    I dont support France, but tactically they were the better team. England had better possion because over 35% of the team touches came from the 2 CBs, Mcguire and Stone.
    Rabiot and Tchoumani applied the necessary pressure in the midfield to push Eng playing out wide left with no 1 on 1 opportunities as Dembele was dropping to cover Shaw. And Kounde was disciplined enough to stay with Foden.
    Rashford should hv came in at the 60th.
    Remember Deshamps did make any defensive tactical changes, maybe thats why Southgate was clueless about his changes

    • @footywithanedge
      @footywithanedge  Год назад +4

      @Sen Crypto France were only able to play with low possession because of a moment of individual brilliance from Tchouameni. After Kane got the equalizer, France had to come out and have more of the ball and they struggled to create much. Mbappe and Dembele didnt do much today even though they were France's best players coming into this game.
      I would have loved to have seen Rashford on in the 60th minute to see how France would have reacted.
      Thanks for your comment ❤️

    It was the same a few years ago against Croatia when Modric just controlled the ball against England.
    Apart from Kane, it seems no England player will have that free creative role to control possession.
    Foden through the middle is an option, but Southgate probably wants 3 muscle boys in the MF because he isn’t super confident with our defence, especially in terms of pace.
    If Kane is always dropping deep, he really needs someone in front of him, but I thought that game was also crying out for Maddison

    • @footywithanedge
      @footywithanedge  Год назад +1

      With Kane, you need atleast 1 player running in behind if not 2. Rashford was a must in the game when Southgate saw Foden being isolated on the LW. Rashford could have run in behind onto balls from Kane on the right side. Too bad Southgate was not decisive with subs!

  • @andresdias8264
    @andresdias8264 Год назад +3

    Totally agree about the subs. Southgate looked clueless. All the plays were coming from the right side for england which is an obvious sign Foden was having a hard time. When Shaw started pushing forward then and only then did chances start coming from the left. Up until then Foden was kept quiet. Southgate should have subbed off Foden at half time for Rashford or Grealish. France's defense were clumsy all game. England needed pace and more crosses into the box. France probably would have given away another penalty tbh.

    • @footywithanedge

      @Andres Dias couldnt have said it better myself! I've been crying out for Southgate to start Rashford on the wing. Could have played Mount, Maddison or Grealish as CAM. So many decisions that could have improved the team. Are you Southgate out now?

    We made a lot of fouls, they were so focused on mbappe they freed space in the middle. Waiting the 79th min to enter rashford was an heresy. A lot of things could have turned differently so many times , england played very good . Pogba and kante are old its best to play with a new generation of young midfield . Tchouameni is a monster

      @All Good Mbappe and Dembele were kept mostly quiet in this game. Rashford was in such good form, and Southgate brought him on AT THE 85th MINUTE!!
      Tchouameni is good, dont get me wrong - but he's still young! Griezmann was your best midfielder today by a long distance. France will definitely have to play better than today to win the World Cup. They will have to play with more than 70% possession because Morocco does not like having the ball!

      @All Good you make some great points! I think the game was very close and Southgate was HOPING it would work out & go to extra time atleast. The problem is that an experienced and skilled coach would have tried to IMPACT the game and win it in 90 minutes. Like you said, France didnt have as many options off the bench like England so bringing on fresh players would have caused France lot of trouble!

    The thing is the midfield was more of a support to saka foden kane in the first half. Their role of creating and defining the plays couldnt go beyond that, england had created decent threats from the right in the first half. Defensively they did a decent job but it just comes down to lack of composure and precision specially with the way Kane missed that spot kick.

    • @footywithanedge
      @footywithanedge  Год назад +2

      @LoudMouthFootball England created from the right because Kane was latching onto Upamecano who played as France's left CB. Foden couldn't impact the game without the ball (i.e. running in behind), so Rashford was needed. With him on the LW, Kane could drop in midfield and play balls in behind instead of attacking just from the right.

      @@footywithanedge you know Konate's had a better presence in that defense.. he's had the most defensive contributions in this tournament and when you aren't keeping him there it's sort of baffling .. looking at the vulnerabilities they've got at the back.. I won't be surprised if Morocco with the level of organization at the back and a good technical know how on those counters can take them out. I'm not worried about Rabiot though, he's been better than what we expected.. he does create turnovers in different phases.. but yeah they are susceptible to getting hit for sure.. we saw how much space the midfield left in between the channels. Hard luck England.

    England have a great no. 10 but they play him at 9. Kane's playmaking and vision are elite. Sir Alex would have seen the pace drop off in Kane and played him at 10 with Wilson ahead of him. Kane is also great at shielding the ball so he'd be winning FKs in the central areas up the pitch.
    These are the things England should have tried in the Nation's League. It's sad that Southgate is such an unimaginative manager.

    • @rishikamath6718
      @rishikamath6718 Год назад +1

      Also, why didn't Southgate mimic France's formation? He could have started Mount in the Griezmann role. Mount is a great presser up the pitch and while Griezmann kept dropping deep, he could have hounded him all over the pitch. Henderson in that midfield was mostly anonymous.

    • @rishikamath6718
      @rishikamath6718 Год назад +1

      Foden in an England shirt is a big worry. I don't remember him putting in an influential performance in a big game. Southgate clearly doesn't know how to use him best so why not go with Sterling from the beginning? Shocking decision-making from Southgate all over.

    • @footywithanedge
      @footywithanedge  Год назад +1

      @Rishi Kamath Southgate made tona of questionable decisions all over the pitch. You are right about Sir Alex: he would have read this as a one off game and realized that England can neutralize France by stopping Griezmann from running the game!
      Saka should have been on the pitch for the full 90 and Foden for Rashford in the 60th was the way to go. Also, a more daring coach would have subbed Kane off for Wilson in the 80th minute. Why not? Wilson is an experienced striker who gives you something different!

    There is different ways of winning, you could endure against a really good side and with a bit of luck plus some world class players come on top, but i would not say France played an ugly style of Football. Although, it's sad that England couldn't go further with so many great players. Maybe there is a psychological aspect of it that keep England not exploring their full potential.

    • @seanmacmillan5562
      @seanmacmillan5562 Год назад

      I agree, more shots and possession, but it didn't feel like they were really threatening France somehow.
      The Giroud header early, and save from Pickford were much better than any of the 15 or 16 attempts England had from range or maybe set pieces.

    • @footywithanedge
      @footywithanedge  Год назад

      England were better in the build up play from back to front. Their defense kept Mbappe and Dembele quiet (who have been in great form this tournament) and progressed the ball to midfield and the wingers. When Bellingham, Saka and Kane got on the ball, they cause Theo, Upamecano and Tchouameni trouble (2 penalties conceded and several shots on goal from Kane).
      France got really luck with a moment of brilliance from Tchouameni and then they could sit back and counter attack tilll England got the equalizer. Its hard to imagine hypotheticals, but if France didnt score in the 17th minute they would have struggled to create much in this game. Like you said, France had a poor display.
      So England played the better football but didnt take create enough clear cut chances. France got the long shot first goal, and took their 2nd chance from a world class Griezmann assist. Hope that helps!

    This isn't a criticism, I'm not getting at you, but...
    Americans don't fully understand football. You can't use American Football stats and apply them to European football, there's more to it than that. I'm from the UK and have no idea of the finer points of American football, I can quote stats all day long. It wouldn't matter.
