My great-grandmother rebuilt her hotel in San Francisco after her original hotel burnt down in the 1906 earthquake. She built it out of brick to prevent a future fire from burning it down. In the 80s, we had to retrofit it to protect it from a future large earthquake, as did many other building owners in San Francisco. San Francisco has tough earthquake codes that have to be followed. The 89 earthquake destroyed those buildings that were on earth that could 'liquefy ', something that contributed to the destruction of many of the buildings in Turkey. Our hotel was built on bedrock.
