I am really enjoying your videos.....especially your excitement. As an OLD FART lifetime boater and former USCG I will occasionally check in to add to your knowledge. TERMINOLOGY: Any vessel less than 100' is a BOAT while any vessel over 100' is a SHIP.
Love following your videos. I'll be buying a boat in a couple years to do the Great Loop. Like that you show the reality of your journeys and the integrity of your learning process. Btw, I watched 'Captain Ron' after you talked about it. Great movie!
Haha Captain Ron is a classic - glad you checked it out! No way to do it other than show the realities of the Loop - you're going to have a fantastic time!
Thanks for such great coverage of the Dismal Swamp. We would love to take that route, but it would be a little tricky in our current boat. Pod driven boats don't do well with logs and other debris. Every day is an adventure on the boat and you guys are making the best of it.
This is our first time hearing about Pod driven boats, interesting engineering! I guess having an impact there could cause issues... Thanks for watching!
We loved all of those historic buildings! And love when cities have lots of them! The balancing act of planning, getting to where you need to be, and having time to explore (oh and work too!) is tough!
When you get to the Hudson River in NY; let me know. We are in Haverstraw Safe Harbor Marina with our 40` Hatteras Carpe Diem.... would love to meet you both!
Another great spot to live! When we stopped back through southbound (not on RUclips just yet) - the USS Wisconsin was lit up for the season; very cool!
I just discovered you guys and I’m enjoying your adventure as told from your view point. My husband and I are also boaters located at Bay Spring Marina on the Tenn-Tombigbee just south of the Tennessee River. We love river boating because it is beautiful and you are always in protected water. I have a theory about boating, it is 90% boredom and 10% terror but always a great adventure. Off you
100% agree on river boating! Our time on the St. John’s and the Waccamaw have been really special… we are looking forward to getting over there in the Tenn Tom. If only we could convert the 10% terror to 10% excitement that’d be great 😊
I don’t know what your time line is but there are several facilities that have winter, covered and uncovered facilities for winter storage on the Hudson and the canal that you could use.
Welcome to P-Town. Another great video. Elliot both you and Jenn will be making landingd like the taxi did in the video. Jenn my middle nephew is an architect up in Mass. When we did the loop he really liked Canojoharie NY. He was along with us on that portion of the Loop. Be safe...Enjoy Tidewater Va.
I was last in Norfolk back in 72 while in the USN, Jen, your doing better then my wife does, she will not even attempt to run the boat at all, truly scared to do it. good video looking forward to the next. Thanks for making them
Wow, I bet you get a totally different view of the city in the Navy. Thanks for your service! Thanks for the kind words it can only get better from here 😁
You guys might already know this however it's always safe to be reminded again. Never tie off with short ropes when going down in the locks i saw a boat get picked up out of the water. The majority of locks i have went through offered ropes that hang from the side you can hang onto when going up and down. Just a friendly tip plus you guys are likely miles past this already.
Thanks so much! We actually had one of our lines catch a little ( it was a spring one) and it jolted us awake to make sure to constantly feed them through. Have to be constantly aware - thanks for the tip!
We do have AC! Unfortunately it'll destroy our batteries in no time flat so we don't typically run it unless we are connected to shore power. We could run our generator but since this is a free dock we didn't want to disrupt our neighbors plus we could save diesel 😁
@@SchoandJo These towns usually have a noise curfew of around 10:00 or 11:00 pm so you wouldn't be able to run your Gen all night anyway. BUT, if it is 92 degrees outside then the inside of the boat can't be much cooler if any. I applaud your desire to be a good neighbor.
Is the swim platform still in one piece after the repair. Awesome vid as always. Sorry so late, we were at the rendezvous at Joe Wheeler in Alabama. Thanks. D.
We'll have to try and make it to a rendevous! Are you going to the Winter one in Ft Meyers? The swim platform is "mostly" in one piece! Not perfect but at least its solid.
@@SchoandJo we are doing a trawler school in Dania Beach for 3 days in late December so probably won’t. We like keeping up with you trials and tribulations of the loop. Keep up the good work. GO BRAVES!!! Thanks. D.
What resources have you found best to use for planning your stops. Free docks vs paid docks, best routes, best stops, etc. A bit overwhelming thinking about the full trip plan. Thanks!
It’s definitely overwhelming as a whole, we will have to do a video about it in the future. Our strategy is planning by season, like Spring ICW, Summer Great Lakes, Fall Mississippi and then planning about a week at a time to a destination depending on weather and how we’ve progressed so far. We use Navionics App to check out all the stops and then we have a few Great Loop books as well as the forums to dive in further!

I was wondering about the timing as well since this is now late October and that you were in the Tidewater region of Virginia and just hitting the Chesapeake, this is totally the wrong timing for being in the early stages of the Loop. I figured that your posting of your videos is well behind real time. I just found your videos and will follow along as you post them. I too am a former Coastie and heading towards the "Old Fart" stage of life. I too from time to time may offer my two cents in regards to proper terminology and other things, even though what we see in these videos will be well after the fact. Wherever you are now at along the Loop, I hope all as gone reasonable well and most importantly without injury to all three of you, including your sweet pup. Safe Journeys and Smooth "Sailing."
Ha ha ha....that big smile on the dog when Elliot pick up the dog!
Haha Ollie is a great sport 😁

Thanks so much John we really appreciate the terminology and assistance!
I just love the 'fur baby' content of your videos! Ollie is just gorgeous.
Haha thanks Greg!
CaptainRon.....best movie ever
It was hilarious! We highly recommend it

Haha! Gotta find that balance I guess... What projects are you working on?

Shark hide protectant for your stainless and metal fittings
Sweet, we’ve never heard of them - we’ll check it out. Thanks!
You better haul a$$ if your going thru lake Michigan the wind is going to get bad soon!
This was filmed back in early May - but for our Loop in '22 we are going to be in the lakes as close to the beginning of June as possible :)
That’s my home area
There’s a really good German restaurant pretty close to where you were.
Sweet! Do you remember the name of the restaurant? We'll add it to the list.
No air conditioner in the boat? Oooo! I wouldn't be able to sleep at night when it's that hot outside.

Great job with lock #2. Is Ollie getting more comfortable with the bridges?
She’s definitely more comfortable when she doesn’t know they are here 😁

What life vest are you using?
I believe we use an older STEARNS life vest, they are hand-me-downs but do the job!
Did you guys make it to Chicago yet?
Nope not yet, today’s video will explain it though!
What dates were y’all in Norfolk/Portsmouth?
Roughly we arrived on May 23rd and left on the 25th!

15 successful dockings, two locks, you guys are erasing the learning curve! It has been so impressive to watch 👏
Woohoo! Thanks for keeping count y'all!
What kind of dog is Ollie Pakistani Sheppard?
I don't think she is a Pakistani Shepherd, but maybe she has some part of them? We think she is part terrier and beagle with lots of extra stuff too!
Good job but the difference between a boat and ship is you set a boat on a ship but you can't set a ship on a boat
Wise words Walter! Makes sense!
You guys need electric scooters and a bicycle trailer for Ollie and grocery’s and stuff
For sure! They are probably the biggest tools we don't have for the Loop, but hopefully soon!
