I love the sound of the SE-02. However I found it very difficult to tweak in a live, dimly lit setting. I've seen some pretty cool knob swaps online that could make all the difference. There are other options out there for a similar sound; but none cover all the same features. If they ever release a larger format SE-02 I'll be first in line.

Nice little beast, roland did a good job hiring studio electronics! Studio Electronics SE02, is perhaps the most underestimated synth available (Rolands hideous 'Boutique' format aside). A more usable, larger format desktop module would be most welcomed.

I’ve been considering the SE-02 but have now started GASing for the Moog Subsequent CV 37... I have a Sub37 and it’s dark character for bass. Both SUbsequent 37 and SE-03 are bright and would be great lead compliments. What would you recommend and pick?
Hm, the subsequent is what twice the price? So an SE-02 would probably be my pic. More exciting sequencer and you don’t have to worry about space issues
BoBeats I agree with you there Bo. Two Sub37 tribute and a Subsequent CV isn't really appealing to me. Most people who had both ended up getting rid of one. This is the only boutique that I have ever really been interested in from Roland. If I purchased one it would be for a portable studio set up which I am contemplating
Luke Kage I currently have only the Sub37. I been thinking about adding either the SUbsequent CV37 or Roland SE-02. I like how the expanded headroom in SUbsequent 37 gives a more bright and open tone that would be nice for leads with Sub37 hitting dark bass tones. However, the SE-02 has a nice mod matrix, nice tones and is 1/3rd the price. What would you pick?
Shawn Saul I would go for the SE-02 out of the two of them. I admit that I am a Moog fan and if money wasn't an option I would say go for a Moog Model D re-issue if you want bright and also something that already is and will be a collectors item in years to come. On a budget though I would still choose the SE-02 over the Behringer Model D as it gives a similar tone and it has a great mod matrix and sequencer too.
I would go SE-02 if you need the effects, but that Berhinger Model D is were I would throw my pesos. Really I guess it depends on your personal style as to which one speaks to you more. I like both. I could easily see my self running the Tempest through the SE-02 effects.
Roland SE-02. The Pro-1 or the Model D have NO patch memory storage or sequencers. The SE-02 has 512 patch memories, and 128 are User writable), and you get a sequencer and built-in delay! Score!
Great big sounds, teeny tiny living space. I GASsed for this so much when it came out. At the moment, It's hard to want to go smaller than Moog size on those silver knobs. Doepfer and Roland System 500 go small enough for me on the mirror cap knob. That is as small as I'll go, for that style, which begs to be in 5u format! I love that the SE-02 sequencer can do per-step modulation like glide per step (up to four per step.) Great video, Bo!
The sE-02 was designed by the folks at Studio Electronics, and they had been building and repairing analog synths for over 30 years. Get the SE-02. It sounds great and has more features than you will get anywhere else for under $500! And you can get a mini keyboard to play with it as well. Great package.
Hi bo! what do you think about the Behringer Model D? have you ever played? can you compare the SE 02 with this behringer clone? you have some recomendation for 3 osc synth?
Hello BoBeats, i have been looking for my first synth. i dont know if i should buy this roland SE-02 or the Korg minilogue xd... Could you maybe help me out?
All the sounds had an extremely sharp, ear-piercing sound to it. I'm looking for a small synth, mostly for very 80s synthwave/pop inspired music, with warm, deep tones. This was just awful to listen to, sadly. Love the looks and form factor.
ust wanted to point out as a guy who just left the store without buying the SE02 - it is MUCH MUCH smaller then u think or expect. Infact i was aurprised by how small it is. As a big guy with big hands my self - unuasble. Teally liked the sound of the se2. But the size is just redicolous (its muxh smaller then other rolane botiquiesl
It’s a very good synth, the software editor for it is recommended, so easy to arrange patches. I only wish it could become paraphonic in a future update.
Hi Bo, I have a synth/keyboard question that I'm sure you're better qualified than me to answer. So. I need a controller keyboard (the Arturia Keylabs looks good) but would rather spend my (limited) resources on a nice synth/actual musical instrument that could also function as a control keyboard. Of course I wouldn't get a bazillion knobs and sliders that I could freely assign to virtual instruments, but to be honest I don't really need that. A good velocity sensitive keyboard sending midi on/off is the most important thing for me. Arturia's Minibrute seems like a nice instrument, as does the Yamaha Reface CP. Would they both work as simple control keyboards? Or are there any other synths you'd recommend that can also work as controllers? Or am I just being greedy, and do actually need a dedicated control keyboard? Thanks! jim
I think you are right that a synth is more fun than a midi keyboard. But something like a minibrute doesnt work very well since it does not send midi on the knobs. Monologue does however, and Minilogue.
Aha! Nice 1 Bo (and Korg) thanks for the tip. Just checked on Thomann, and the Mini is twice the price of the Mono. Which would you say has more bang-for-your-buck? You have both? Actually, not relevant but I'm anyway interested, would it be vulgar to ask how many synths you do have...?
Start with the SE-02, get the Roland Boutique Keyboard. Then add a number of other things down the road. The SE-02 has MIDI In and Out so you can connect to a very wide variety of synths and modules. The SE-02 has 512 patch memories, 128 are user writable, so you can create synth sound patches, and easily call them up later on. Most other a]true analogue synths under $500 do not have patch memory storage.
Its not a review, its more of a first look and sound demo. Since I am very new to Rolands synths I want to hold of a little on the review. And I think one of my longer reviews recently was of the CraftRhythm and PO-33 so no, how cheap something is does not matter to me :-)
The studio Electronics SE-01 is a fairly close clone of the Moog mini Model D, and the SE-02 is an awesome collaboration with Roland and squeezes it all into the Roland Boutique synth form factor, so you can add mini keyboard, or put it in a DK-01 case. It is a great deal for everything that you get I. This tiny box. It even includes standard MIDI In and Out ports too - so get CV/Trigger to MIDI integration to allow you connect to the world of EuroRack synths.

I would go SE-02 if you need the effects, but that Berhinger Model D is were I would throw my pesos. Really I guess it depends on your personal style as to which one speaks to you more. I like both. I could easily see my self running the Tempest through the SE-02 effects.
I’m currently kicking myself for letting one of these pass me by, it went for a too good price. Damn
I sold mine and i regret it
@@BoBeats Damn
@@BoBeats Do you remember if the LFO reached audio speed?
The keyboard is Roland Boutique K-25m Keyboard
?
Now... Behringer Pro-1 or Roland SE02 ?
Roland SE-02. The Pro-1 or the Model D have NO patch memory storage or sequencers. The SE-02 has 512 patch memories, and 128 are User writable), and you get a sequencer and built-in delay! Score!
How does it compare to the minilogue XD rack?
Great big sounds, teeny tiny living space. I GASsed for this so much when it came out. At the moment, It's hard to want to go smaller than Moog size on those silver knobs. Doepfer and Roland System 500 go small enough for me on the mirror cap knob. That is as small as I'll go, for that style, which begs to be in 5u format! I love that the SE-02 sequencer can do per-step modulation like glide per step (up to four per step.) Great video, Bo!
How can I patch this feedback loop in modular? And is it possible on the neutron?
The Neutron has no patch memories like the SE-02 does - 512 patches!
Im newd....jump from se-02. To eurorack modulars??????
only a non native English speaker would declare that they "enjoy large knobs"
Se-02 or BS 2?
Se-02
SE-02
Hi Bo, if you could figure out how to get the most out of Studio Electronics software controller for the SE-02, that'd be some YTvid cannon fodder!
Did you mention it is a monophonic synth?
Isn’t it virtual analog because the boutique module things use Roland’s analog circuit behavior thing?
Correct me if I’m wrong
No this is not based on the ACB technology. Its real analog circuitry
The sE-02 was designed by the folks at Studio Electronics, and they had been building and repairing analog synths for over 30 years. Get the SE-02. It sounds great and has more features than you will get anywhere else for under $500! And you can get a mini keyboard to play with it as well. Great package.
Can I know which audio interface or preamp do you use? I really like the tone, thanks!
I use a Clarett 8Pre and an AudioFuse
5:00 this sounds like a certain Prophet 5 preset, and a certain Daft Punk sample...
How would you compare to sh-01A? Which one is better?
I have both, they are 2 very different synths. SH-01a only has 1 oscillator, the SE-02 has 3 oscillators for a really fat true analog sound.
Hi bo! what do you think about the Behringer Model D? have you ever played? can you compare the SE 02 with this behringer clone? you have some recomendation for 3 osc synth?
Do you recommend this synth for make bass lines? I was thinking on the TB-3 but found this option.
Definitely
Oh Yes Dude
Get the SE-02 - it has 512 memory patches, 128 are user editable.
just bought one
Did you use additional reverb on it? If yes, what kind of reverb device did you use?
No additional fx
Just adjust the speed of the digital delay that is built-in. Awesome synth in a small package.
wawoo, ifulki ihla ismurg, tamakhirt !!!
Does it tune itself?
Nice. I may look at getting one of these later. Covid poor right now.
Hello BoBeats, i have been looking for my first synth. i dont know if i should buy this roland SE-02 or the Korg minilogue xd... Could you maybe help me out?
XD would be my choice between the two
What can you do with an se-02?
Make sounds and sequences :-)
BoBeats Well yeah, I watched the video. It was supposed to be funny 'cause it rhymes.
And it's red means recording's thing
Haha now I get it :-) sorry, I am slow
What's the knob size/spacing compared to Eurorack, say Clouds? Is it more or less it? Trying to get a taste of the form factor.
I’d say its more crowded for some parameters for sure. Clouds doesn’t feel too tight for me but this can be a little tight sometimes
How does it compare to Behringer's Model D?
The Behringer Model D has no patch memory storage, built-in delay or a sequencer. Get the Roland SE-02. I had the Behringer Model D and got rid of it.
I just sync’d my se-02 to my tr-8s, now I now what a crack addict feels like when they are given an endless supply of their drug of choice . . .
2 year's past, so is it still masterpiece, or all ppl sell it, lol!
It’s a very good synth, the software editor for it is recommended, so easy to arrange patches. I only wish it could become paraphonic in a future update.
@@halion9 i thought its analog synth, dont it?
Y QSL Studio Electronics do the editor and plugin for the DAW, its analog path apart from the delay.
It is still a great sounding true analogue synth with built-in delay and sequencer. Still a great deal!
I hate shift key period. Peace Christo
Haha!! Ofc!! :-) would think no less
Anyone else have a sticking key or two on their companion keyboard upon buying it?
The Korg Minilogue has mini keys as well. Great sound, but not full sized keys.
It’s a good synth but it’s a little too pricey
not anymore
Noiselab Project what can I expect to shell out for a used unit?
I just paid 300 for one
Think I’m turning into a Roland fanboy 😬
Cheaper the “gift”, shorter the review? 🤔
Its not a review, its more of a first look and sound demo. Since I am very new to Rolands synths I want to hold of a little on the review. And I think one of my longer reviews recently was of the CraftRhythm and PO-33 so no, how cheap something is does not matter to me :-)
I like the cut of its jib but I'm out to master volca keys lol
Looks like moog
The studio Electronics SE-01 is a fairly close clone of the Moog mini Model D, and the SE-02 is an awesome collaboration with Roland and squeezes it all into the Roland Boutique synth form factor, so you can add mini keyboard, or put it in a DK-01 case. It is a great deal for everything that you get I. This tiny box. It even includes standard MIDI In and Out ports too - so get CV/Trigger to MIDI integration to allow you connect to the world of EuroRack synths.
So, yes. It sounds a lot like a Moog, and you get so much more including additional waveforms and so much more.
Not very bad its sound but not good at all, imo.
Synthesizer for ants.
The synthesizer has to be at least... three times bigger than this!
BoBeats are you a Dancehall fan? As from 3.28 it sounded just like the peanie peanie riddim
sounds are as weak as its size. If it didn't say Roland I'd think it was a failed Behringer
