One of the first to build a heavy metal tone out of the raw materials available at the time. Cranked up amps, down tuned guitars with overwound pickups and riffs that relied on the low end of the instrument. He's a blue print of how it's done and has never been matched to my estimation.
8:22 till end black sabbath heavy f'n metal rules forever! the way Ton transitions into the beginning riff of into the void is beyond incredible this solo from live at last and Ton's solo from Live Evil on song heaven and hell are perhaps the greatest live lead guitar solos ever thank you
I can't believe how much awesome and amazing is this versión. I think this is the first time i heard a Jam from Black Sabbath and i am a fan since 1999
It was either late 1998 or early '99 for me. Friend of mine in 8th grade had the one CD burner in school, and I got him to make me a copy of We Sold Our Souls. Been a Sabbath fan ever since.
They jammed a fair amount in the 70s. Idk about the 80s because I don't listen to Sabbath live shows without Ozzy but they stoppped doing jams by the time Ozzy came back.
FINALLY someone uploaded this, i had the cd this was on but i lost it and now its back FUCKING AWESOME, this is the version of the song that made me love Black Sabbath as much as i do.
My alltime fave Sabbath tune..Nobody...NOBODY can follow Black Sabbath. Not in 1973..........Not when I caught 'em in'99........Not Jan 7th 2012.......Nobody can follow Sabbath.......
They still are man, but wasn't so much in earth. Earth were an out and out blues band, but they turned to jazz and changed their name to something 'more exciting' after watching King Crimson live at Hyde Park in 1969
That is very correct Abraham and that is why you get all the tasty chords and funky breaks not normally found in hard rock/metal. Were they called Earth? Or Spirit? I'm not sure but I have seen a couple minutes of early footage where they are playing straight blues and Ozzy is blowin harmonica. These guys have always rocked. The Wizard shows alot of influences on the band
Despite my addiction to just about every heavy song this group ever played, it is that jazz-blues solo that really hits me. I'd of really liked to kick back and listen these guys just jam when they were called Earth.
Then you wouldn't like ANY of Iommi's live solos. All he does is incorporate blues and jazz into them and still does it now. Although I wouldn't even say Sabbath goes onto "forays of blues jamming". If you listen to real blues and Sabbath jamming it's pretty different. It's not Albert King, Muddy Waters, or even Peter Green. It's something quite different.

I'm new to your channel and I dig it! Always been a live fan.
Sam. I give your comment a thumbs down for the Page remark. Completely unnecessary, given their styles are poles apart. In case you weren’t aware, Iommi was into Django and other jazz players. If you had any idea at all, you would have noticed it in this clip. Maybe you need to grow up?
@@mortyprendergast1950 Zeppelin, Sabbath and Purple are always grouped together for a reason. They grew up in the same era and all started out with similar, blues-rock music (I don't know much about Deep Purple but the other two were definitely very similar at first, and even later on) Iommi was into Django, but also has cited Chuck Berry and many other blues players has his influence.
Morty Prendergast Yeah well I know a lot more than you think- Page wasted his talents mimicking prior blues greats that he didn’t even give full credit for- and I get why sorta- he was a session musician from 63-67 until he joined the Yardbirds... he then had the greatest seven year span from October 1968 to about 1975. He then proceeded to wither away from the music scene. I’ve seen him live- I know in person. How he had his up nights when the heroin was flowing and when he had terrible crap can’t play shit nights. Don’t tell me Idon’t know- I know more about Iommi too- a lot more. He never copied any songs to make it and then he played for 50 years with missing finger tips and he made I think the greatest FUCK you album to all bands regaining the Title of greatest band ever- 13 - their last album. Page is a shell if himself- Iommi can still play a tour to this day- Cancer and all! Page - was good at playing long solos based all off the blues roots- he was good at making some really nice grooves as a complement to other artists prior arrangements- please don’t mistake copying like Page did - is original and great....
I LOVE that Jazz jam they go into and also when they get into Sometimes I'm Happy!! And loving Sabbath but hating blues jams? Somehow I doubt that you actually like Sabbath
Can't really be wrong picking either one, but I'm going to say Sabbra Cadabra from California Jam. It might just be because of how the guitar sounds on that recording as opposed to this one, plus I like Sabbra Cadabra's reprise more than the reprise of Wicked World. That riff Iommi plays after Orchid in the extended version of Sabbra Cadabra might be the sickest, heaviest riff to appear on tape. Iommi must have liked it too, because the same riff crept up in his solos years after it's creation.
Awesome same here!! The tone iommi had at cal jam is my all time favorite perfect guitar sound it sounds like the amps are about to explode but iommi's demonic blues powers kept them going haha
Holy fuck never knew they had live sets like this. I only ever saw them in the early 2000s at Ozzfest and let's just say they didn't quite rock like this, lol.
If you lost the CD, you should just buy "Past Lives", the whole first disc of "Past Lives" is a remastered "Live at Last". That said, I hate the messed up second disc where they pulled songs from Paris '70 and Asbury Park '75 and presented it as one disc. I hate when record companies make what are essentially compilation CDs from live shows. The spirit of the original shows are lost.
No it's not. This was how it's played. The beginning is probably actually faster than the album, while the main riff is a hair slower...intentionally. Sabbath milked this song for all it was worth from 1970-73.
@MrKirkenstein For someone who's "dug Sabbath since the first album", you haven't really listened to them much have you... I mean, half the first album is a blues jam... "Warning"? Or listen to any concert Black Sabbath ever played...every single one has a long solo/jam in it. Perhaps you should stay away from...well from whatever is making you stupid...
I could never understand why Tony had that bad feedback problem for years on end. Being a guitar player myself for 30 years, it has to come down to a bad "guitar tech", period. If he(the G. Tech) knew what he was doing, that should have be cleared up quickly, and Tony should never of had to go on stage year after year and endure that.
You have to realize Tony was running a heavily modified and highly unique rig at this time; the high feedback was largely in part due to the treble boosters. In my opinion the feedback is awesome! No one had a rig run down like Tony at this point in history.
another song with a message about the wicked war and politics.the devil pulls no punches as BLACK SABBATH had an inside look of the faith of the free world.black sabbath had meet with ALISTER CROWLEY the head witch of ENGLAND.
.... where that flavor brutally ends at 8:20 and descends into heavy madness .... I love Sabbath don't get me wrong. Their rock music was clearly innovative. It , however , does not display their musical talents with strong roots in jazz. Bill Ward , in this context , was a phenomenal drummer
Tony is the definition of the ideal guitarist, heavy riffs, bluesy solos and beefy tone

How relaxed because They are at the Professional Level with their Collective Groovin' !
Just goes to show you there's a lot more to Iommi than just amazing hard hitting riffs, I love this Jazzy/Bluesy jam, Tony TRUELY is a master
and bills drumming is cool. he gives it the jazz and boogie
Dude gets his fingertips chopped off and can still roll out with this? F'N Amazing!
Better than anything then....better than anything now...
"They can put a man on the moon quite easy. While people here on earth are dyin' of old diseases." Frightening but true.
Geezer was an unbelievable lyricist
Bill Ward kicking azz as per usual !!!
you know what gives sabbath that groove, that underneath the leather and evil, lies a jazz soul!!! they are fucking smooth with the jams!

Jerry Garcia too, my 2 favs !! If you don't like Grateful Dead listen to playing in the band in the early 70s, say 8/27/72 and see what I mean.
Nobody. Period
Bill Ward never gets the credit he deserves.
AMEN
Tony Iommi is what all guitar players dream to be because he's the riff king 👑
I remember the first time I heard this
The chugging rhythm part sounds like what i can only imagine is a Birmingham Steel Mill. A lot of Torque in that sound.
Iommi is a fucking god that lighter blues part was so tasty my god perfect thanks 4 posting this!
jazz is awesome!
this song is amazing. Iommis solo is fucking awesome!

This is for the doubters who thought Iommi couldn't shred. Guy had to have been on acid during this.
No this is pure coke
Fucking EPIC!
Iommi at his best. Eat your heart out Page.

The only thing wicked about this song is that riff!
