If you compare him to Nadal, playing with left hand, he is much bigger talent than Nadal, has much softer hands, not to even talk about his volley abillities, and serve that was even than better than Nadal's nowdays. But unfortunatelly, the whole game isn't in tallent, and that's the reason Nadal is, and will be remembered as a much bigger player than Rios was.

Rios was like a very artistic player. However, he lacked the pure beast game that someone like a Sampras/Safin could rely on every match. That is what Nadal has. The big power and spin on the forehand, ability to grind like Muster, and cheat code passing shots. The real meat of the Rios game was speed and foot work. The rest was for highlights.

But Rafa has won the French four times in a row, he has won Wimbledon, he has won Indian Wells, he has won The Canada Open, he has been brilliant in Davis Cup and he is the most fit, durable guy around. @viktorobrol rios' competition sucks compared to that of nadal's. rios simply wouldn't be able to pull off the crafty, deft shots with success like he can against the slower, less powerful players of 12 yrs ago. i'd love to hear from anyone here if they think rios' serve is better than nadal's serve today. nadal's first serve is faster, better placed, generates much more spin and slice and is varied far better than rios' first serve. second serve prowess isn't even close to nadal's second serve

But it is usual thing, that talented players are often weaker and lower ranked players than some other players. Globally, Nadal is better player and always will be remembered as a better player than Rios is, but that doesn't necessary mean he is more talented than Rios, or Nalbandian, or some other player. Much more factors describes you as a big player, not just talent.

Yes, it was better. I didn't say that Rios is better player than Nadal, and I also think Nadal would beat Rios today, and Rios wouldn't handle Nadal's pace and rhythm. But Rios serve was more consistent and first serve was flatter and faster than Nadal's. Secondly, Rios' halfvolleyed better than Nadal, had much better dropshots on backhand side, but mentally he is way of Nadal's league. And his approach to match is horrable. But I still think he is bigger talent than Nadal.
Courier's forehand had lost a good bit of it's explosive power at this time. But give Rios credit for completely demolishing a competitor like Courier. Sure Courier was past his prime, but it's not like he was a 50 yr old man. Maybe the old Courier could have overpowered Rios, maybe not. But that would have been Courier's only chance to beat Rios. Overpower him. But that's hard to do over 3 or 5 sets.
ptothej100 JC was only 27, and I don't think his game had declined, I think it was more of everyone else 1) getting better, 2) figuring him out, and 3) no longer being intimidated by him. Also, I think Rios loved the consistent hard pace that Courier and Agassi gave him - brought out his best.

But Rafa has won the French four times in a row, he has won Wimbledon, he has won Indian Wells, he has won The Canada Open, he has been brilliant in Davis Cup and he is the most fit, durable guy around. Nadal should be considered as one as well because he's playing with his non-dominant hand and seems to be improving technically every single year. If Rios had all those shots better than Nadal... @viktorobrol rios' competition sucks compared to that of nadal's. rios simply wouldn't be able to pull off the crafty, deft shots with success like he can against the slower, less powerful players of 12 yrs ago.
i'd love to hear from anyone here if they think rios' serve is better than nadal's serve today. nadal's first serve is faster, better placed, generates much more spin and slice and is varied far better than rios' first serve. second serve prowess isn't even close to nadal's second serve
with much more spin, faster runner than Rios, better wristmaking shots abilities when defending, better mental thinking and playing through whole mach, more consistent play from back of the court...What you wanna else me to say??

@viktorobrol Let mi say, that doesn't mean Rios is better than Nadal, it would be stupid to say, but surely bigger talent. But it is usual thing, that talented players are often weaker and lower ranked players than some other players. Globally, Nadal is better player and always will be remembered as a better player than Rios is, but that doesn't necessary mean he is more talented than Rios, or Nalbandian, or some other player. Much more factors describes you as a big player, not just talent.

Yes, it was better. I didn't say that Rios is better player than Nadal, and I also think Nadal would beat Rios today, and Rios wouldn't handle Nadal's pace and rhythm. But Rios serve was more consistent and first serve was flatter and faster than Nadal's. Secondly, Rios' halfvolleyed better than Nadal, had much better dropshots on backhand side, but mentally he is way of Nadal's league. And his approach to match is horrable. But I still think he is bigger talent than Nadal.
Courier's forehand had lost a good bit of it's explosive power at this time. But give Rios credit for completely demolishing a competitor like Courier. Sure Courier was past his prime, but it's not like he was a 50 yr old man. Maybe the old Courier could have overpowered Rios, maybe not. But that would have been Courier's only chance to beat Rios. Overpower him. But that's hard to do over 3 or 5 sets.
ptothej100 JC was only 27, and I don't think his game had declined, I think it was more of everyone else 1) getting better, 2) figuring him out, and 3) no longer being intimidated by him. Also, I think Rios loved the consistent hard pace that Courier and Agassi gave him - brought out his best.
ptothej100 I was surprised at how short some of JC's shots were landing. Yes, hit hard, but near the service line. I am not a student of JC - were his shots always this short?
+J plus his backhand seemed like a liability that opponents exploited in his later years.
