I am mexican, my partner is german. Before meeting his family i asked him about their customs so i knew how it was appropriate for me to behave (turns out they are super relaxed 🙂). My point is, if you are getting into a new culture, and specially if you want to have a good relationship with them, it's just common sense to ask how things are done... 1. You cannot expect people to behave the same everywhere you go. That is just fully ignorant (or arrogant?) 2. It's about your partner, you want to have a good relationship with his family because you love this person, so you are the one to adapt. Its not about you! I am sure there is the delicate balance called respectful informality. And also, there is the saying: familiarity breeds contempt (it shouldn't but it does). As a sensitive person, I have been surprised and hurt countless times by my siblings in terms of their utter lack of respectful attitude when it comes to dealing with family. This was Meghan’s lack of understanding the British culture. It’s not just formal with royals. I married a British man and my mother in law would invite me over for dinner parties. Everyone also dressed very nicely, the table was set immaculately, three course meal of appetisers, mains and a dessert which was normally chocolate lava cakes. It’s lovely and I love these formal dinner parties. Can you imagine having a dinner party with the ROYALS and walking around barefoot in jeans?! I’m American and even I KNOW that is not what’s done. She makes us look ignorant.
That’s how I’m used to dinner parties being done as well. I know it’s individual between families, but we use it as a reason to get dressed nicely and make something that takes a bit more effort to eat. Even if it was an informal dinner I still would dress a bit more nice than I do when I’m just at home alone, just like I do when I go to work or even to the store. I live in Norway and not Britain.
Most of my family was born and raised in the UK and nobody eats at a table or dress unless it’s important like having family who they haven’t seen in a long time coming over. IMO she wanted her clothes choice to say, “I’m so cool that I’m not star-struck about meeting you”. Also, when telling the story of her first meeting with W and K, most people would have simply recounted, “I was wearing jeans…” but M specifically says, “I was wearing ripped jeans”. It was a conscious decision to try to portray a certain look. I’m not suggesting for a moment that M should have worn a twin set and pearls, but smart/casual would have been more appropriate for dinner - with something on her feet!

As a Japanese-American, I know I don’t need to bow with white Americans. As a Japanese-American, I know I don’t need to hug my Japanese relatives in Japan. One culture is not better than the other just because they are different. It’s also not super difficult, all you have to be is a bit mindful. I've seen another video of Princess Catherine hugged the midwife who helped her on the birth of Princes Charlotte when she was attend royal engagement. And also that's a proof that RF didn't do racism like she mentioned, the midwife is black woman too. The princess take a glance and stopped immediately, hugged the midwife then continue the walk to attend the engagement.
There is also lovely, more recent footage of her stepping out of a crowd to hug an older man who used to be her teacher. She had a genuine look of delight on her face. So did he. ☺️

First of all she knew who they were. Second: I'm American and am also a hugger...and I know plenty of Americans who are huggers. Probably depends where you come from and how you were raised. What is the normal dress? I am not a huge Meghan fan or care for the royal family. For me, dressing normal is literally ripped jeans and if I'm in my own house I do prefer to barefoot. Keep in mind Meghan is British, she is American. So jeans is normal in American esp if they are in their own home.

This was Meghan’s lack of understanding the British culture. It’s not just formal with royals. I married a British man and my mother in law would invite me over for dinner parties. Everyone also dressed very nicely, the table was set immaculately, three course meal of appetisers, mains and a dessert which was normally chocolate lava cakes. It’s lovely and I love these formal dinner parties. Can you imagine having a dinner party with the ROYALS and walking around barefoot in jeans?! I’m American and even I KNOW that is not what’s done. That’s how I’m used to dinner parties being done as well. I know it’s individual between families, but we use it as a reason to get dressed nicely and make something that takes a bit more effort to eat.
