How Invention Happens: Elijah McCoy

- This two-minute video highlights the contributions of Black inventor Elijah McCoy to American railroad transportation. In 1872, McCoy patented a device to lubricate moving parts of train engines, allowing trains to run faster and more efficiently. It is thought the expression "the Real McCoy" referenced his designs. He is one of many diverse inventors featured in Hagley Museum's Nation of Inventors exhibition opening in Summer 2022.
Noted… FYI… that at the age of 15, Elijah went to Scotland to receive his apprenticeship in mechanical engineering. He returned home to Michigan after becoming certified as a mechanical engineer, after The Civil War.
