Best motor tech page on YT PERIOD.
at around 3000 bucks for the full kit for my 98 trans am, this is half the cost of a paxton or procharger..what a deal! thanks Richard!
and made in USA
Im consdering this for my 2000 t/a how was fitment?
Also interested in the 4thbgen fitment
Did anyone do this on a TA? wondering the same thing for mine.
I will need a monster trans before this , I Autocross and could move to a faster class ,just fun racing
I've longed for a Torque Storm supercharger for so long now this test just proves how well they are built
I was gonna ask you to run a torqstorm test but ya beat me to it. This channel is so helpful and the videos are so detailed it's great. Keep doing what you're doing, your killing it👌👍
Hi Richard, I’ve really been enjoying the videos lately. Your first videos where kind of short and now they span 10-15min which I like much better. You are able to hit all the key points and explain things well with the longer videos. Thank you for all your research and testing!
Not gonna lie dude, I sooo wish I had your job, or at least something close where I could Dyno test all types of parts on all types of engines. Don't get me wrong, I have my favorite v8's (LS & Pontiac 400/455), but I also like and seriously respect everything from coyote 5 liters, 3rd gen hemis to Honda K24a2's and Subaru EJ257's. Definitely gotta respect a little 4 banger 2.0/2.4 that'll rev from the factory to 8200-8500rpm, and put down 450-500+HP with basic turbo, rods and pistons.
I'd love to see you testing some smaller, more common economy GM &Ford (LY7 3.6 and Ford 3.7L ) v6's and i4's, with aftermarket efi/TURBOS/superchargers/injectors etc these engines are putting down buku reliable power too. They put these in way more cars than LS's/LT's and can be had cheaper from junkyards, plus they fit soo much easier in smaller cars like Miata/s2000 and on and on. Engines like the last GM 60 degree v6's 3500/3900 are ridiculously compact and easy to swap, add a turbo, injectors etc will put down 500-600hp all day.
Just saying that while I love an LS it's a pain in the ass to swap into a miata
So Rich all the content lead men to going torquestrom so wanted to say thanks
Watched this again. They seem to be right where they were intended to run, 700hp + -.
According to the hp and torque curves, the dip in the boost matches the peak on the torque curve. The sweet spot in torque/ rpm for the engine. The supercharger says, I'm pushing the flow regardless of size, try to keep up. Nice.
How about a video of your old cars from back in the day....motors...biggest motors tested....test you remember the best... ETC..Thanks for doing these videos!
This is a great test demonstrating that boost levels do not correlate to horsepower when comparing different engines. Also, it is important to note that you cannot just "pulley up" a small supercharger and expect it to make large gains in power. Each supercharger has to be sized to the correct application with expected air demands and supercharger speed.
Also to note, the 4.8 Liter had 13 PSI of boost while the 408 CI engine had less than 8 PSI. Yet, they made roughly the same power. This is another example of how boost pressure will differ between combinations, yet will make similar power. I would guess that if we ran this supercharger on a 7.0 Liter LS that made over 700 Horsepower N/A, we would see little to no gain, even with the smaller pulley.
Boost is a bad thing, it is wasted energy it is restriction to flow. The only thing you need to look at is lbs of air per min, mass airflow.
Finally some real test on these things, good work as always!
ruclips.net/video/NG_zGriin0Q/видео.html
Id say this is some real testing :)
I really enjoy your videos. I'd like to see one comparing stock and various aftermarket vvt cams on a 6.0 or 5.3.
Keep up the good work👍
I am so glad you did this test. I have 95 impala with an Texas speed 408 with livernois lse heads. I just purchased the torqstorm and I'm happy with those numbers
The king of testing
Always fantastic content. We love what you do.
We need a twin charging test! A supercharger and turbo charger would be awesome
Has this been done? Combination of torq sc and turbo? That wud be some test!
@@ericm.phenya706 it’s definitely been done in the past, I think air intake temperatures are typically to hard to keep down tho and that’s why it’s not common
Great format. Considering adding to a 383 I have and this answers a lot of questions
You are a wealth of interesting information Richard, thanks!!
Another awesome video Dr Richard Holdener, finally getting a little sleep I see. Twins seem like the way to go for me.
Good stuff, can't wait to see what the Twins do!
Good stuff Richard. If you want to donate some of that used equipment I will be glad to street test it for you
Commenting for the algorithm.
yes a twin screw with a turbo is the only kind of two superchargers I would run
Now yer talkin!!!
Only if it's the 4.0l whipple.
@@brudevold62 come on man they make an 8.3L whipple now. why not go a little overboard?
@@bert5003 Holy crap I haven't been keeping up. I'm scared to see how many CFMs that thing pushes. But no doubt if your gonna compound boost that 8.3L twin screw is the one you wanna do it with.
Torque Storm needs to offer a bigger supercharger unit something in the F1-X range
You do the Chevy fuel pump the way I do that's pretty funny it's better than dealing with the straps
@RichardHoldener lets get a a dyno shoot out of all the new TorqStorms... They now offer 84, 91 and 94 blowers!
Woot woot info to get my day started
Richard you should tune a 5.2l or 5.9l junkyard Magnum Mopar motor...
Let's see the potential of a Mopar stock block!!!
Just wanted to see...if it would hold boost...
Lmk..Sir..
By the way your a best tuner by far..on YT..👌🙏
planned
That smaller pulley would have probably made more peak power on that 4.8.
Just ordered a torquestorm for my uk
Ls3, complete with btr stage 2 blower cam. Hopefully its going to rock!!
I was checking out the TorqStorm supercharger page and was surprised to find that TorqStorm themselves got 912HP/747ft.lbs at the crank with the 3.1 pulley on a Methanol fed NON-intercooled 11.85:1 compression fully built 388 (4.125 bore x 3.622 Stroke) LS with 2" primary fender exit headers (no full exhaust) a CNC single TB manifold and big 105mm TB, CNC ported aftermarket LS3 heads with 2.185/1.59 valves, 6.90 lift 248/260 116 LSA camshaft @ roughly 10lbs of boost, 24 deg of timing via Holley ECU, ALL UNDER 7,500 RPM and ran an easy shakedown pass of 8.66 1/4 mile in their 69 Camaro show/race vehicle and saw 8.4 in their future with some fine tuning. They made a point to say that this is the off the shelf LS kit with the same pulley they sell to everyone....nothing special. Color me IMPRESSED.
maybe with twin blowers?
@@richardholdener1727 nope. watched the video and everything. 1 blower....alot of compression, timing and methanol.
I have been wondering. Great video!
Keep up the awesome work. Thanks for all the info
I looking at the twin set up this company to put on that 540 power adder you talk me into!!! Your awesome content and work is awesome. But video on dwell of long rods is worrying me because already have and was planning to use my dual nitrous set up with 950 carb. on the 540 p.a.... Twin set up is beautiful and not over priced to cover 1200 hp. Fitting it in engine bay of a C-3 may be a challenge...lol. Think be excellent for trips to Kroger with my handicap tag. America 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸😀😀😀😀
don't worry about rod length
Just seen you on motor trend Richard and your the motor god thank you for all your info and knowledge
that was fun-needs a 4 bar
@@richardholdener1727 I agree I have a on 3 3.5 bar and dose all I need for now when it warms up I will turn it up on the heavy 4 door Silverado 1525hp at the moment....
Seen u and was yelling at my wife that is my friend of you tube lol ir amazing man keep it up
So the TorqStorm and the Vortech V3 swap kit are pretty much the same price @ right around $3k. What are your opinions on one vs the other? I have an 01 2door GMC Jimmy with a heads/cam, 10.5:1 LQ4 (vids on my page) and am debating on one of the 2. Thoughts?
I want to see a test with a boosted 5.3 with different cams, stock cam, maybe the LJMS stage 2, sloppy stage 2 and something else.
Super Chargers are more controlled by space its filling then turbo .
smaller the space boost goes up quickly.
And all that huge pipe on 350 would probably run 5-7 boost with big wheel 8-10 with small one .
or needed 10 to 1 flat tops centerfugul blower being more 50 50 deal
my roots actually realy liked pistons too with only 5-7 psi and 76 cc combustion chambers
4:49 glitch in the matrix lol JK. Love your content Richard
did you see the woman in red
@@richardholdener1727 lmao
Glad you made this video
i did exacly what i expeted, they are great and i think they have now upgrate the wider belt system
Is there money to be made buying wrecking yard 4.8's, 5.3's and 6's, going through them to make sure they are good runners, rings, oil pump work, porting heads and offering carb or injection as options? Just curious, recently retired mechanic looking for something to keep busy and maybe make a little extra income to supplement retirement, I would think most hot rod guys or track racers build thier own engines but just curious.
not sure on economics of that
Hey Richard. Love the channel. I'm really thinking about the torque storm due to it's relative low cost and good performance on my 5.3 ls, Delta reground SS2 camshaft, gapped rings, ported/polished 862 heads and Holley EFI 102mm TB/elbow/120lb injectors. I'm hoping for 650 rwhp in my foxbody. Talked with Torque Storm and he's thinks it should make good power but not 650. I watched the video on the 4.8 and it pumped out really good power. What is you thoughts? I'm a budget guy so I'd love to see a video of a Delta reground camshaft one day.
ITS REALLY BEST NEAR 700 HP FLYWHEEL-HARD TO GET MORE
Naming a centrifugal supercharger kit Torqstorm is a great example of an oxymoron.
This is awesome, thank you
Such great info from this channel
I like the torque curve better on the 408 with the smaller pulley. the hp on the 4.8 was still climbing with the 3.25" pulley. It'd be nice to see the hp nose over within the rev range. the s/c seems to work better with the 3.1" pulley.
What’s your opinion on them worth the money? Quality? Better options for the price out there? I’ve seen these and wondered on my ls3.? 2 blowers seems quite excessive.
they work well at this power level
Wait wait wait, that 408 made 550 hp na with 8.75:1 comp?? That seems crazy good for having absolutely no compression.
That what I was thinking when he said that. That motor is making that much power with no compression. How in the hell,WTF???
Damn. Seen 408s make that all motor damn near
More compression should yield better na power. Less overlap would help with the engine holding its boost rather than just being a big air pump?
overlap makes power
Time to throw a second one on the 408!
What pulley ratios would be necessary to run something like this on a 5.9 L Cummins diesel? At under 1200rpm as a manifold (force fed) setup as twins?
---
What kind of outlet temp/ pressure did you measur? It would give me an idea where on a theoretical mindseye compressor map you landed. Thermal expansion pulling Donner Pass tonight my temps were 31°f -2psi (altatude over 6000')ambant 56°air filter compressor discharg 354° at 29psig, at mainifold 52°28psig
You really don't want a supercharger on a modern four stroke diesel. Unless you are doing a Banks super turbo you're not going to gain any driveability on the street, or performance on the track eliminating the turbo. Load her up, let the boost rise and have her soak in 30+ lbs.
@@otm646 what turbo do you recammend that can spool over 5psig @55mph WOT 1150-1200 rpm in 6th gear(.61 OD Vs .69 w518) with a 1st gen Cummins (not modern)? Currently it is a hx35w12/6 with a BD Diesel Dieverter Valve "Quick Spool Valve" that turned the 12cm into a 6cm. Drop under 62mph@10psi and EGT goes through the and start dumping black smoke, due to the turbo falling off spool, this is were the belt driven shows promise.
A 6bt @2500rpm uses the same CFM as a 4bt@3500. So was considering running a HE221 over a hx35/s360sxe, this is a 400hp setup on a 4bt@3500 so should erratically be perfect for my 6bt@ 2500.
Glad you fixed your fuel pump on your truck did you use a A1000?
only if they gave me that after asking year, make and model
@@richardholdener1727 lol knowing you would have 1 just laying around
I want one of these for my little 5.3 envoy denali so bad
What timing, afr, and spark plugs with the e-85 on the 4.8 with torq storm did you run with the truck manifold?
I’m currently at 14 degrees right now with e-85 and torqstorm on my 5.3. I’m running the NGK BR7 EF and look good so far with 11.7 afr. But would like to get similar results as to what you achieved on the 4.8 with torqstorm. Thanks
YOU NEED MORE TIMING-WE RAN OVER 20 DEGREES ON E85
@Richard Holdener thank you Sir.
I always wanted to see a Ls rev out to 9000rpm on a centrifugal supercharger.
Me too. I wanna see the supercharger run on his destroked ls3 at 7900rpm
With the max of the torqstorm being around 700hp would you have a benefits with a 200 shot of nitrous?
Pretty keen on one of these for my 351 Cleveland
Not really a fan of the torque storm. Your really back at the P1 starter kit from Procharger. Turbo, belt supercharger or larger Procharger is the way to go. 1000hp for a streetcar now days is the norm.
I'm having trouble with a Torqstorm single sc in a 5.0 sbf with trickflow heads and cam, it wont boost, it reaches 5psi on redline.
Tested no boost leaks, 3.25 pulley i'm afraid the engine flows more than what the sc can provide.
the blower will support over 700 hp, you have another problem
How much hp would it make on stock 5.3 with 80lb injectors and 340 fuel pump?
Would you possibly do a video on vortech v3 sci truck fead kit on a 5.3 lm7 ?
just for clarity... a $400 4.8 made 650hp and a $4000 built stroker made 715hp.
Yep, the supercharger was the limiting factor on the stroker, it can only move about 700hp worth of air, as Richard stated.
@@RadRidesByCru that is what people miss, you're not going to throw a junkyard turd in your minty project car. You are going to strip it down to the short block, if you're going to run boost you're going to have to pull the pistons for ring work. At that point throw bearings at it and rebuild the whole thing. The money up front is far easier than pulling the motor down the road, or fighting with an unreliable project you spent years and big money on.
this was not any kind of price comparison-just running the blower on two different combos
Don't forget you are dealing with a 408 that has practically no compression. I repeat practically no compression... That's going to make all the difference in those numbers
Nice, but where is boost curve for 4.8? :)
Denser charge due to the fuel cooling the air coming into the engine at high rpm?
Why does the stroker stroker get a intercooler and a fast manifold and the 4.8 didn't ? I feel like the 4.8 could've actually made the same power as the 408 stroker if those 2 variables would've been matched.
That's nothing but wishful thinking. You know better than that.
Have you ever tried a "twin charging" or "super turbo" set up for compounding? I've been wanting to play with it for a while, but life gets in the way sometimes
coming up soon
I hear the tuning and scaling is a little bit of a nightmare
Please do a video comparing more or less cam overlap under boost
Yep! All the same specs, different LSA for each
Over lap and LSA are different things
Yes but it's the best way to show turbo cam vs circle track cam. Other option is leave the ivcp and evop the same and increase overlap
I’m more interested in comparing the 2 extremes. -20* vs +20. What does that do the power curve vs boost curve for turbos vs supercharger. It would even be cool to see what that does to exhaust back pressure. BTW this is easily the best and most informative channel on RUclips. Keep em coming
Is there a front sump pan available for a Gen V LT? Or does a GEN III/IV pan work?
Wow you got a lot of motors
Damn!...Richard i told my bro my 4.8 was a lil beast!...he told me to junk it and get a 5.3 or 6.0
Yay for the fuel pump.
Would you recommend this product?
IT WORKS AS SHOWN IN THE VIDEO
Similar air volume = similar power, eh? But less boost on engine taking bigger bites. Extrapolating mass air flow, I'm betting they took in very similar amounts of air.
I am sold!!! Im getting this kit
How much of a headache was it to change a fuel pump that way? I put a ramp under both front and back driver side only of my pickup and dropped the tank and changed the pump with little effort and plenty of room, I never could understand the whole lifting of the box thing.
that works too if the tank is empty
It’s just a couple bolts to left the bed
@@mcfero1 depends on your geographic location. Bed bolts on a California truck no big deal. Bed bolts on a Michigan truck? Not going to happen. We just dropped the tank on the two post.
Great video
An angle grinder to the bed makes fuel pump replacement sooo much easier....
cut the truck of my Mustang for that too
Sir, have you tested centrifugal blower superchargers to maintain intake flow at high rpm?
LOTS OF CENTRIFUGAL BLOWER TESTING
I wonder how much the radius air entry is worth. And would huge radius entry make a bigger difference?
the radiused entry helped-bigger than what we used won't-the blower is out of flow
I would like to see any engine run a torqstorm supercharger on pump gas. Run it without any intercooling of any kind. Then, run it again with pure water injection. No race gas of any kind. While injecting water, raise the timing if possible
What kind of ring gap do you run on the junk yard motors. When u open them up.
He runs .030
On just the second ring or what?
@@terrellhubert5753 first and second
.025-.030 on both top #1 ring & #2 ring...its kinda like an unwritten rule

How about a test with and without a vacuum pump?
what more could you ask for NICE
Twin superchargers? How about compound?! One feeds the other! ;-)
HANDS Holdener! 👐
Personally I blame squirrels
Do you just have loads of junkyard motors everywhere at Westech?
I usually have a few
A little late to the party but I wonder if Richards ever done testes on the powerdyne/ cool chargers of the days of yesteryear
yes-my first was an A-trim Vortech (serial number 001)
More power
Whats the power numbers on the 3.1 pully?
Have you ever twin charged an LS? I was considering single turbo into my LSA blower on my LS3.
We just finished a twin setup! ruclips.net/video/NG_zGriin0Q/видео.html
How much wheel hp would this equate to roughly? Ls2 220r do you think it would make 600whp comfortably?
The TS blower wont do 600 whp comfortably
Thank you. I’ll probably just do the tried and true sloppy 7875.
I have an 04 4.8 with a Texas speed stage 3 cam with speed engineering long tubes and was only able to pull 300 to the wheel out of it, injectors at 96% how can I reach those numbers your showing?
THTAS LIKELY 400 FLYWHEEL, MAYBE MORE IF YOU HAVE BIG TIRES
@@richardholdener1727 last question for you haha should I go with a torquestorm supercharger or was looking at Huron Speeds turbo kit I cannot decide for the life of me which to go with.
Like these videos but getting tired of all the turbo and centrifugal supercharger tests. Would really like to see some PD blower tests such as E-force or Magnuson Heartbeat.
Could the difference between manifolds in the 4.8 be the sizeable cam causing reversion in the inlet manifold?
reversion in the inlet manifold? We've run the truck intake lots of times
Richard Holdener I realise that truck manifold is a staple on the channel. I just meant maybe u stumbled across a rare moment when the cam itself just won’t match that intake.
Maybe u could do another video with the same combination and try a few different cams to see if things change, would be an interesting video.
I enjoy trial and error as much as u and all ur viewers do.
Love all ur videos mate, keep it up!
jesus .what do you end up doing with all these junkyard motors after you're done
No intercooler on the 4.8?
If that 408 had a higher CR it would have WALKED that 4.8 .
it is limited by the flow rate of the blower
