Just a love letter about writing yourself (introspective) love letters 🤍💌
What are your goals and plans for this coming year? And if you’re journaling too, what type of journal(s) are you using (I get such a thrill hearing/learning about other peoples’ set ups and stationary. So fellow stationary nerds, lemme hear all about yours! haha) 📓
I started journaling in 2016, and slowly grew into it.
It started with a small notebook, and wanting to write just one sentence a day because I heard it was a good practice. Just one sentence: about anything that I thought about/realized or a quote I heard that day, or something I was grateful for. Literally anything. At least one sentence a day , I told myself. And I quickly realized that writing was a gateway to introspection; realizing and uncovering the thoughts in the back of my brain that I had, but couldn’t really see. A form of therapy that I could do by myself (for free when I had no money).
And slowly, it grew into a practice I’d pull out when I knew I needed it. Then I began testing bullet journals and planners again, and all the different types of “second brains” out there.
I wasn’t a daily introspection journal’er by any means, but at the beginning of 2020, I realized I’d fallen off of it consistently, and with the world being thrown in the air and less time alone to think, I knew I needed more of it. And it made SUCH a noticeable difference! And even though I have my waves with journaling, some months where I remember to or have the energy to do it, it’s been one of my favorite practices. Even if the pages aren’t beautifully worded, my handwriting is all a mess, and some of the thoughts that come out feel wrong to write down. I can hold those words/thoughts separate from myself, and look at them to understand what’s going on. If I’m confused or stuck in life, somehow the page brings out exactly what I need to do next.
So in 2023, I’m looking to deepen my existing monkey mind / introspection journaling practice. And hopefully I’ll be able to say that I journaled more often at the end of 2023!
