We learn from one of the conversations that Nuan has with Yixin that Yixin talks her out of reconnecting with Nankin soon after the breakup. He tries to talk with her immediately. She refuses. Her dad might have been able to help in this area. Her mom was either very ill or had already died. Her sister was consumed with quilt over the crisis she triggered. By the time we meet them, both Nuan and Naxian are heartbroken people. His very real love for her is also accompanied by anger with her for breaking up with him. Not even he stops to wonder how she has been affected by her own guilt. Each know they love the other but is afraid to say much for fear that the other no longer loves her/him. Yes they should talk. I think that even though he does not know about her illness, he is afraid that if he pushes for more conversation before he kisses her for the first time, she will run away. One of my favorite writers, Frederick Buechner, has one of his characters make this profound observation: "It is less the words they say than words they leave unsaid that split old friends apart." Naxian, I am sure, is afraid of pushing too far in questioning her. She, until he takes her to the house he has built for her, does not/cannot figure out what she can do to make him believe that she cares.
