Best Things to do in Taipei - Overnight City Guide

- I have always loved travelling.
I was lucky enough that from a young age, my parents took us all over the place, instilling in us a sense of larger spaces and broadened horizons. As I grew up, I became more independent in my travels and tried to figure out ways to do it more. From learning Spanish in Salamanca to purposefully getting 6 month summer jobs in places I wanted to explore further.
I became accustomed to getting lost and just wondering the streets, figuring out where would be the next good meal or when I would stumble onto some secret only locals whispered about. Getting lost was second nature back then. The only resources we had were over-read guide books that by the time you reached their recommendations, the waiters would push their best sellers down your throats.
So we had to resort to friend recommendations, what blog resources were up on the internet, guide books, conversations with strangers and your hotel concierge. Nowadays in our hyper connected world, everyone is an expert and there are so many sites that claim that this restaurants, trumps this bar, which is passé and now is considered touristy by pretty much everyone. Honestly, for me, good is good, so that’s what I base myself on.
For every family or friend trip we would take, I became the defacto research guide. Skimming through websites in English and in the language of destination, guide books, personal blogs, Instagram hashtags, geotags and anything else social media would allow me to delve into. Finally, being able to create a snap shot of the city, its districts and where to eat, sleep, drink, party or learn about the culture.
This is what Overnight is about.
For all of the information of the video, a map of the city and our Overnight guide.

im hooked. its like watching tv with no commercials
I went to Taiwan in the summer and it was so much fun. The food was amazing, people were so friendly, the night markets were fun and don’t even get me started on the view
Dear Sophie, you have to come to Taiwan again. It's a fabulous island
"Taxi is the best... 1200..." and I'm like NOOOOO dude! Taiwan MRT is so efficient at only a fraction of that cost. lol smh
Hahahaha difficult taxi be the best option because normally it’s expensive. It’s also very common airport have at least a bus to go to city centre
I have to agree that Taipei having really nice ppl. on my very 1st trip there. I was shopping at a shoe store and was looking to find a nail salon but didn't know my way around. the saleswoman personally walked me to the salon several blocks away. she said it was easier to walk me there than try to explain... it was such a great gesture! on top of everything I didn't purchase anything from her store and she still helped me out! if you get a chance, go to Taipei! it's wonderful there...
This is exactly how a quality travel video is made!
I went to Taipei a couple weeks ago and went to some of the places on this video. Big thumbs up to you. I really appreciate the great video. It was my 2nd time visiting Taiwan and it was amazing! I hope to return back again one day.
I don’t know but I’m having a hard time now looking for travel vlogs that i like. This is because Erwann sets the bar so high when it comes to this. I love how Erwann takes us to places not just thru videos and amazing cinematography but also because of his brilliant narratives. So please, if you’ll read this, please do more of travel vlogs! Haha. I’ve been watching your travel escapades many times.
as a guy born in Taipei and living here for 23 years... this is a great video!!
As a proud Taiwanese growing up in Vancouver and the Bay Area, I gotta say Taipei is the one of the best city on earth especially for exploring and traveling
FINALLY. A travel show! I've always pegged you to be a perfect travel show host, especially since traveling consists of trying out the food to really understand the culture. Congratulations on this new project!
+Alexis Valenzona i know long time coming. more to come!
you are an inspiration *blush*
Alexis Vee ..,p
Erwan Heussaff hey buddy @4:05 it's actually Songshan District. People always gets the two districts confused
Don't take a taxi into town; take the bus. It brings you to the MRT, which then can take you anywhere.
Problem is that unless you can read Chinese, taking the bus is not very tourist friendly.
Chris Nelson The buses are horrible in Taiwan. All the drivers drive like maniacs. I prefer taxis, cuz I like it when the taxi drivers turn up the air conditioning to full blast. Lol
The bad bus drivers are usually the tour bus drivers they hire for Chinese tour groups. The tour companies try to stretch every dime for their own profit, and scrape these bad drivers, who they pay peanuts, from the bottom of the driver barrel. Taxi drivers in Taiwan are maniacs too.
The airport buses only go to a few stops. In any case, next week, the new metro link should be opening.
Yeah when I heard this in the video I was like "wtf? are you crazy?"
This is a potent format you got here, all massive and awesome content in less than 20 minutes. Writing is top notch. I've never commented this much. I'm just super impressed.
This is great! So glad I saw your page on Facebook and decided to check your videos out! Can't wait for what you'll be having next! 😃
Beautiful video, reminds me of my childhood growing up in Taipei, Taiwan. Awesome job and welcome to Taiwan!
Pei-Lun Kao Good
Taiwanese are friendly, well mannered and helpful people ,the complete opposite of people from Hong Kong.
Can't agree more
apparently not that well-mannered when it comes to stereotyping a large number of people :X
He is absolutley right on the money Hong Kong while I love the city people aint excatly friendly.
Taipei on the other hand is amazing people actually care about each other and are very helpful.
That's harsh but one good thing is it's mandarin rather than cantonese. Good luck learning cantonese as a native english speaker in 1 million years
@jason dont be mad because it is the truth!
"Taxi is the best way to get around" ... Well Taipei has the most efficient public transportation in the world so maybe not
CutieMoli I do think Hong Kong has it though - but Taipei might be good as well
This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. This entire trip was sponsored. Can't expect much from this fraud.
no, that Tokyo. Please get your shit straight
I think Tokyo might be the most convenient city in the world XD
@@mp-sv2cp No way, Tokyo system is messed up, old and outdated.
Loved watching this. So pleasurable following you around Taipei
Thank you for coming up with this series! I really enjoyed this first episode and looking forward to the next ones. I do hope that the next episodes are a bit longer though.. bitin!
To clarify, not bitin in a negative way. But bitin cause I wanna watch more!
+Krystele Uy no worries, thank you so much
You were able to capture the heart of Taiwan! I will be visiting the city by the end of this month and I'll for sure check-out the places and foods you featured here. Hope to see more of your travel vlogs!
Hi Erwan Heussaff, thank you for making an awesome vlog about Taipei, Taiwan. I miss Taiwan and I'm glad I found your video.
Just watched your video. Soon off to Taipei for my studies and I. Can't. Wait !!!
Just cannot beat the food in Taipei in terms of variety, selection and originality. Oh yeah, it tastes damn good too !
I really enjoyed watching. Thank you for this great lively and informative video. Have more support to heading to Taiwan!
I also learnt Spanish in Salamanca! Good job and keep up the good work! Look forward to seeing more Overnight episodes soon :)
Taiwan is totally awesome country and traveled through all taiwan for 21 days ! taiwan has best stinkiy tofu ! the best night food markets and i eat my way all them through of them in all the cities ! yummy the best ! thank you taiwan
Alex Swage sorry Taiwan is not a country
@@siyuanyang9461, only you Chinese people say that. Everyone else in the world knows that Chinese people need to get a visa to visit Taiwan but citizens from western country can enter Taiwan without a visa and the reciprocal is true. That makes Taiwan a western country.
It's in every sense a country except where Beijing needs to use its economic influence to coerce international entities and organizations not to recognize it separately. Taiwan has different political, economic, banking, education systems; nothing internal is controlled by mainland China. Taiwan can't control what international entities and other countries' official foreign policy dictates, that's their own free will, just as people in Taiwan have their own free will.
@@siyuanyang9461 it's a beautiful, free Island Nation...💓 Taiwan!!
Nice video about Taipei, very nicely done (presentation, mood, editing all very professional)!! I've been to Taipei once, will be back again next year. Will try your recommendations. :)
Visiting Taipei in a few days and OF COURSE I had to watch this!!!
I would say, I love your shows and I'm looking forward for the next next ep.!!
Love your videos! I am such a fan. You really hit all the great spots in Taiwan!
thank you for this! my kids and i will have a layover in taipei and this will be a great help! thanks again
Truly the heart of Aisa! We love Taiwan in all forms! See our vlog about our travel there last Feb 2020! Wanna go back! 🥰🥰🥰
I hope you’ll make more Overnight travel videos. I always look back to your videos for travel guide ❤

OMYGOSH. PERFECT! Love the show's format! Complete with information and really entertaining to watch as well! I can't wait for the other EPs!
+Zymon B. they will get better :)
Born and raised in Taipei. I enjoyed your video. MRT Gongguan to Guting, close to two universities, is a nice area to visit. Many restaurant, local food and caffe for students, many bookstores, two night markets. The two universities can be actually tracked back to Japanese colony and are worth checking, many locals take a walk in the campus just like parks. Beitou is also a nice foothill area with hot spring resorts. Lungshan temple is in an area where Taipei first flourished with port city. it's now relative old and I will not hang out that area alone into small alleys at night.
I live in Taipei for almost 27 years, every now and then my local friend will still take me to explore some new place. 36 hours is definitely not enough. The National Palace museum and National Museum will also be on top of art lovers' list. Not to mention that there are more places to explore outside Taipei.
You made me feel like "i literally need to go to Taipei, or else i'll miss half of my life experience! " LOL.
Nice video! I agree with the bartender - I was in Taiwan from 2006 to 2009 for school, and I really didn't experience any kind of hip/boutique culture, but there has been a huge boom in it all, I feel starting from the last time I was there, which was 2011-2012. I didn't expect it at all, and It actually took me a while to open my eyes up to how much there is now, in terms of small cocktail/whisky bars, organic food, boutique clothing shops, music venues, artisanal coffee shops... you know, "hip" stuff.
Regarding transportation, I do have to say that Taxi would be my last option when travelling from the airport. For me, best is the high-speed rail. There are buses from the airport to the rail station, which cost around $1.50 US, leave often and take around 10 minutes, and then the rail costs around 8 dollars and gets your there in 20 minutes. Although you have to take the bus from the port to the rail station, and then you have to wait for your train (if you don't time it well), I think in total it takes you less time than a taxi, and costs you less. Also, you don't have to sit in a cramped/smelly taxi - the high-speed rail is NICE.
We will go to Taipei for 4 days in July 2016. Thanks for the info. You cramped it in 36 hours. I think we an take time to do all in 3-4 days of relaxing time. I love your channel..
Wow! Congratulations. 😊 I can't wait for the next episodes. 🎉
+Rona Delos Santos thank you!
Awesome video with both energetic and relaxing vibe! Thx
You could tell Erwan's really a foodie! He knows his stuff! I love the editing of this vid and the chill vibe. Thanks as well for the shout outs of the must visits / must eats --will definitely check those out soon!
Looooove the work he does, but just wish he’d smile and be more enthusiastic lol it would make this 10x better
True. His praise is always lukewarm.
Where did this rumor come from, everyone knows Taiwan has good food...
This is TRUE. Taiwan is a food paradise.
what the fuck are you guys talking about? taiwanese food sucks! it has no flavor. Taiwanese people have really low standards for anything including what they eat and so they try to convince people that crap tastes good. Gullible people believe anything.
Adam D Are you serious? You obviously don't know food and how dare you say Taiwanese people have no standards. Idiot.
i didn't say no standards. I said low standards. and of course it's obvious, and a generalization. what specific taiwanese foods do you think taste good? maybe you've tried something I haven't. every food i've tried in taiwan is pretty bland and dissapointing except a few pricey Japanese and French restaurants i've been to in Taipei. How dare you be so sensitive ;)
Adam D, no offense but Taiwan is known to be food paradise in Asia. Are you from Asia? If not, you probably don't know Asian cuisine very well.
Really quite poor subtitles, but it's great to see Taiwan receiving this credit. It's a beautiful place!
Lin Dong Fang beef noodle soup probably THE Best in Taipei! Good catch! Be prepared to wait in line and place is a hole in the wall, but once you taste the noodles, all will be worth it !
I'll be there in April, wish me luck! Love your glasses 😘
a nice and helpful video for those who heading to Taipei ! will visit Taipei next month, hope to have a wonderful trip like you in this overnight city :)
I like your comment about the metro system not smelling bad compared to the ones in Europe. I've used the metro systems in Bangkok, Tokyo and Seoul too, also clean and no bad smell.
I can relate to your comment coz I live here in Germany.
Carlos Lunghard I agree, but still in cities like Berlin, Paris and London the metro system isn’t that bad. Some of the stations smell, but it not a big problem and you don’t have to take a taxi.
i agree! it's reaally fit for a travel channel! he's like the next anthony bourdain of the philippines.. haha
Love the way you edit and piece together your videos! Super dope. Love all of the food shots haha
It's been a while since I've been back to Taipei. I miss the night market foods :(
+Angel Wong's Kitchen Spring onion pancakes are my fav!
i am so glad i unexpectedly came across this channel. super quality content yass
Spent an entire day watching your videos. Love it. Take me next time. 😹😹😹
Love, love, love your shows. Please do more. Suggestions.....Penang, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Bali, and of course Tokyo. But you could do one in Honolulu as well.
+1 For Penang, my hometown yay

New in 2017:
Now you can choose MRT to travel between airport and Taipei
And you can also check in your luggage directly at MRT Taipei station.
Love your videos Erwan, awesome quality, great content, keep up the good work :)
Going Taipei soon, this is awesome information and good watch. Thanks man!
This was so helpful planning to visit Taipei this December.. Thanks :)
The intro reminds me of the movie, The Beach, but with a lighter vibe coz izz all abot zeee food! I love it. Maybe a video about your overnight travel essentials too? (ie, Google Map, Cash, A friend, the internet) basically your must-dos or must-haves.
Next time you're in Taipei, try looking for a restaurant called Fei Chien Wu or Hizen Ya(Japanese) in some unsuspecting alleyway somewhere in Zhongshan North Road. They serve the best grilled eel in town. Actually, it's the best grilled eel I've tasted ever. Line is always long, but worth getting into. Took me 2 days to look for it, but I'm glad I did. :)
Jann G. I love grilled eel and thanks for the info! I will go look for the restaurant when I’m there!
Missing Taipei after watching your show... Can't wait to go back next year! (hopefully!) Thanks for this and Keep it up! =)
He indeed introduced a lot of hip spots in Taipei, ranging from local food to exhibition space to seafooad restaurant to classy bars.
Looks great man! I'm also a filmmaker currently living in Guangzhou China but thinking about making the move to Taipei soon! I think you've got me convinced. Awesome stuff!
welcome
No VPN needed for Facebook and RUclips.
I graduated from film school in North America, if you have any question about moving to Taipei. Please feel free to contact me.
Ned Chu Thanks man! We actually decided to make the move! So I'll be living there September 1st
Great move! Amazing place with great convenience.

welcome to Taipei. Although it was almost 8 months ago, looked like you went to some hot spots, hope you had a great time in Taipei. looking forward seeing you again soon.
Excited for your next overnight in asia episode!
+eleni catli it will be great!
This is stunning, the way it's filmed :D
Awesome show! Inspires me to travel to and explore Taipei. I just hope that you have more airtime, clearly, 16 mins wasn't enough. Can't wait for the next episodes. 👍
+Marides Dacayanan we have enough for 40mins!!! but no one will watch a video that long haha
I can't wait to go there this summer to try all different kind of foods !!!!! It's really good video
Rewatching this in 2019 ♥️
Omg I'm missing taipei so much....... remember 2 years ago......😘
This is really awesome and this is in Taipei! But need a cup of tea with that pineapple cake!
Your production quality and format is top notch! Can't wait to see you make it on TV :)
Wow just right for my backpacking trip this coming july in taipei.... happy to to see this must on my list thanks for this video👌👌👌
WOOOO I LOVE THIS GUY, I wanna go to Taiwan this summer omfg
Love it!! Made me stop everything I'm doing to watch this.
+Jeune Fabrigas haha thank you
Take a bus from the airport, about 10 bucks, and take their subway system. It's the most simple system I've ever used and gets you close to most anywhere you need to be. I guess if you are really shooting for an 8 hour layover trip, maybe taxi isn't bad, but I get the impression most people really aren't watching this for that exact reason.
Erwan, these videos are GREAT! Can't wait to travel to more Asian countries and try some of your recommendations.
"Taipei is almost always set aside as a boring food destination that has little else to offer. We set off in an attempt to disprove this rumor."
*Spends almost all of the video on food*
Synthetase2 bro the food is amazing. I can’t believe people can think that.
He is a Chef and a foodie personality. That's why.
主持人和台灣人都是菲律賓人的後代,這樣讚美台灣,太客氣了
Awesome video. Thank you for sharing ❤️
I was in Taipei last month. It was beyond wonderful :D
16 buns is hilarious! Raohe is my fav night market in Taiwan and the Hujiao Bing is the best! Always have one once I reach, and one for the road.
Definitely hit all the best eats out there! Love this!
I saw some videos of yours and I found that you can eat many delicious food in Vietnam, more than other countries. Our food has many vegetables, so it's very good to eat everyday.
Nice edit, great contents, beautiful pictures. Well done!!!!
+Beyond South Tyrol appreciate it thank you!
Excellent storytelling technique! Great job! I love it!
