How to get DIFFICULT balls back...Padel Defending!!

- This video gives you tips on how to get those difficult slices balls back into play.
This is a more advanced video on defending in padel, as we assume your opponent can play attacking slice shots (usually a volley or slice smash or bajada).
Mastering the back glass is the key to defending in padel. Once you understand your court position and how to get behind the ball for these shots, it also makes it easier to hit the double glass shots.
The keys to success with this shot are about early preparation with the feet, compact take back and then just "guiding the ball" with your shot to get the ball back - you do not need to generate more power on your shot.
We cover all the shots, go through the learning steps and give drills for each in this course: thepadelschool...
To play better matches you need to understand the tactical principles in padel, so in this course we breakdown all the tactics: thepadelschool...
If you enjoy learning more about padel, The Padel School blog has plenty of articles discussing various parts of the game: thepadelschool...
From the Coach
"Defending these difficult balls with slice is the next step for intermediate players to reach a higher level. If you can get every ball back in court, it makes life very tough for your opponent!"
Sandy focused his attention from tennis to padel in 2010, learning the game with several trips and courses in Spain. His education in Sports Biomechanics, combined with playing and coaching at an international level (both in tennis and now padel) puts him in a great position to share his insights in the sport, hopefully helping others learn in the process.
Great video! I’ve got a friend who can hit a nasty, flat backhand slice that has proven nearly impossible to return so I’m excited to give these tips a go.
Thanks! Glad you're excited to try these tips-let us know how they work out for you!
Your videos are Gold! Fantastic Sandy!👏👏🙏.. From Italy🇮🇹
Thank you and happy to help :)
Amazing teacher!
Very nice tip. I have been struggling with these shots for long. I will try to practise these in the next game. A great video once more. Keep on doing this, your videos help a lot.
Thanks! Your videos are best and one additional point is that you don't have jingles, introductions and other disturbing things before the video starts. With best I mean they are very instructive and easy to understand.
Thanks for another helpful video Sandy! Definitely the best padel videos out there.
I'd like to see a video about how to practice as a pair when you're only two on the court. Whats the "driving range" of padel? To get away from all those basic misstakes. Thanks!
Fredrik Cederqvist thanks for your support! Yes, I’ll make some 2 player drills. That’s where players can really work on their consistency. Players often play matches in practice 95% of the time in padel, so use those games too to practice new stuff so you’re ready for the main tournaments 👍
Really very important simple things
Yes, thanks
Great video as always Sammy! Thanks a million!
Glad you enjoyed it! Very Welcome!
Another great video! Thanks a lot for all your help and tips, Sandy! Cheers
Thank you Sandi! Great video especially keeping the elbow tucked in, all I need to do is remember this when I’m playing 🤣
Welcome...easier said than done ;)
Sandy, enjoying your videos, learning a lot! Could you please make a slowed (can't remember the right english word) video on returning the low balls bouncing of the glass. It would greatly help to see your stance etc
This is just the backhand after the glass, but it might be useful: ruclips.net/video/4qmfYTpD7WU/видео.html
@@ThePadelSchool thank you, I'll check it!
one trick i used to make sure that I am backing far enough to the glass is to actually make sure that my racket "touch" the glass at the end of my back swing. A bit extreme but it helps me to get nearer to the glass.
thanks for your insights and feedback here 🙌
Mañana juego con mis amigxs. No jugamos bien bien, pero es divertido. Gracias por este tip, mañana veo si le puedo devolver el saque a tomy. Abrazo capo
¡Gracias y buena suerte con tus amigos! Feliz de que el video haya ayudado !
Can you maybe make a video on how to implement these tips, because i find it hard to focus on all these things when practicing
Good suggestion, will add it to the list!
Great tips! Thanks! 👍
Sabeillard x thank you and welcome 🙏
thanks!
Thanks Sandy ! Perfect :-)
Thanks for your great tips! You don't really make your racket face open for your forehand rebote like backhand?
Rieko Maruyama it’s easier to drop the racket head on the forehand (therefore faster) and on the backhand the wrist is more solid...that help?!
Thanks 🔝🔝🔝
Very good tips as usual, appreciating alot! A question: Would it ever be relevant in these tight defensive situations to actually change the grip a bit from the continental grip, or do you exclusively, in all kinds of situation, use the standard grip? If relevant, Id love a in depth video covering special situation or special variation of shots where changing the grip a little bit could be beneficial!
Great question! There are minor grip changes you can use in defensive (and attacking) positions to help be more effective on the shot. When teaching these shots to a beginner up to intermediate player I would always recommend the continental grip. But at a higher level players can (and do) make minor adjustments. That would be a good "advanced" video! Give me a bit of time and I'll put that together :)
any tips when there's a touch of side spin on de slice?
Michel Raveyts the side spin doesn’t necessarily change the difficulty of the final ball position (unless it contacts a 2nd glass aswell). Once you know the direction of the side spin, you can predict the reaction and move accordingly. My advice would be to give yourself extra space from which side the rebound will go...you can always step towards the ball at the last minute, but it’s not good to step away.
Hy Sandy,
Thanks for your helpful videos that I carefully watch.
Now a completely “off topic” question: Where can I buy (on-line) SYR Rackets and specially men’s clothing.
Please keep up the great work.
Hey Paulo, thanks for your support with the videos!! I really wish I had the rackets online! Many people are asking. I’m trying to sort it out soon. Where do you live? Maybe if I have a tournament there I could bring an extra one...
Hi Sandy with regards to defence, what do you suggest when playing against players that like to power smash most of the time and don’t use the slower bandeja often. I play a lot off the back glass in a match and play a lot of lobs. Should I focus on hitting the lobs with more height so the ball drops quickly and have time to come forward. Or play straight lobs instead of cross court or ?? I don t have a lot of power in my smash btw :(
Hi Sandy, thanks for the amazing content. I still have a question though: does “the elbow into the side” stays for all the forehand shots?
Tadas Vosylius that’s a good question. The elbow into the side is more of a guide to keep compact on the shot. It is more important defending at the back, but also can be a good guide hitting in front too.
The Padel School Thank you!
🙏🏿👍🏿
Good video 's.. but you talk a bit to fast
Gina Vandevelde I try to slow my talking down...but I will try to make it easier 👍

If they have a mediocre smash, then maybe check this video out about how to defend the smash: ruclips.net/video/f-BZJgQw6wY/видео.html If they have a good smash, you might need to change the type of lob you hit - maybe faster instead of higher?! You can find that video on our channel too...
