How likely is it?
What can be done about it?
How do we avoid it?
Summary:
Virtually no blood loss in the operating room.
Around 3% chance of bleeding at any point during the 2 week healing process. If this happens, bleeding will usually stop with ice chips, ice water.
Around 1% chance of requiring cauterization or stitch. Sometimes will require trip back to the OR.
During the 2 weeks post op, do not fly on airplanes, go out on boats, or venture too far from health care.

I was part of the small, unfortunate percentage. I experienced arterial and venous bleeding at the same time. One was happening lower down my throat, which was awful. I went into surgery and stayed at the hospital for 2 nights while they monitored my recovery. All is well now! No more infections. Although my experience was VERY traumatizing, I would do it again. Thanks for the great video!
Dr I just want to say thank you for posting these videos. I watched them prior to my surgery and have used them for reference during the recovery period. It helps alleviate some of the anxiety of the process knowing things I am experiencing are normal. Tomorrow I am at day 7 from the operation. Pain got worse today as I think the scabs started to fall off.
Dr. Liu you are awesome! Made me feel much better and more knowledgeable about my situation. Thank you!
THANK YOU FOR THESE VIDEOS
Your piano is beautiful.

I’m getting my tonsils out next week and I am sooo nervous and anxious after reading all these comments. Time to pray
Got mine out today and it hurts when drinking and swallowing meds. Also ears hurt soo much when waking up 🥲
@@muniraa4433 honestly I found that constantly drinking cold water and keeping them wet helps the most
@@lorennicole5694 Oh ok, thanks 😊
I was 12 years old when i had my tonsillitis taken out then a few weeks later I vomited a cup of blood at home then went to the hospital just as i was about to lay in the bed i rushed straight to a white sink and vomited pints of blood luckily I was in the hospital God bless people who work in the medical care
I am part of the 1%. Woke up realizing I was constantly swallowing in my sleep. It was blood. It was a terrifying experience. After the ER staff controlled bleeding my ENT doctor had to put me back under for repair. I’m now home recovering.
well lucky me i was in the 1% today😂 mine happened on day 11 and i woke up choking on blood! the cauterization surgery wasn’t bad though! i was put under within 30 minutes of arrival and i feel better than i did before it happened! so don’t be nervous if it happens to you just go to the emergency room asap!
Taylor Bowman I was the 1% too
Same! There was a blood clot on the left side of my throat, so I got it cauterized this morning. How long does the pain last? Is it the same type of
Pain as post tonsillectomy?
Appreciate Video clip! Forgive me for the intrusion, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Conrayden Surveillance Equalizer (do a search on google)? It is an awesome exclusive guide for discovering the cure for tonsil stones minus the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate finally got excellent results with it.
Did the surgery last march and enter the 1% group 1 week after the surgery. Bleeding during sleep wake up and vomitting blood until tongue feel numb and still see blood squirting from the surgery area. Goes into emergency surgery at 3am.
I’m the 1%, I’m just curious what are the chances of a rebleed after a post tonsillectomy bleed
Amen Horta stories, everybody’s ready to tell you about it and not the good ones!
Today is 12 days since my tonsillectomy. It was by far the worst and most painful experience of my life. I don't know if I would do it again if I could go back in time... Up until day 5 I did nothing but take pain killers and sleep. I tried to eat solid food because my Dr told me to. He said it would help remove the scabs and prevent bleeding. Early morning day 7 I took a pain pill to help with sleep and started choking. Ended up spitting out lots of blood, then the bleeding would calm down and then start again. This happened three times in about 45 minutes. Then I started throwing up blood and went to the ER. The whole ordeal was quite scary. I spent the day in hospital and now I'm almost 100% recovered, only a small amount of pain, no need for medication any more.
Yep, I'm one of the very few 3%. Mine bled last night like crazy. My doctor said to eat ice cream and drink cold water. I actually walked the whole day that might be the cause of it.
How did things turn out?
Your Drs just said do that and you were ok? I'm on day 5 I coughed threw up was bleeding didn't feel good went er they said everything looks fine took some IVs pain meds. I'm home but coughed again and bleed I'm eatn ice to stop it
@@GeneLiuMD is it normal to cough then bleed fresh blood . I went er was feeln dehydrated they switched pain meds . And gave IV fluids and pain medicine but I'm home had coughed again blood again and like phlegm eatn ice and stopped is that normal the er Dr said my tonsils looked find recovering
@@nay.VirgoQueenin hey are you ok now? Did it bleed more and stop in it’s own?
thanks for video! immediteately after surgery i had they more blood when a teaspoon it was something like 80ml but i dont have history of bleeding disorders
Dr. Liu, I wish our ENT had properly explained the risks more clearly. I feel like being in the 4% and then the 1% took us completely by surprise. On day 10, my then 6 year old daughter had an arterial bleed and was swallowing the blood as it was at the back of her throat and naturally had nowhere else to go. The paramedics couldn't see anything but we transported her to hospital via ambulance anyway. She was given zofran as her stomach was tender. Little did we know what was happening at that time. Two hours later she began vomiting copious amounts of blood. She was rushed to the ER. After transfusion she was fine but absolutely traumatized by the experience, as was I. I cannot encourage parents enough to keep close watch of their children. Yes, it's rare, but it happens. If bleeding occurs you need to access an ER immediately.
Thankfully she is fine now. 9 years old, no longer traumatized, and strep free for 3 years. Prior to that she was sick every month and it was so taxing on us all. The benefits of removing her tonsils and adenoids have been numerous.
I’m on day 7 after my recovery. Just had a couple little pink scabs come off. Tasted blood. Popsicle and it stopped. All good. I also have a 6 year old and am so glad I’m dealing with this and not her. Your horror story would have me rushing her to the ER in an instant, even if it was far milder (like mine just was)
Dr I just want to say thank you for posting these videos, please what I want to ask is that my daughter is 2year 5month an she is having turbinates in her nose 👃 I don’t know how to treat it I went to hospital every time but still nothing better
I have needed my tonsils out for about 5 years... Still fighting with my insurance so fingers crossed i get approved soon.
Hi Dr. Liu, my 6 year old had surgery 6 days ago last Tuesday and she had a small cold the week before her surgery. She has adenoids and tonsilectomy. She has had a productive cough shes been trying to hard to get rid of. Should I be worried of bleeding? Any advice to help her cough? I am a nervous mom because we are about an hour from the hospital...should I be concerned about getting her that far away if she bleeds?? Hope you can help us! I am a mess and your videos are soothing my anxiety!
Instead of cauterizing my emergency room used a spray and an inhalant medicine for the wound to close which worked. Likely a more comfortable solution than cauterizing
Dr. Liu can you make a video about intracapsular coblation tonsillectomy?
It’s my 7th day post op recovery and so far so good. I’m starting to eat normal food but still cautious with solid and hard food, not also eating spicy food. So far, there is no pain as I have pain killer with anti inflammatory meds for 10 days, it’s just uncomfortable feeling. Make sure to stay hydrated and eat ice chips or popsicles. I will be seeing more improvement in the next couple of days and cant wait to go back to normal.
how was your recovery in 3 4weeks? mine removed 6 days ago. painful n miserable day 1 - 3.5
by day 5 i eat normal food n but no hot. im scared people kept saying u will bleed because it was too much and too soon.im worried it will come true

I’m one of the unlucky ones. I started intense bleeding yesterday. Gagging and vomiting blood for 2 hours. They put me under again and cauterized my wounds. It was scary, but I’m happy they were able to fix it.
How was the pain after they cauterized it again? I’m on day 5 and I feel like death. It’s been constant agony the last 5 days and constant bleeding through my nose. I have a clot on my right side, just unsure if that’s bad or not lol

Thanks so much for your videos, I'm 40 and thinking to do this surgery specially my health issues always start with my Tonsols, start to get irritated and ends in asthma. My question is can I take Oxycodon for pain? sorry for my English. have a nice day!
Hi Gene,
If you have a bleeding disorder (congenital platelet function defect: platelet storage pool disorder) and you need a tonsillectomy, is there a risk of a fatality even after you get a platelet transfusion and a possibly cauterized.¿
Dr Liu. Do you perform tonsillectomy using the coblation technique?
I had a small blood clot but it wasn’t anything to worry about.
Hi Gene great video! I would like to know if you can help me with this one, my case is completly different. 3 days ago my girlfriend got a bleeding from her Tonsil that last around 3 to 4 minutes (she was spitting fresh blood) honestly it wasn't a lot but also it was not something normal... so the thing is that she doesn't have any surgery recently (she removed her tonsils 15 years ago!)... My girlfriend is 26 years old and she doesnt drink or smoke (she is a singer though) we had 4 weeks a go a Commo Cold but it last just 1 week and then everything was fine... this bleeding came from nowhere (right after she drank a hot tea, like she does every day) then after 2 hours she got again another bleeding but like 2 minutes and stoped (she also got a hot beverage in that moment right before the bleeding started, We live in China so it is very difficult to communicate with the doctors I will like to know if you can shine some light on it? sorry for my english it is not my first language, ... anyways we went to the hospital they didnt know how to explain it and they sent us home.. she hasnt bleed Anymore (this last 2 days) only drinking cold stuff, she got a blood test and everything came Clean (even a coagulation test).. the doctor just read the blood test he said it Looks like a "virus" because some things are slightly High but very very little.. anyways thank you if you can help I will appreciate.
There are many blood vessels in the nose/mouth/throat that can pop and bleed. This is more likely to happen when there is inflammation (like an illness). It is entirely possible that this is what happened and it never happens again.
And it's also possible that there is another explanation. An ENT might need to do a thorough evaluation and possible scope to make sure there isn't anything else going on.
Unfortunately was in the 1% on day 12, which was surprising to emergency staff as this is considered rather late. Woke up in the middle of the night choking on the scab/ blood, lost a lot of blood and spend an hour or two in the hospital coughing up blood clots and blood which was awful and it wasn't for stopping. Ended up having to go and have the additional surgery, and spend the night in hospital for monitoring purposes, 4 days post op from this, recovering well and experiencing very little pain.
Interestingly, the side that bleed was the tonsil that I often had the most problems with pre-operation, causing it to be heavily scared and was the most painful post surgery.
Dr Liu I had my tonsils removed one month ago today I still have those blisters on the back of my tongue, how can I get rid of these? And I am still having difficulty talking is this normal?
My sis was that one percent, scariest moment to see my sis like that but I had to look brave for her, the worst part was, was the night she vomitted blood and woke me up for it, my parents thought to give her cold things like ice cold water, popsicles, things to make it stop...it did but the next night after I had slept with her in the living room to watch her it happened again, even worse that time so they took her to the emergency room but they wouldn't let me come considering that I hadn't slept since I was watching her the night before(staying up on my phone beside her) so I stayed home but yet again stayed up; to text them for a reminder if she was alright cause they had to take a bucket and a big cup of ice and water to slow down the bleeding while they were driving. I then waited for a reply to see if she was alright, which I later got but I think the most frightening part about those nights was when I would be standing by her while she was hunched over the toilet bleeding from her mouth like a slow water faucet while I was shivering but still keeping my composure. The doctor had told my parents that if they didn't take her to the hospital that night than she would've died to bleeding since it wouldn't have been semi controlable anymore. She was really pale for a couple days but I just thank God for watching her during the procedure that she went through the second time and to thank him for her being here.(It was an artery that was bleeding btw)
Hey I'm a University student and I have an upcoming tonsillectomy. Would attending classes for up to 4 hours three times a week count as strenuous activity?
Hello lI had my surgery about 5 days ago now, and now I was recauterized last night, but after 24 hours whoever I get up, I still see a little blood with the spit. Bad thing is I was supposed to go back to medical school tomorrow 😑 I just hope this stops and heals. FYI, reply to this post if you have questions and if I see the notification, I will help answer whatever questions about this.
I had an adult tonsillectomy 9 days ago and I am still in so much pain. I was prescribed Percocet every 4-6 hours and ibuprofen every six hours. I’m using ice chips like crazy and ice pops but the pain never goes away.
Damn they prescribed you percocets? I’m 17 and I smoke weed about to get a tonsillectomy I don’t wanna worry about a percocet addiction too now, how did u get off of it
@@jaymoney8793 oh it was easy, don’t misuse them, you will totally be ok. I can’t lie, for me the pain was so serious that the pills worked to keep the pain manageable. BUT once the pain decreased I just stopped using the pills. The recovery was about 12 days? But the surgery was 100% WORTH IT. No more tonsil pain!
@@francoaguilar2251 thank you! I’ll come back with my results when it’s done
@@jaymoney8793 hi so did you do tonsillectomy?
The only thing that helps with my pain was taking the pain meds in addition to an anti inflammatory. When I had my second bleeding and didn’t take anti inflammatory, the pain meds didn’t do much. I was in soooo much pain
I keep on spitting out blood and coughing and I’m on day 9 almost 10 and this helped
I had two episodes of bleeding, on day 10 and day 11. It happened while i was sleeping and after reading the comments, i realise it happened for quite a number of people while in the middle of sleep too. Dr, do you have any observations on why it might be so. Does our sleeping position affect the chances of bleeding. Thank you for this info sharing, it helped to allay my anxiety about my situation.
Was wondering the same thing
Probably because while sleeping you went too long without hydrating your throat. It's good to wake up every hour to drink water. When your throat gets dry it tears the scabs and causes bleeding. Some use a humidifier to keep the air moist, it helps too.
I feel like I almost died from this. I ran out of pain meds, the doctor wouldn't give me more so I took ibuprofen like an idiot. My bathroom looked like a murder scene and blood was gushing out of my mouth for hours in the middle of the night. I lived alone and couldn't get ahold of anyone to go to the hospital. As my bathroom garbage can started to fill with blood, I estimated maybe a quart and a half, I was becoming disoriented and had it in my head that I couldn't call 911 because it is so expensive. Finally, someone called me back and rushed over and took me to the hospital where I had to have it recauterized and a blood transfusion. They said I was in some sort of shock.
How was your recover after you were cauterized the second time? I was cauterized for the second time today and am so nervous the bleeding will happen again. Mine was severe like yours. I hope you are much better now.
@@Uberfrau5 yeah, all good now. Did you take ibuprofen? Don't! It thins your blood and messes with the scab. That's what I did wrong. How much blood did you lose?
bestsnowboarderuknow really ? I went to the hospital because I was bleeding and the nurse mixed ibuprofen and tytlenol and made me drink it
I had mine removied 8 days ago and it's starting to get better. However, I have sort of a scar on my right tonsil which makes it hard to swallow and talk. Does anyone else have this problem and how did you fix it or when did it go away?
More of a scab, it feels like it's in the way of me being able to swallow and without it I would have felt so much better!
I have foamy spit on day 8 of my recovery it just started to happen it hasn't been all day but is that bad or something I should worry about
Super informative! I’m apart of the 1%. I hemorrhaged four times at home 8 days post-op (it was a lot of blood but I the dr told me to wait it out) on the fourth time I lost so much blood it was just pouring out. I went to the ER and they rushed me to surgery. On the OR table the anesthesiologist was putting a tub in my throat and the blood vessel popped yet again and they had to suction me. Doctor told me the next day they suctioned about a cup in that hemorrhage alone. It was wild. I had to stay at the hospital for two days and now I am terrified for when these stitches fall. If it happens again I have to be rushed into surgery again. Easily the worst week of my life 😢 I guess we will find out in five days if I can make it out of this 😩
Did you make it out ok? How are you doing now?
Wtf? That is so messed up
Literally the same thing happened to me same exact thing
I was also that 1%! (Day 8 post op) Went into the ER last night at 3am due to spitting up blood, called doctor and she had me come in. Hi Dr Gene Liu, thanks for your video. I had my tonsillectomy surgery done on April 7th , from day 4 to 11 I had sever pain , on day 12 had little bleeding and it stopped after I drink cold water (it was about 2 to 4 min). Again on day 16 and 17 had little bleeding and stopped again after with ice water. On day 17th that is today, 2 times I had little bleeding and stopped after I drank ice water. May I know what should I do to avoid the bleeding? Do I need to go for emergency? I am really worried why my recovery is too slow , still I have white patch on the tonsils bed which is not yet healed completely.

@@anuragsingh-wh7gu hi Anurag .. Same here . I’m suffer from tonsil stones for past 2years.. wot issues are u facing with ur tonsils
@@ranjanashukla3046 I know it's a tad bit late to reply but if you are still confused as to whether you want to have tonsillectomy or not then do read this.
First of all its important to know about your tonsil stones-
1)do they form on the surface of the tonsil and are easy to remove?
Or
2) do the stones form in a hard to reach cave like area formed between the tonsils and the surrounding tissue?
You can find this out by using the tip of your tongue to navigate towards the tonsils and to try to feel for tonsil stones or just understand the tonsil surface and its geometry/topology/shape and size.
If your case is of the first type then a slight change/alteration in habits related to oral hygiene can help, that is - 1) avoid rinsing your mouth with water upto atleast 20 minutes after brushing just spit the tooth paste out and that's it (only use drinking water to rinse your mouth not tap water, because tap water can contain excessive mineral compounds such as calcium and magnesium)
2) you can apply toothpaste to the tip of your tongue and then use the tip of your tongue as a tooth brush to clean the tonsils and the surrounding area.
3) tilting your head to the sides while gargling(to gargle the tonsil area) but be super careful.
If your case is of the second type and bad breath is really troubling you (which is normal) then tonsillectomy is the only permanent solution, but do find someone who is experienced in this... I assume you're from India- so the tonsillectomy operation would cost around 30k to 60k depending upon the hospital, location, method used etc.
Just make sure that you have a week off post surgery, let the surgeon know two weeks in advance that you're willing to go ahead with the operation and ask him/her about things that you should avoid leading upto to the day of the operation (there are certain medications that you need to stop taking weeks before being operated)..
Hope you find this helpful
And p.s if you're worried about whether removing tonsils could hinder your throat's immune responses then don't worry as there have been studies done regarding this you can read online which suggest that there is no evidence of a significant clinical effect of a tonsillectomy on the immune system.
@@akashawasthi8129 thank you Akash 🙏🏻.. I truly appreciate your response and time taken out by you to write this!! … I fall in the 2nd category wherein my stones are hidden ( formed in the caves deep) and are visible only wen I try to press and scrap them out from the sides of the tonsils . I just had a scare tonight. Nothing really tells you how much blood is too much and when to go to the ER. I was spitting out about a little more than a shot glass of blood. That doesn’t take into the account how much I’ve swallowed. It was very concerning and I had a panic attack and went to the ER
I was that 1% on 16 day post surgery. I thought I was in the clear but nope 😢
Well, I vomited stomach fulls of blood and ended up being carried down to the ambulance. Recovered after two units of blood. That was several years ago. Not sick often anymore so I don't regret it now.
At day 8 I bleed all through the night coughing up blood but because I was so tired I didn’t realise until it had been heavily bleeding for hours. I ran into my mums room and we went straight to the hospital. From that hospital they sent us in an ambulance to a specialist hospital where they had an ENT specialist surgeon. I got put into a ward for a night and left the next day, however because of the severe loss of blood I felt extremely week for about five days after. Overall though it wasn’t too bad I think it was worth it for the amount of time I had my tonsils out.
The only extremely bad thing was the fact that while I was at the hospital in total I had at least 16 tubes of blood taken out of me to test for diseases and get my blood type in case I needed a blood transfusion
Wow, I hope that this was something from a long time ago and that you've fully recovered. Bleeding, though rare, can be serious.
I have henoch Schnolein Purpura. An autoimmune disorder that attacks my blood capillaries which results in a blood stain looking rash on my skin annd during a flare up I have an increased chance of bleeding internally easily. I most likely an going g to need a tonsillectomy, would that be considered a higher risk for bleeding in surgery? Or even after the surgery?
There aren't exact numbers regarding the risk of bleeding for HSP, but I would certainly expect the risk to be higher during the post-operative period.

I bled on and off for almost 3 hours!! I was throwing up blood and then coughing up blood clots like crazy! I tried to breathe but i couldn’t because the blood was filling up my mouth so fast. I thought for sure something was wrong, but we went to the ER and they said everything was fine!! literally WORST experience i’ve EVER HAD!!!!!!
Is your uvula supposed to be swollen? Mine is in my throat and it’s stuck there
Day 7 and I woke up this morning because of the blood going down the back of my throat, I kept swallowing it which made me feel really nauseous while my mom was on the phone with my ENT. I threw up and the only thing in my stomach was water and A LOT of blood. Throwing up made it bleed more and when I started to gargle ice cold water it started to bleed even more because I wasn’t gargling it for long enough. Eventually it stopped bleeding but 1 hour later I threw up again and the blood started pouring again, quickly stopped it with ice water. Really hope it doesn’t bleed like this again or else we’ll probably have to go back to the ENT.
Sorry that you are going through this. Definitely let the ENT know with _any_ more bleeding. You might even consider going to the emergency room as well.
I have just done my surgery last wednesday, got out of hospital during thurs, went back in during saturday as was bleeding alot , cant stop and vomiting blood clots. Just got redischarged on tuesday, and just now when i was trying to have rice, i bleed again, i really do not want to return to the hospital again, anything i can do?
You should definitely seek care again through the emergency room immediately. Even a slow drip can add up to a lot of blood loss, especially if you already bled before.
Just wondering, what is the advice on alcohol consumption? Im on day 10 Post-Tonsillectomy and have a birthday coming up. Pain is very manageable, however, would light alchohol intake increase the risk of bleeding?
I would very strongly recommend not drinking alcohol for at least another week. You will not yet be completely healed and alcohol can cause a significant amount of direct irritation to the area.

I bled twice post surgery, once on day 7 but it was about a tea spoon of blood, the second time on day 10 which was about a 1/4 to 1/2 cup of blood. The second time was definitely more scary as it was pouring out of my mouth pretty fast. Both times I went to ED and they managed to stop the bleeding conservatively without surgery. I was in there for a few days each time. Im on day 14 now however not out of the woods yet. They sent me home with medication to clot my blood to prevent bleeding. I was told it was because of an infection and there was nothing i could of done about it.

I'm praying it dosent happen again they said if it happened again I'd have to go back to the er and I don't want to do that.
I came across this video because... low and behold, I am having this surgery. I am so nervous. If it bleeds, can you apply direct pressure until you get to an ED?
I sneezed last night 11 days post op and started profusely bleeding. My body clotted it well but the ER still had to give me a clotting medicine. Luckily no surgery! Hoping this new clot scab heals without more bleeding. I’m that 1% 🙄
I have a bleeding now, should I go to the doctor or should I try the ice cream 🍦
Are tiny specs of blood ok? I'm on day 8, not in much pain.
I’m on day 8 and it seems no scraps have fallen off yet is that normal
Hi I done my surgery now last two days I got bleeding during night while I was in deep sleep. I afraid and went to doctor he says to eat ice cream during bleeding. How many days this bleeding will have Please reply doctor.
What are your thoughts on loosing taste? I lost mine and all is tasting like sucking on coopers :( Had the procedure twice - once for removing, one for severe bleeding.
There are many reasons for this, nearly all of them very temporary. It is really common to have alterations in taste for a few days or weeks. Multiple procedures makes it more likely. Your surgeon will have more insight into your specific situation about what to expect and why it happened.
My doctor is doing T&A and Turbinate Reduction at the same time. I’m 27 years old. I am super worried about bleeding because of the Turbinate Reduction. The doctor said that will cause stuffiness afterwards. I have sleep apnea as well and I am worried that combination might result in me mouth breathing while sleeping and leading to my throat drying out and scabs falling off too soon and bleeding. Are my worried unfounded or valid?
It is very common to do these procedures at the same time. It does not change the bleeding risk in any significant way. A humidifier in the bedroom will definitely help with some of the dryness issues but is not absolutely necessary.
I just had a tonsillectomy 5 days ago. I’ve had a lot of pain but it’s manageable.
I’m concerned because I clear my throat ALOT due to acid reflex, and even though I’ve tried my best to not, I’ve done it a few times during post op recovery. Also, one of my tonsil beds has a bright red streak that looks like a cut. I haven’t spit out any fresh blood tho, only old brownish blood. But should I be worried about the red streak? I’m just not sure if it’s normal or not.
It's hard to know from your description. Certainly, fresh blood would be concerning. Other times, a slow drip could collect blood in the stomach and cause nausea. If you vomit up brown/black "coffee grounds" appearing material, it likely means there is ongoing bleeding. Also, blood further down your intestines can cause cramps, loose stools, diarrhea that can be black or "tarry".
Gene Liu, MD, MMM thank you for replying! I went to the ER a couple of days ago for bleeding. It wasn’t bleeding profusely, it was mainly just spitting up a lot of blood. They sent me home with ice chips and I saw my ENT the next day who gave me an antibiotic shot. Ive still been bleeding and the on call nurse told me I may have to get cauterized again tomorrow with some chemicals. It’s crazy because my post-op experience has been a breeze other than the bleeding:)
I was the 3% last night! I woke up coughing and choking on bright red blood. I fell asleep with a hot water bottle on my ear due to earache so I can only imagine the heat thinned my blood and caused this. I swallowed most of the blood but I did spit a fair amount into a cup, so that was about an inch or two or bright red blood. It was terrifying! I put a bag of peas on my throat and drank cold water which stopped the bleeding after 10 minutes, my throat looks okay now no active bleeds anymore. I’m scared to eat and drink now! It was genuinely terrifying. Any advice? Can I eat normally now? I’m scared it will happen again. I am Day 8 Post Op :)
Hi Erin same problem to me I have done undergone surgery on 2/8/2021 and now last 3 days I got bleeding how to cure it kindly give me some advice.
@@VALPARAISPECIAL Hello! I’m not really a doctor but what helped me was placing a frozen bag of peas (or anything cold really!) over my neck and throat, this then constricts the blood vessels and stops bleeding. It’s scary lol so I feel for you. I think after it happened I was really wary about what I ate for a day or two as I didn’t want to knock the clot out of place and have it happen again. Try cold yogurt, ice cream and mousse as this is soft and cold, definitely keep away from anything warm near your neck and throat and if in doubt contact your surgeon :) It also helped me to not talk or cough/anything that would make it move. Hopefully there’s light at the end of the tunnel for you!
I had constipation and popped something in my mouth I bled for a like 5 minutes but now I’m fine like I still bleed only a little bit in my spit I’m on the end of day 7
Thanks my 4 year old son next week please let me know what types of foods and should he avoid dairy products?

My son just bled for the second time! He went in a day ago for heavy bleeding and after cauterizing, he had to do the same thing again today. We are super nervous that it will happen again. Our Dr said that he has seen less than 10 times in his career where he has had bleeding twice in a patient. Anything you recommend?
Sorry to hear about your little one! I'm sure it's a very stressful to go through. As your doctor said, this is something that definitely can happen, but is really rare. Make sure to discuss with your doc, but some things to consider:
- avoid any remotely strenuous activity
- go back to cold liquids (even back to popsicles)
- take only tylenol and/or a narcotic for pain
Hang in there.
This happened to me. How did he do after the 2nd cauterizing ?
Hi I done my surgery now last two days I got bleeding during night while I was in deep sleep. I afraid and went to doctor he says to eat ice cream during bleeding. How many days this bleeding will have..i have scared...
Is Cauterizing is must to stop bleeding...
Hi doc , i have recurrent pharyngitis and tonsillitis , i was given antibiotic and taking it for 10 days and gargle salt water 3-4 times a day, what can i do to stop recurrent pharyngitis and tonsillitis? What to eat ? Thank you so much 😊
There are many reasons why someone develops recurrent infections. (ex: underlying immune deficiency, poorly controlled diabetes, frequent exposure to pathogens, rheamatologic disorders, etc) Generally, it would be useful to see a primary care doctor to evaluate for these other medical conditions. If nothing is found, then a meeting with an ENT may be beneficial.
Thanks doc , I’ll be meeting with my ENT on the 7th of May 😊
I'm on day 11 now and yesterday I had a small amount of blood in my saliva for like 10 min. I was so scared, but by reading the other comments of people who experienced bleeding, it seems that in my case ithe bleeding was way less severe. i think I've just eat too solid yesterday and this made the scabs fall (maybe). But is it still dangerous?
I actually bleed yesterday, the day before that and twice the past night, luckily it stopped after 4-5 Minutes by us just spitting it out and putting ice packs on my neck as well as eating ice afterwards. Im on day 10 now and I hope I am done with the bleeding now, it is actually really scary, even when it stops. I guess in my case its random whenever my body decides to get rid of scabs, because it was always in the evening or at night, haven't been doing anything all day and at least 3+ hours after I last ate something. I really hope tonight were my last scabs coming of. im done with the bleeding tbh :D
My niece is 5, and avid thumb sucker and is in the small one percent, has been in twice for cauterizing and needed a blood transfusion on round two, anybody know if possibly the suction from thumb sucking the cause?! She’s still not out of the woods, was sent home yesterday morning, we all watching her like a hawk.
I bleed my 3rd day a lot lot but until I got up it kinda stopped it’s weird I want this pain to stop already I’m tired of this
So I just had mine removed. Am I alright if it's just a very very small amount of blood?
Hi , I had my surgery about 9 days ago and last night while I was getting ready to go to bed I felt warm liquid in my mouth and I spit it out it was blood it was coming out bright red and it wasn’t a lot maybe about 3 spoons but I still was scared I’m 13 my mom took my to the hospital because it was out of nowhere and wanted to make sure it was nothing serious the doctors said it was normal but do you think it is normal or ? Oh and the bleeding last about only 5 mins
Leslie Molina Hmm... well, I’m on my first day, but I’d have to come back to your comment in a few days.
Just happened and I freaked tf out. I've been eating soilds to cope with my meds. I felt a warmness in my mouth and was like what the heck as I spit out. Come to find out it was blood. ALOT of it. Felt like something bursts from my right side and sure enough it was blood. I feel a lot better though. Should I go to the ER still??
what happened.. tell us... me on day 6 now
Got tonsils out yesterday, started bleeding next day, not alot but seems like it bled forever
I’m on post-opt day 11 and this morning I woke up with blood gushing out my mouth and it lasted about 15 minutes. I got it to stop by drinking ice cold water and sucking on ice chips. I was eating fine yesterday (soft chicken nuggets, pasta, soft baked cookies) but when can I start eating that stuff again? I’m taking it safe today and only eating jello and applesauce.
P.s. I started bleeding because last night was my first night I slept through the night without waking up to go drink water or take medicine (big mistake).
Hopefully there has been no more bleeding. I encourage you to let your surgeon know about the bleeding that already happened, and certainly if any bleeding happens again.
Dr. Liu should I go see to the ER if I am bleeding on my 1st day. I noticed that my left tonsil the area where it's supposed to be white(cautaurize area) its not. It was earlier. But later in at nighy I had to sneezed and that's when I started bleeding. It bled for 10-15 mins then stop after I drink cold water. Unfortunately I have no popsicles or ice cream. It tends to bleed every 1 1/2hr. So for 4x. Is this normal?
I strongly recommend calling your surgeon's office ASAP. If you aren't sure, going to the ER is always the safest route. There's no way to predict what may happen next. We usually want no bleeding at all.
Bleeding is a risk that can happen at any point from the OR to the time where the last little bit of scab is gone (typically 2 weeks post op). We don't like any bleeding. Sometimes a little bleed is all that there is. Other times, little bleeds happen before a big bleed.
@@GeneLiuMD ... Thank you Dr. Liu... After asking you the question I ended up going to the ER. I was bleeding really bad. Come to find out my left tonsil wound opened. I had to rinse my mouth with ice cold water to stop the bleeding. No antibiotics given. Since the bleeding stopped they recommended rest, keep hydrated, ice chip, sit upright position, etc. They said I have to let the body heal on it's own. I guess my healing is backwards. Heavy bleeding now n light bleeding later.
@@lindalinda5568 Glad you went to the ER. Antibiotics don't do anything for bleeding either way. Definitely take it easy, ice cold, hydration, upright, etc... are all the right things. There are times when someone might need cauterization or sutures if it keeps happening. Fingers crossed it doesn't bleed anymore. Best of luck!
I was in the 1%. We didn’t know I was still bleeding. What happened was I started to smell. Blood was building up in my stomach. My mom called the dr he told her to bring me to the hospital, guess because I was moving around by the time we got to the hospital blood was coming out of my mouth. They turned me on my side and rushed me to emergency surgery. The dr said there was so much blood in my stomach. I was 11 it was horrible.
Wow my 5 year old had this surgery a week ago and he is one of those 3% he is bleeing at day 7
Does anyone know anything about taking steroids post op? I’m on day 4 and my doctor put me on course of steroids on day 2 because my throat was so swollen that I was hard to even take sips of water. I didn’t want to stop drinking water cause I know how it’s important. And I chocked a few times trying to take the pills. So I called him and he prescribed me methylprednisolone to bring down the edema and to help with the pain, but now I’m freaking out because I heard that steroids can delay healing and may cause bleeding. Anyone please tell me what you know about it?? I mean it’s hard to think my doctor would prescribe it to me if there were risks of bleeding but that’s what Google told me and I’m freaking out. And I’m only starting day 5 this morning ! 😥
Hi doc I am on 8th day post op and had a bleed it is now clotted is it possible to bleed severely like it did today (currently in hospital on antibiotics and painkillers)
Sorry to hear about the bleed. It's always a scary thing to be going through. The overwhelming likelihood is that it won't bleed, but there is always a small chance. Take it easy and good luck.
Its the same day as my surgery and a started bleeding moderately but ice cold water stopped it. Just really worried it will happen again. Other then the bleed I am doing pretty fine.
Bummer. Did you talk to your surgeon about it? Just make sure that you keep him/her in the loop. And if the bleeding is at all significant, you may need to go to the emergency room. You can ask your surgeon for how and when to notify them and what to do if it happens again. Good luck!
I was bleeding a lot and it always happens the day after I get good sleep and I bleed all the time at night and I don't know what I do wrong
I had bleeding at 10 am while cooking on my 18th day ..I cried not to want to emergency again for d pains
