    You mean to say the CSA actually does testing, from what I've heard they take the word of the manufacturer, otherwise, it would require brains.

      Perhaps purchasing one yourself and deducting the cost from your rent might be an option? Just keep a copy of the purchase receipt and all of the times you have contacted the landlord before purchasing one. Then send the landlord a letter stating what you did. Send everything with signature return receipt for evidence that you have tried to contact him or her multiple times. Just a disclaimer, I am an American but that is something I would do here in Connecticut. That seems like a way to corner the landlord, after all, if he or she comes after you for the abated rent, you would have evidence that you tried to contact them multiple times and your family's security was at risk. I don't think there would be a reasonable judge that would go against you in a court of law.
      Another thing you can do is get all of the tenants in the building to contact a local consumer watchdog journalist, perhaps your local tv news. They can put pressure on your local political representative to put pressure on your landlord.

    Why do these things always use the ridiculous batteries

    • @HappyfoxBiz

      it's standard, if you don't know how to change a 9v battery, you failed in life.

    I have the Kidde Nighthawk carbon monoxide detector. It was manufactured in 2013. I justed moved into my apartment and none of the batteries in any of the smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors were installed properly (backwards). Plus, the batteries are all dead.
    I got a new battery and tested all the detectors, and they all seem to work. But, I was wondering, do I have to replace the carbon monoxide detector?? I was reading online to change it every 7 to 10 years, and 2023 is going to be the 10th year.
    Is this something that I need to do? I'd rather be safe than sorry, though I am on an extremely limited budget. Is this something that the landlord would be responsible for doing? (I live in Ontario)

    Wouldn't it be better up high? doesn't gas rise?

    • @jimf1964
      @jimf1964 5 лет назад

      Air is gas. Actually several gasses. Some are heavier, some are lighter, some, in trace amounts, just mix. Air is mostly nitrogen, CO2, and oxygen, with a few other trace elements.
      Pretty sure the other person that replied is correct, and carbon monoxide is heavier. Head a story how a whole village died, when a nearby vent from a volcano spilled carbon monoxide over the rim, and it invisibly flowed down into their town, which was low lying.

      "Because carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air and also because it may be found with warm, rising air, detectors should be placed on a wall about 5 feet above the floor. The detector may be placed on the ceiling" - US EPA

    My understanding is that CO gas is heavier then air, so what is the point of purchasing fire smoke detector and CO combo tester when one tests it by the ceiling (smoke) and the other by the floor (CO)?

    • @guidedbygreen1480
      @guidedbygreen1480 3 года назад

      Carbon dioxide(CO2) is heavier than air, carbon monoxide(CO) has one oxygen making it molecularly lighter than air
