Project reality is standalone, you don't need BF2 for it to work 😊

Funny enough, some devs that made project reality later worked on squad

Squad was supposed to be PR 2.0 but the dev team fractured over choice of game engine and other things. Some split off to develop Squad. We still have no successor to PR. Even with its dated graphics it remains the best milsim.
