Joey Kelly revealed the background story of the song in an interview.
During a joint three week long tour on the yukon river their canoe capsized. Both swimming in the cold water realized the danger of the situation and that this river could take their life within minutes. This incident inspired Till to write the song.

Till canoed the Yucon with a musician friend, Joey Kelly, and they also published a book about their experiences on that trip.

Definitely one of my absolute favorite songs from Till Lindemann, it sadly often gets overlooked because it does not have a messed up video attached like some of the others.

Really great song in which Till really activates the melodic voice again. Maybe because it doesn't happen so often to this extent, it's something special and really hits in.

Yay!! I think this is my fav Lindemann song & like you when the chorus hits it’s almost like you can feel yourself on the river rapids it’s so beautiful & my favorite part has to be the bridge right after the second chorus it hits you hard & won’t let go!
    Thanks guys great reaction!

As far as I know, he was on the road with Joey Kelly on the Yukon. Joey Kelly was a member of an Irish folk song family "The Kelly Family" that toured through Germany and performed at marketplaces. Later they were even so successful that they bought a castle in Germany. Joey Kelly became famous after his music career through endurance and extreme sports events. Till and Joey also took another river trip on the Amazon.
A few years ago there was an interesting TV show where Joey Kelly and Flake met and talked about their experiences in the music business.

Peter did an amazing job with the music representing the mighty Yukon river. A trickling piano in the beginning as the source, picking up speed and power with guitar and synths like rapids, slowing down again to admire its beauty, picking up again going a tad deeper to emphasize the always present danger. Combined with the lyrics of a golddigger who sees the river as a living thing. Luring you in with the shiny golden treasure but trying to kill anybody who tries to get to it. As Till said: gives me a shiver. A hidden gem on this album, which is kinda fitting come to think of it, fits with the lyrics perfectly.

I fell in love with this song when I saw them live in Mexico City on New Years Eve. Couldn’t stop listening to it over and over again on my way back home (I live pretty far from Mx City). Till’s performance on this one is just amazing.

As little kid, I loved Jack London stories about that region, about golden fever, that dragged to death so many men, fanatically looking to get rich by prospecting cold waters for gold, obsessed with that idea till the end. This song gets it 100%. 'Wild river, you stole my eyes, never gave them back' insta chills.

Not wanting to be the bringer of bad news, but in case you are unaware: Peter has left Lindemann due to complications in the partnership. No exact reason mentioned as I know but still a sad fact. Till might find another co-worker, but I think it might be a tough thing to replace Peter. Time will tell.
I recommend Peters old band Hypocrasy. New album. New videos. Treat yourselves with ”Worship”. See what you think.
    Cheers!
