This is my favorite video on looking for compositions in woodlands. You show all your images whether they "work" or not, and then speculate on what could improve them.
Great to hear you liked it Andre! I had a lot of fun shooting this one, although I did get soaked towards the end of the video! 😆 Thanks for watching 😁👍
Thank you! I need this reminder! I'm not as mobile as I used to be, but that is not an excuse. I just have to plan the adventures out so I can do them. 👍😬👍
Great to hear you liked my video Matthew. It's all about the planning when it comes to getting great shots ... and a lot of places can be accessed really easily. Sometimes when I am making my videos, I take a lot of filming kit with me and one thing I look for in the planning stage is how I can easily get to that location. Thanks for watching and keep shooting 😁👍
Hey Mike, I tried your advice on looking through the focus window to see what first catches your eye, that's your subject. We'll I tried that on a subject that I couldn't get right the other day, this time it worked better, so thanks for that, it helped
Ahh the infamous crash the drone while looking like a hero. Mid Wales looks amazing in the autumn. Flying to Dubai for the holidays so leaving the tropical greens for drabby sandy landscape haha. Hoping to do some cityscapes when I’m there for a change of scenery.
Good luck in the sandy city!! Wales is very much in autumn mode at the moment ... although all it will take are a few storms to blow all the leaves away and then there will be no colour whatsoever! 😆
Just came across your video and this is my favourite kind where you are actually on location, showing the photographs taken and at what settings, great for a beginner like me! Just subscribed :)
Love this video Mike, really great stuff. This has really inspired me to just get out and shoot even if it is in the woods because you never know what you may find. Unfortunately the woodlands here in Essex do not have waterfalls, but I am sure I will find something. Thanks for the inspo and the great videos that I am binge watching of yours!
Challenging venue - comp and environment - but you pulled out some good shots, Mike. Water drop on leaf on ground my fav - especially for a hand-held shot. Nice that you’ve perfected your “watch me disappear” video effect😊. Useful Tamron tip - is the lens weather sealed? Old saying “When you come to a fork in the road, take it”. 😊 Was not sure of which comparison shot used polarizer (one on right?) - labels would have helped, IMO. When you brace camera on bridge, do you still have IBIS on? Ah yes, the drone-eating tree; common in UK, I understand😊. Cheers!
Thanks Paul! The tamron has weather sealing, but I think I have taken it out in a lot of rain over the past few weeks ... so it might just be me thinking it is waterproof!! 😆 The one on the right was the one with the polarisation at max ... sorry, completely forgot to label it ... 🙈 I tend to leave ibis on all the time these days. with the sony cameras it doesn't really matter like it used to with the old dslrs and IS. That is the second time I crashed the drone in two weeks ... definitely need to be more careful!!! As always thanks for watching dude 😁👍
Hi Mike. Surprised re your comment with moisture in the Tamron lens. not had an !issue with mine and its been out in awful conditions recently! Not fond of capturing woodland without a tripod as I prefer to keep the ISO low. I would never consider raising it unless its very windy. Still interesting to see other ideas though! Happy snapping
Thanks very much Barry, great to hear you are getting on with your Tamron. I've been out in some pretty dire weather as well and it only fogged up when the sun was shining directly on it straight after a big rain shower. I'm a bit of a handheld shooter and only get the tripod out when needed ... I think I go through phases of using the tripod more and then using it less ... at the moment I am very much a handheld shooter. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Mike, I look forward to your videos and this one is very good as well. Your recommendation to look through the viewfinder and note where you eye goes is a great tip for better compositions. Thanks!
Thanks so much Jim! This was going to be the main theme of the video ... but then I got sidetracked when I crashed my drone trying to get b-roll! 😆 Holding the camera up to your eye really does get rid of the distractions you might have when just looking at the back of the camera ... I always tell people to review their shots through the viewfinder when running workshops and it really does help! Thanks for watching 😁👍
Hey! lots of nice autumn colour's in this video too! 😄 was a bit funny to hear that "crash noise" when the drone flew in to the tree 😅🙈, but it's good that the drone survived! and it doesnt feel like November for me yet, the snow hasnt fallen yet 😅
Haha! I might have added the crash noise for dramatic effect!! 😆 It is a really mild autumn so far ... I'm looking forward to some frosty scenes!! As always thanks for watching 😁👍
Hi Mike, nice to be watching this episode in mid January! I loved taking that woodland walk with you and you demonstrated some good composition tips (and what not to do with a drone ,ha,ha!) Could you recommend a polarizing filter for the Tamron 28-200, please? I just received my latest Tamron lens, the 20-40 f2.8. It's nice lens for the A7C and it is smaller and lighter and less front heavy than the 17-28 which I also own.
Haha! It seems like a long time ago when I filmed this one!! Luckily, no drones were harmed in the making of this video ... 😆 I use the freewell filters for my lenses, and the great thing with the 17-28 and the 28-200mm is that 67mm filter size ... no need for stepup rings!! What is the filter size of the 20-40mm? Here's the link for the freewell filters: geni.us/Freewell-CPL I hope that helps! 😀👍
@@mikesphotography Thanks Mike, I will check the filters out. Good news-the 20-40 f2.8 has the same 67mm filter size and it has the latest Tamron external design featuring the USB port for easy updating through the Tamron Utility app. I have already updated mine to ver. 2 and it couldn't have been easier. The new lens look is definitely more premium to my eyes. My only complaint, so far, is for the focus ring which is so close to the top of the lens that it is awkward to use with the lens hood in place but maybe a filter would solve that issue. I think for travelling the 20 to 40 will go nicely with my 28 to 200 with a good focal length overlap to avoid too many lens changes ( a problem I have when using the 17-28 as a walkaround.) Ha,ha- I woke up to unexpected snow this morning so I appreciate watching your autumnal ramble even more!
Really nice video Mike. Some great tips. I feel pleased that when you posted the first shot of the wooden bridge I thought "I wish he'd focus stacked that!" and then you did! Go me!! It made a really pleasing image. And the tip of getting the focus stack data just in case is something I need to hear. I often get exposure brackets just in case but forget to consider the focus stack.
Thanks so much James! Yep, I took a single shot handheld and after looking at it, thought it definitely needed to be stacked. I just wish I had focus stacked the first few shots of the waterfall as well ... I hadn't quite warmed up at that point in the morning!! 😆😆 Nowadays it does seem like it is a case of gathering data to then build the photograph afterwards. As always thanks for watching 😁👍

So I'll be able to focus on the channel and my website, developing it to give you guys a lot more content without any gaps ... Thanks again for all of your kind words of encouragement and support! 😁👍
Great video, Mike. I really liked a lot of the shots you got and once again, your drone footage is excellent. Damn shame about crashing your drone, but isn't it amazing how tough they are. I know you must have been upset about crashing it and very relieved when she cranked right up and took flight again. Let's just say mine has a few dings as well. I had to send it back once after a crash and DJI took care of it right away. Looks like autumn is in full swing over there. Enjoy it and keep up showing off all the beautiful scenery. Take care, my friend.

That is a strange linkage of thoughts but each to their own ... if using technology to get a camera to where you want it to be is cheating, then technically driving to a location is also cheating. The way I look at it is that if you are enjoying photography, then it is all good.

As always thanks for watching 😁👍
You thought or asked if placing or moving a leaf in a photo was 'cheatingl' on a recent post........ and flying a drone is it natural or cheating?
That is a strange linkage of thoughts but each to their own ... if using technology to get a camera to where you want it to be is cheating, then technically driving to a location is also cheating.
The way I look at it is that if you are enjoying photography, then it is all good.
