I really liked the ending for Season 1. You can see that when they made that episode, they tried their best not to make it too over-the-top in humour. In the end it was so touching I had to quickly hide in my room to cry so that I could still preserve my manliness.
I actually want it to end within on December 24 within the Manga's timeline exactly one year after Hayate first met Nagi and for Hayate to finally reciprocate her feelings starting from there. An end that signals a beginning, so to speak.

While Hinagiku IS my favourite character from HnG, I would have much preferred Athena to be with Hayate. Why you say? Because she was the one who made him who he was! I found that concept nice.
Season 1 worked well as a stand-alone comedy anime, but it took too many liberties with the manga source material IMO. Some episodes just make my favorite character, Nagi, seem worse than she really is.
