    34:18 «you don't matter all that much to them. So what?»
    The last thing Chuck said to Jimmy: «I don't want to hurt your feelings, but the truth is you've never mattered all that much to me».

    There are also parallels between Werner and Mike's son; they were both killed for being too good/naive for the criminal circles they inhabited.
    Mike became the very thing he hated. His grave flaw was believing that he could remain clean (stick to an honorable code) while entering such a dirty world.

      I love this tiny detail. It says so much about him and how much he really regrets what happened to Chuck. It makes the weird theory some fans have that Jimmy genuinely lost love for Chuck so unfounded. Dude was pushing down his grief the entire time, it was an act, a front

    I think you touch on a really interesting aspect of Jimmy's plan when he brings up the idea of "saving" the judge from a fire- except I personally drew a different conclusion. Because he uses the same story for Huell- he saves a bunch of old people from a fire which made him a hometown hero. It's fake of course but the fact that Jimmy keeps returning to that specific imagery throughout the season... to me it comes from a place of Jimmy not being able to save Chuck from his own actions and his inability to deal with the guilt more than the inability to deal with the grief. It's why he's so happy to unload it on Howard at the start of the season but deep down he's well aware of the truth. If only he had a time machine...

      this is the same assumption i made when the fire-rescue story became recurring for jimmy. i think it could go either way, tbh. i’d never considered tyler’s take before but i think it’s equally juicy and equally likely… i think it comes down to the viewer’s perspective on how aware jimmy is of the shape of his grief

    • @TylerAlexander
      @TylerAlexander  4 месяца назад +10

      Why not both? 👀 It would make sense to me that his inner, complicated feelings in regard to Chuck's death would manifest themselves in different ways. To name a few: his desire to save Chuck, his bitterness at their last meeting, anger and belittlement at Chuck's perception of Jimmy. I feel it's a safe leap that the way he's working through these feelings of grief wrap themselves up in stories that involve fire; something so intrinsically linked to how he now thinks of Chuck.
      With all of these feelings that go every which way in regard to how Jimmy feels this season after Chuck's death, it tracks to me that these stories he creates represent all of those things at different points. Maybe that's why there's a few interpretations, because to some degree they're all true?

      @TylerAlexander The great thing about well written and executed narratives is that you can derive multiple meanings from the source material and have them all substantiated depending on the context with which you view it. Better Call Saul is great because there is no right and wrong answer for most interpretations. Did Jimmy bankrupt his father's store through little drips and drabs? Or did his father actually bankrupt the store by being an easy mark that put doing the right thing over the wellbeing of his store? Perhaps one is true, perhaps the truth is somewhere in the middle. It's all of subjective viewing and so there is no right and wrong answers as the show itself allows for so much interpretation.

    I've been waiting for your examination of this episode from the beginning of BCS 😀 Did not disappoint, sir! I especially appreciate mentioning Bob's acting of Jimmy/Saul, because it really is amazing that, with the awesome skills of the writers and actors combined, we can really dive this deeply into the psychology of the transition of a fictional character. And, knowing that the actors know that we know they're playing a character, they can fool us by acting like the thing we're supposed to know they're acting as. I mean, you're absolutely right -- Bob has been inserting "tells" the way Bryan Cranston did, like when he made it clear he was being a "bad liar" in performing in front of Skyler. By removing those tells, Bob and Bryan can pull off these fantastic reveals with these emotional plot twists. As the LM Reactions channel said of the Lilly of the Valley reveal: even when you _expect_ it, it still hits you like a ton of bricks. Truly a phenomenal show, and an impressive follow-up/prequel to another already-phenomenal show.

    This is my favorite episode of any show. A lot of things I could comment on here but one thing I’ve noticed more recently - the editing style of including only the first few words of the scholarships, is quite funny, but I think there is a deeper meaning, that affirms what Jimmy said - the panel already makes up their mind before the person even says their first few words.
    In my opinion this episode and particularly the court scene is Jimmy’s best scam in the whole show, because it “scams” Kim as well, and most of the audience too. I thought he was being legit, which the first scene of this episode smartly primes you for that. Your comment on him saying “I’ll do everything in my power to be worthy of the name McGill” I disagree with, I think that is a case of him thinking he is not worthy of it at all, hence the immediate name change - and he sees himself as “Chuck’s loser brother”. Also I love the final shot of Kim, she looks so lonely in the frame. Jimmy completely emotionally abandoned her in that moment

    • @TylerAlexander
      @TylerAlexander  4 месяца назад +2

      I can totally see the scholarship thing, it's a really good point.
      To clarify on the McGill line, my intent there was to examine what his intent was in that exact moment when he said the words. His changing his name immediately would still support that as he said he only just decided to change his name - I think a lot of his words in that room were chaotic in where they stemmed from. It was 'improv', a 'flow'. Anything he said could have meant one thing or another and the next moment he could change his mind. I feel as if that's what makes the scene so fun to examine.
      That being said I really only made that point as a possibility of meaning, not really something I'd stake a lot on, truthfully.

    I think the reason why Jimmy's attitude towards Chuck's death in this season isn't necessarily healthy is we saw how he was dealing with it and how he was silently grieving up through the funeral, until Howard visits and confesses about the insurance and how he forced Chuck out of the company.
    If Jimmy was acting this cold and distant from the off then I think it could be argued more that this could be a healthy way of grieving and dealing with the loss, but theres such a stark change between his demeanor before and after finding out he may have been responsible for his brother's death that to me it seems like his behaviour this season is purely self preservation and walling off whatever pain and emotional turmoil that revelation would cause him if he allowed himself to think about it. Like "Chuck was alive and now he isn't" definitely can be a completely normal reaction to losing someone who you had such an abusive relationship with, but in this instance I think he did have a very different reaction, then upon hearing that Chuck's death was not only a suicide but that he at least contributed to it pushed him over the edge.
    I also think there's something to be said about how it wasn't the events at the hearing- something that was underhanded, but also justified and kind of an equal battle between the brothers- that pushed Chuck towards his suicide, but Jimmy vindictively lashing out after the fact.
    I think the way their dynamic worked, Jimmy may have honestly thought it was impossible for him to hurt chuck. And the fact that this seemingly insignificant swipe from him hit chuck so hard and so irreversibly after everything they had done to each other probably added to the shock, that this monolith he'd been up against perhaps the entirety of his adult life was in fact human, and now is gone.

    Absolutely wonderful and insightful reaction as always, I live for these vids.
    I think the scholarship scene is such a wonderful throw back to Kim's excoriating monologue to Howard about Chuck giving Jimmy the "chance" to sit on the scholarship board. That Chuck would never ever dare to have given Jimmy that award. And she's right in so much as how much the experience of sitting on that committee confirms to him how little Chuck and all of his colleagues ever thought about him.

    the biggest factor that drive jimmy and chuck away js the fact they arent as different from eachother as they think
    Now they have two differences that they dont see eye to eye on.
    1. Pov on hard work
    -Jimmy is a short cut taker he can be a go getter he isnt lazy but prefers a faster routes.
    -Chuck is hard working in a traditional sense where he is by the book.
    2. Rules and their value
    -jimmy sees rules as a form of absalutism that is so inside the box it lacks any flexability for net gains 2 wrongs for three rights.
    -chuck on the orher hand beleives if its not against the rules nothing is off the table. Like him threatening to sue howard and threatebing the firm he can justify to himself because its legal.
    Now how are they not that different well. A peice of subtext people miss is that chuck doesnt actually think his brother can't change but rather he dilutes himself to beleive that jimmy can't because he doesnt want jimmy to succeed. This is not over analyzing and if you ask chucks actor he would tell you the same thing. If you watch the show chuck always changes his stance on if jimmy will change if jimmy wasnt a lawyer and chuck holds more of a grudge that jimmy is loved more than him than any of the crimes jimmy commits. Chuck also emphasises in his chicanery momment and your not a real lawyee mommebt how jimmy makes people laugh and how jimmy is mkre loved then him.
    Jimmy passed the bar somthing that im going to point out is raddiculously hard to cheat on that i am not even going to go into detail on. not even chuck argues that he cheated and its pretty clear jimmy passed legitimately mean so radiculous that i cant begin to explain why. Yet chuck still argues jimmy isnt a lawyer.
    Now a differebce i didnt mentiob between chuck abd jimmy is that jimmy is motivated by people. Where chuck is motivated by ego and insecurity.
    Chuck is a charater written to
    parralel for walter white and they have the same exact flaws of self perception and ego
    They both are brillaint narcastic men that self justify their actions and behavior saying its for a greater purpose. Probably why jimmy subconciously wanted to work with walter.
    However back to jimmy and chuck both of them in very simalair ways justify their actions and like to shift blame on others.
    Jimmy convinces himself he never cared about chuck to run away from his feelings. Chuck convinces himself he never loved jimmy to as far as chuck knows howard firing him over him for his mental instability. Jimmy justifies ruining a seniors life because he beleives that they will make upm chuck justifies ruining ernies life and putting the jobs of hundreds of employees on the line because he is on the line. They justify what they are doing in very similar ways and what is important to note is how chuck treated jimmy is what resulted in jimmy becoming saul.
    Jimmy is motivated by people more than anything. Jimmy would give his life for kim even if it doesnt seem like it. Jimmy makes sacrifices for the people he cares about whether its kim season 1 for chuck season 2 the senior in season 3.
    Jimmy's able to make positive change and negative change when he is motivated by people.
    This ks very importsnt because in order for jimmy to become saul goodman jimny has to lose everythibg he has ever cared about.
    In season 4 Jimmy has become so used to diluting himself and blaming others that he rather than coming to terms with things will lose himself.
    Jimmy mcgill dies when nobody is left he cares about.
    Whats tragic about the fall between jimmy and chuck isnt about a brother who cant change and the jerk older brother having a point.
    Its tragic because its about two people not helping eachother to grow but tear eachother down to the point.
    Jimmy and chuck both pushed themselves and eachother to their lowest point
    Chuck was left to become alone in the world and have nobody left and nothing to live for.
    Jimmy was left with nobody and only the role of saul goodman as a distraction. Later on gene without the distraction
    The momment saul goodman the shady lawyer was born was in winner when kristy esposito was rejected from the firm because it taught jimmy the wrong lesson that the world gives no second chances and that they will never offer you a hand to change. Jimmy's take away is the oposite of howard hamlin who learns to beleive in second chances. But its to late jimmy stopped beleiving.
    Spoilers for season 6 the ending.
    In saul gone saul has officially gotten to his lowest point but has a scheme that almost worked that reduced his sentance to 7 years in prison. However when jimmy finds out kim has taken responsibility fkr her actions it makes jimmy remember what mattered to him. Kim is the only person left who knows the real jimmy mcgill. Jimmy would rather spend the rest of his life knowing somebody can see the real jimmy than spend it free as the empty husk known as saul goodman.
    Peter gould has stated that jimmy isnt technically redeemed because redemption is making up for all of your past actions and that isnt possible. However he also stated jimmy will never repeat the same mistakes he made and he has learned his lesson finnally changing.
    Some might take the idea you cant make up for your past as a means to say its to late to change.
    What better call saul has to say is thats not the case. In life there are a lot of things you cant go back on and for jimmy mcgill its a guilt he will have to live with for the rest of his life with his hair falling out over the pain and loss. However, what is important for change is to take responsibility
    For jimmy mcgill he could never change on his own and thats because we need people to motivate us to become better.
    Chuck was able to almost overcome his ehs with the help of getting close with his brother. In season 3 chuck at his lowest point but jimmy was willibg to put the past behind him and repair things but after pusbing jimmy away he lost the thing that deap down mattered to him which was wanting to be loved and his EHS got so bad it is what lead to his end.
    Jimmy through the power of love as cheesy as it sounds found it in him to grow past hos problems and change into a better person.
    If chuck beleived in him jimmy would of changed. He almost did but chuck pushed jimmy down a path of giving up on himself. The past can be unforgivable but if somebody wants to become better its important to give them atleast a chance because through the help of others the people who want to change maybe will.

    I like your theory about them fudging the letter, but I don’t think it’s true. Even if there’s some truth to painting Chuck as a cruel man, it isn’t a truth the bar association would want to hear, so it wouldn’t serve as a good manipulation tactic.

  • @jellybabiesarecool4657

    What an episode. This episode in particular is a good one to compare to past episodes and see the irony in Chuck. We know from Pimento and that flashback with Rebecca that part of Chuck's spite for Jimmy is probably subconsciously because Jimmy has a natural way around people and Chuck doesn't, but we know from the opening scene that Jimmy isn't the one to blame for this because he tried his best to get Chuck to join in on the fun. That's the first bit of irony; the next is how you bring up Jimmy having to work so much harder than so many other people who get into law, yet Chuck claimed he wasn't when saying "I worked my ass off to get where I am". What's interesting is how after Chuck said that line in Pimento, he accused Jimmy of "cutting corners", then in this episode he tells the girl to "cut corners". This highlights the main irony with Chuck in that his excuse to go against Jimmy was because of "Slipping Jimmy", but that ended up causing him to go back into "Slipping Jimmy" and down the path of Saul.
    In the pre-titles, as well as Chuck singing "the loser has to fall", he also sings "the gods may throw the dice, their minds as cold as ice" which is how Jimmy feels about Chuck and everyone else who looks down upon him. This is also reminiscent of the power Gus has over Mike now.
    So many fantastic scenes in this episode. The opening scene causes me to get emotional whenever I hear that song by ABBA (as well as the fact it's a bloody good song of course). The "winner takes it all" speech perfectly represents the core of Saul Goodman. The reinstatement hearing is yet another brilliant scene where you can't tell if Jimmy's being truthful or not. And that final scene is so insane, particularly with the way Jimmy suddenly goes against what he said about making the name McGill proud by changing his name. And that final shot where the camera moves away from Kim is one of the best shots in the show; it represents how Jimmy's becoming so distant from what he once was and Kim is being left behind.
    Amazing video, man. As always you point out things which no one else has pointed out before. Waiting an extra week for this was worth it for a 75 minute long video. I also cannot wait for your Doctor Who reactions.

    I love the deep analysis of every episode, this one included. HOWEVER I think there's a large oversight really skewing your view of this episode in particular: We know for a fact that Mike absolutely has killed before. The cops in Philadelphia. (Furthermore, it's strongly implied in an earlier conversation between Mike and the arms dealer that he fought in Vietnam, he said that the wooden stock on a sniper rifle he was very familiar with "warped like hell from humidity and they still sent them to a jungle" or something along those lines. But that's a much more obscure detail and a lot less relevant.)

    • @TylerAlexander
      @TylerAlexander  4 месяца назад +3

      Okay so there's been some misinterpretation here. When I say 'first kill' I mean first kill as 'Breaking Bad Mike'. I reference in the video that he doesn't want to kill because of his trauma; the trauma I'm talking about is Vietnam and him having killed previously. That's why he doesn't want to pick up a gun and kill now and WHY this is such a big deal.
      This is his first kill in service to Gus and his first since he said he would not kill, and when I say first kill it's to signify the symbolic sense of his first kill on this new path that throws him into the life we know he gets to.

    • @TylerAlexander

      You're right in that it subtly indicates Gus' descent into darkness. I think if he'd have been angry at Mike more so it would have indicated he DID appreciate the irony of the situation and it bothered him, and he blamed Mike for putting him in that position.
      Alternately, perhaps the controlled anger I saw in this episode from Gus isn't actually directed at Mike, and more so towards the situation because he DOES appreciate the irony and he doesn't like it? But he can't enact his own revenge if he doesn't do what he needs to do in this episode. That would make sense as to why he didn't take out his anger on Mike, because it wasn't actually aimed so much at Mike.
      There are a few interpretations of his behaviour this ep, and I think it's fair to argue Gus either does or doesn't appreciate the irony of the situation. I quite like the idea that that's where his anger this episode was directed towards and that's why it never manifested itself in a way that was directed at Mike. Gus' behaviour in being kind to Mike at the end also supports this. The anger was never for Mike, it was for the acts Gus had to take that unfortunately took him closer in character to Hector.

    Was Gus’s “Are you sure?” a kindness for Mike or a question of, “Are you actually going to do it?” Cause it could be either or even both since he knows how much Mike wants him to be forgiven.

    What you said about Bob going into that act as if he was being 100% honest to make Jimmy seem sincere even to the audience reminds me of how Bryan acted in End Times as if Walt was truly innocent. I believe in that scenario Bryan wasnt given the script so truly did believe himself that Walt was innocent at the time aswell however its a very interesting thought imo.

    fantastic reaction/analysis, loved seeing your unfolding theories throughout. never even considered that they might’ve rewritten the letter, tho ofc i wouldn’t put it past them in the slightest. those final few minutes are such a whirlwind, unlike you i was completely suckered by jimmy’s speech, along for the ride thinking he’d finally broken down, and then there was the shock and horror alongside kim’s at the realization he was playing us all, and finally the slam of ‘sa’ll good, man.’ i’ve probably watched it a hundred times trying to get a sense of the beat and the timing of that final scene, what makes it hit so phenomenally the way it does. and that’s ofc not even to mention mike’s side of the ep

      I think some of what you feel (I felt it too) is that the pace in that last scene is really fast. Jimmy is also talking really fast, the energy is high, as well as the scene previously being a very long, drawn out solo monologue, with quite sombre energy.
      All of this together and those two scenes juxtaposed pace wise really just gives the impression of speed at the end, and when you have big revelations in there as well in that he WAS lying, he fooled Kim (her face), plus the last line and how much weight that holds; all of this comes together I think in giving you the feeling you got. It acts as quick *tap-tap-tap* sucker punches and then the episode ends. Bang. Done. It's really effective.

      There was a fan theory that Kim wrote that letter in the first place (that she threw away the actual letter Howard handed over to her) and that the reason she cries when Jimmy first reads it is because she was upset that he wasn't moved by her prose. It was such a ridiculous theory that the writers came out and debunked it.

    Do we really need your input after like every single line?

    • @TylerAlexander
      @TylerAlexander  Месяц назад +1

      I don't have input after every single line. I think you're misunderstanding how editing works. I edit the video so that when I DO comment, I show the clip and then my comment. Otherwise you're just watching the show, not a commentary.
      Feel free to compare the actual episode to my video to see how many lines I don't comment after. Funnily enough, those don't make the cut in a commentary vid 😂

    I think the girl did get the big picture jist of what Jimmy was trying to tell her. I'm not sure what her personal set of moral principles, which at her age are still forming, will do with the info though. That could have been a life path altering conversation or maybe she has forgotten about it in 6 mnths.

    I don't think mike really had a choice in that exact moment he was on the hills with werner, as gus would require a body to dispose of as proof and to tie up loose ends. it was the choices he made before this led to this somewhat inescapable moment

    • @TylerAlexander
      @TylerAlexander  4 месяца назад +1

      Yeah but he could have feasibly said 'get in the car' and gone lone ranger, is what I mean. North America is huuuge, he could've gone cross country. He knew where Gus had men, which airports were covered. Gus is powerful but not all powerful. With his extensive knowledge/skills, Mike has it in him to do that and make a good go of getting away and saving Werner, if not himself.
      He wouldn't be able to come back probably, he'd be leaving behind his family, but it would be the selfless thing to do. It's the way to save Werner and he COULD do that. It's well within the realm of possibility.
      I'm not saying he should've done this, I'm not saying it's the best option, but it's certainly something he could have done. He took the easy, selfish way out here, rather than take the hard path that might have saved Werner. He knew he could've done that and he chose not to.

      @@TylerAlexander yeah objectively there was a way to save werner, but mike believed himself to be too far gone to be able to help him I believe, and he decided to personally take werner out as a punishment for making the situation reach this point. it is selfish, but not in the way you say I guess

      @@libra_v3 I said it in the video exactly the way you just said it 🤣 'objectively there was a way to save Werner'. That's it, that's my entire point. There's a pause he does when Werner asks him if it's the only way and that is the subtext. I was neutrally commenting on it by pointing it out. That's it.
      I'm not arguing with you or anything but you are picking apart a point that you literally just said you agree with 🤷‍♂️

      @@TylerAlexander yeah it's just the word "selfish" that irrationally triggered me, it's not even a bad word but it's often used in a negative context and I have an urge to defend these characters even when they're at their morally lowest lol no biggies hopefully

      @TylerAlexander  4 месяца назад +1

      @@libra_v3 no it's cool. I understand the connotations, it's why I made a big thing of trying to be like 'I don't mean it in a bad way' 😂 I think selfishness is good in a lot of ways too. In this case it probably saved Mike tbh.
