  • This gets into the "TRUE" zero decking of a block to get quench. Remember that quench occurs at .040 clearance of the quench side of the head to the flat part of the piston. You MUST use the exact Rod, Piston, bearings, Pins that your going to use in the build up, and you must use the same rod/piston combo on the 1,7, 2, 8 holes to eliminate differences between different rods and pistons.     I just want to say how informative I find your video's. I have some knowledge of the building and machining process but your descriptive presentation truly helps.

    Thanks much Yella, I am not a genius, or even a "TOP DOG" in the engine building world; however, I have worked with and been involved with several of the BEST in the world, and seen what they done, as you can see here. I have been sick (was sick) during the months of June, July and the beginning of August with the worst FLU (pneumonia in left lung) and I have NEVER been sick more than a couple of days my whole life. My town had an outbreak and many of my friends got this mess. I am back now!!!

    That is exactly what the doctor ordered, as this is going into a boat that the drive is limited to around 350 or so HP. He needed Gas Mileage to last a day or so, and I come up with this deal. I have done about 5 of these combos, and all my customers LOVE the crap out of it. the biggest kick was the gas mileage, and of course the LOW END PULLING power.

    Really enjoyed the video.
    I did alot of measuring on one of my honda road race engines and ran .024" total piston to head clearance. The engine made great power with really low amounts of timing. Ran up to 7500 rpm without a problem

    Yes you are right this is the only method of finding true zero deck for your block. Great video's. If you want to pick up a high quality travel indicator for cheap get on ebay and search for Federal travel indicators. I'm a machinist for a stainless steel company and the Federal indicators are as good as the Starrett's.

    In 1989 when I went to California to learn this stuff in a school setting, within a year I came up with this idea, but at that time it was impossible to achieve, no internet, and magazines ruled the world in that realm. There is two reasons I do this, and the main one is to give what took me so much pain to learn, and the fools I had to tolerate to learn it from, to pass it on so that people like you wont get cheated by these ruthless machine shops.     Respectfully a thought. Although it looks like your technique is superb and this video is very educational, you unfortunatly read your dial gauge backwards. You had .070" left to go to get to zero. I hope you caught it before sending it to get cut. Thank you for the video though. Actually all your videos! I like 'em!

      Matt Rampone I can tell you have not done this before, as the .070 Thou your rerurring to is NOT important, but rather the .030 after that it the amount that was STAMPED on the block, and the amount that has to be cut OFF the block on that hole (four hole, 1,7,2,8). The only measurement that matterd was the .030 Before the 70 your talking about, OR the piston would be .070 in the hole, and I have NEVER seen an SBC out that bad....Thanks....LOL

I don't have an ego to bruise like most people that do this, and fortunately I have not had any assholes like the forums to contend with so far (although I am sure they will come) I speak the truth, and I have seen and done everything to a working science here or I would not post it, including my goofs along the way (like the pouring of the aluminum which my friends said NOT TO POST because it made me look stupid) Thanks.
