Hi Aidan. Very nice initial review. I did notice a couple of other not-quite-perfect areas of paintwork, but you have got to grab these models when you can. I look forward to seeing a video of the tilting mechanism in action on this model.
Hi Paul. Thanks you. Just an initial look at it really as there is not a lot can be done without the end units. The tilt action is very basic however quite effective. I didn't catch it on camera as I was watching it and running it in more than anything else. Thanks for watching and getting in touch. Cheers
Great video Aidan got one of the older APT sets myself and it is a great model, plastic pantographs in this day and age are unacceptable in my opinion, they should all be metal regardless of whether they are to scale or not, wish hornby had done extra coaches for the older sets because they would sell really well, only option for me is to get some that are 3D printed but then would have to paint them.
Hi David. I always wanted one of those older sets after I saw that one set at the model shop when I was younger. I agree with you on the additional coaches for the old set. I have seen some amazing custom full rakes made by others by cannibalising broken sets. One thing which I think Hornby may have missed out on if the tooling was still available is reintroducing the old sets in the railroad range and possibly making additional coaches available. Yes I understand that suitable replacement for the old ring field motor would have to be developed but I do think that could be a winner. What do you think David?
@@AidansRailways could probably be a good idea to have an APT in the railroad range but at the same time how much would a 5 car set be priced at these days, I also think the original tooling got destroyed years ago so it is very unlikely that additional coaches could be made.
I think so many toolings have been lost or destroyed over recent years. It would be nice to think if they survived that the possibility was there. If I had to take a wild guess at a price for a set as a train set track etc. I think we would be looking at least 250. Just a guess but working off the current sets available with loco and say three coaches etc. Then add the extra coach. Still a lot but definitely not as much as the main range. It's similar to the Hitachi rapier. I could not warrant buying main range however I got the blue rapier set and purchased the extra railroad coaches. Might not have all the detail but definitely more affordable. I would love to know if they still have the tooling though.
Thank you very much! As a single unit it runs really nicely. The real test will be when the train packs arrive and we are able to see just how well they will run as full trains of up to 14 units. I have my concerns but I'm keeping an open mind. Thank you again Marco
First and foremost. Thank you for the review and the coverage of the extra power car. I think the APT does look promising and I might get one myself. Here is a like and I have subbed by the way. Keep up the great videos.
I think it will be the Packs that sell out. I don't see the Driving cars as being sold separately so I can see these being the irreplaceable things in the future. BTW, just to be a pedant, the pantograph was connected to the bogie so it didn't tilt with the rest of the body. The panto needed to stay in the correct position against the overhead line.
Hi. Absolutely , the pantograph should be connected to the bogie. I'm sure I checked in the video that it was. As this particular power car is meant for the five car set I do not believe that replacement power cars are available for the seven car set. In the situation that tragically something should happen to a power car for the seven car set I think using one of these ones as a doner for parts etc will be the only option. I am curious to see if hornby will produce more sets with alternate fleet numbers. I saw some pictures recently of the driving cars and I'm already having concerns the the quality of the nose area may not be what is expected. Hopefully the images I have seen are pre production examples. Thank you for watching and commenting. Cheers
Morning ben Hope you are well Not my thing but great review. I've heard nothing but bad things about this model. It will be interesting to see what Monday show Shows us. Plastic pantograph in this day and age is a big no up there with traction tyres Keep safe arp
Hi mate. There has so far been quite a bit of bad press with the apt. Almost like the present day mirroring the past with the real apt so to speak. As you know I try to find the best in most things and approach with a open mind. Yes I am a little disappointed with some paint print issues and as we have touched on the pantograph. The tilt mechanism is basic yet effective. The issue with the capacitors in the coaches is just insane. I really don't know how that was allowed to happen. I do have one thing that I would like to put out there to everyone though. The individual prices for individual items at the moment I think seems to reflect. A coach pack at say a hundred quid works out at less than the current price for main range coaches per coach RRP. In the same way that the power unit here seems to be priced at a similar price of a railroad diesel/electric loco. As I said to David in another comment I wonder if the tooling was still available would hornby introduce a railroad range apt from the older tooling? I know its not your era but thank you for commenting as always. Cheers mate
Hi, I have done the same as you,, I have the 7 coach pack on order, but have just received my 4 extra coach packs and a NDM. But I'm rather disappointed that I can clearly see the lighting capacitors in all the coaches and the plastic pantograph. My old Hornby APT came with a all metal pantograph !
Hi Dave. I too am a little disappointed about a few factors but I am glad that it is finally arriving if only in segments. I will most definitely have to get the garden finished for some summer running of the Apt in 2022. Cheers
It’s a great model but still a few near misses ,quality control still a bit moody, plastic pans and the open corridor and capacitor showing ,I have the original with its pantograph I’m very happy with it at the moment I’m not going to invest in this one,you compare the rapido APT-E it should of been more like that to be honest ,great channel and I’ve subscribed all the best .
Hi. Thank you for watching and commenting. I agree it is not quite what I was expecting to see after the wait. A number of things that could of been better. The rapido apt-e is as you say what it should have been more like quality wise. Once again, thank you
@@bennickss oh I agree. If I’d had been £90 for a single coach then I would definitely not have been purchasing it. At the moment a coach pack pair of coaches works out at a similar price to RRP for main range coaches and the power units at a similar price to that of a railroad range diesel electric RRP

Great video, I’m using my apt power car with the original 80’s carriages
Hi David Very cool! Is there much of a difference with the paintwork between the old and new or is it a good match?
hi aidan. oh very nice indeed. thanks for the look .cheers tom.
Hi Tom. It has some flaws but I am happy it is finally arriving now. Cheers

Thank you Miguel
Did you get the 2023 APT that Hornby said they upgraded?

I must say that £90 for a SINGLE coach is just disgusting and unacceptable
The coaches come in pairs. This is the driving unit. Effectively this is the locomotive. I'm assuming you mean this item?
