  • Burrard Exchange is a loft-like office tower that uses biophilic elements and hybrid mass timber to stand out from its context, distinct in its structural materiality and aesthetic motif. Implementing a material bound to Vancouver’s historical identity, architects and designers at KPF prioritized a strong sense of place for the tower, while minimizing carbon emissions through the use of a bio-based material.
The project is a key case study in the Material Innovation chapter of this spring’s KPF Review magazine, which showcases projects that help decarbonize the built environment through their design. For KPF, using low-carbon materials presents an opportunity to explore new ground architecturally and develop designs that make our cities more dynamic, livable, and sustainable.
