerts. Only to convince themselves! Like this stupid conductor who is jumping like a rubber ball, but is not able to keep the same rhytme during 5 seconds. Bravo, Villazon, avanti! P.S. @skingaz No, I wouldn't say it's no good at all - he is a fantastic singer. What I find frustrating is that the group is purportedly one that is devoted to historically-informed performance who is willing to forgo that way of thinking to bring in a 'star'. Thanks for sharing the Bream comments - he's right, in a way. Such an approach can really overcomplicate matters, however modern guitarists are still able to at least take some of the HP movement on board (David Russell springs to mind).

@Svatopluk Yes, but are there any "stars" of "Historically-informed" (really getting to HATE that phrase!) Performance? If not, then you have to "put up" with the true stars of Classical Music not quite being to your liking. As for the "HP movement" in Guitar, it has largely killed the instrument, where it has taken hold and push the guitar back a century at least. Oh, and good as Mr Russell is, I'd hardly call his performances on a very modern guitar (Byers or Danmann) especially HP.
@Svatopluk So, you're saying that it's no good then? You know, this idea of "historically-informed" really reminds me of the "Original Instrument" crowd amongst us Guitarists. As Bream once observed, to obey THEIR edicts he'd have to either stop performing 2/3s of his repertoire, or take 10 instruments on stage with him! Just ENJOY so AWESOME singing, and feel the obvious JOY that Maestro Villazon does at the music!
Good idea. What is wrong with playing any composer in a way, and on the instruments, he would have recognised. When there are hundreds of recordings available, there ought to be a few on period instruments and using period style.Get over yourself - (and I find the guitar boring. I don't mind it in a Baroque continuo group, but as a solo instrument - it does nothing for me. The chittarone, on the other hand.....)

As long as he is caught up with the sound of his voice and all the physicality that comes with and until he changes his perception about singing and what it is about he will never experience true vocal freedom. He sings against nature, which is the sole reason for the damage he has done and will do. Scrapheap in 5 years. And then they'll bring on the next eegit. We still must look to the past - the true lineage. The best exponent of Handel by far was John McCormack.

How do you know what Handel would think? ANd I wouldn't give a penny to hear Caruso sing anything. There is just too much bleating among too many tenors. Mr Villazon avoids that...to his great credit - and knows how to sing quietly in the upper voice. And his ornamentation is perfect - it sounds as it should, perfectly natural, well placed and as natural as speech. I also like Mr McCreesh's use of telescoped cadences. It avoids the 'thump thump' and keeps the music moving along. I love this performance.
