Turbine whine on start up always makes me smile. I love the chally2 tank as I'm Scottish, but the abrams with the Honeywell turbine was a great idea. They're actually really efficient and can run on anything really. 😅
You can get a jet engine retrofitted for a LS4 for about 30000 euros. Gives up to 2 m/s. Some pros and cons to jet. Pro, less drag when deployed, good power to weight ratio, Cons. Noisy, start up time, fuel consumption. The temperature is extremely hot at exit but dissipates rapidly.
Granted, I don't know much about gliders, but that's almost without a doubt a Jetcat turbine. Their most powerful of which costs 4,000 Euros. I'm not quite sure how 30,000 Euros is justified for a modification like that. They have a time-before-overhaul of just 25 hours too. Surely a small petrol engine and prop that popped out would be a more practical alternative?
@@karlfriedrich7758 the turbine is just a small part of the cost. There is a significant cost in the fabrication and installation of the armature that holds and deploys the engine, the trap door in the fuselage that opens and closes, the control system to deploy and retract the engine, the fuel system installation and plumbing, the electronics to control it all... the parts are not large but are CNC machined alloys and then some significant work in composites (carbon fiber) to fix the turbine armature to the fuselage and fabricate the trap door. 30K euros is probably a bargain, the technicians who do this work are not becoming rich.
LOL, just checked the AMT website. Yeah, its 31,000 Euros just for the Nike turbine alone. So if you are doing a retrofit installation on a glider add another 30 to 40 thousand Euro for the installation cost of all the things I mentioned in my previous comment.
This weirdly gives you a sense of scale, if this tiny little thing is powerful enough to make this possible, it just makes something like a GE9X look even more insane. This is so cool.
@@KB4QAA If you've seen the "I bought a plane and flew across the country" video here on youtube, at one point he's having trouble in Arizona because his aircraft is too hot for his phone to even work, and he's using the phone for navigation.
Not a hot start. The combustion chamber and engine is so small, during start all of the combustion isn't complete until there is enough airflow. Lazy yellow flames are okay, hot torch like flames are baaaad.
Would an airplane like this be a good choice for a fuel efficient 1-2 hour powered turbine cruiser or is it something that you fly to find thermals/lift and then turn off the turbine and soar?
it is assumed that if they use a towing vehicle (even just to break the inertia with an impulse by towing device, winch or even car etc) it would save energy for a greater range and distance
Nice but I can imagine that if the neighbors were complaining about the noise from tow planes now, this would make them take their pitch forks and head out to the airport. As a sustainer engine though, it is pretty unbeatable especially because of its low drag. The problems with current sustainer engines is by the time you need it, (especially on competitions where you will wait until the last moment) you'd better be in a final over a field because the drag is taking you down fast. If the engine does not start, you will have to land right there. This would give you more time and less risks even if it does not start. I can imagine maintenance would be great as well. Unplug the engine, send it out for maintenance, hook it back up and you are good to go.
Due to the size of this engine, even at full power it is going to make a lot less noise than any propeller aircraft. Especially at much higher frequency, which doesn't travel very far.
A jet gives you higher cruising speed but you don't need this on a glider. On a glider you wish high starting thrust this works better with a propeller.
The power in turbine in that size.. goddam!! Imagine if you put 4 of those 😂 i guess the pilot would shit himself 😂 But still, that size compared to output thrust is just..amazing
The turbine is retractable to the fuselage. You can already buy gliders which include from the factory a Jetengine. Saw this at the Aero Friedrichshafen, 2019
I believe the best solution is the gliders with the electric pop-up boom propeller. It's not that this jet engine or any gas engine doesn't work, the problem is that it takes so long for it to build power and I feel the electric motor is much more reliable.
I agree and yours seems to be the only comment on that. Not immediately but over time, it will cause fatigue on that tail. There's a REASON top mounted jets on other aircraft have a V-Tail.
With an engine this size, at full power. You can stick your hand in the jet blast half way to the vertical stab and its not much worse than a heater. The air mixes and dilutes the temperature surprisingly fast.
I'm guessing the gross weight of this sailplane is probably around 600 lbs. That this tiny jet engine barely bigger than a football can launch this plane makes me think of their power to weight ratio as akin to a mythological animal.
I have seen the starter on them jets get stuck and not release the clutch and then jet started and sucked in the debris from the starter that is at the front of the engine. I wouldn't want to trust it.
Is this custom made? The original silent 2, is only electro, you must certify the jet engine first in order so fly it? What is the takeoff distance from grass? Where can i buy one exactly like yours with a jet engine?
These self propelled gliders are just about the coolest thing there is, along with the Sunseeker solar-powered glider.
"self-propelled gliders" AKA "planes". lol
They need fuel to power that engine .. Are there even gliders with fuel tank designed in them? Doesn't that decrease their glide ratio?

Thrust is force. Power is force times velocity.

Typically you leave them out to cool them before retracting.
As I recall, they said that there is a minimum cool down time of 1.5 minutes at cruise.
