You have idol and x-factor for young talents. This is the only singing comp where young and people over 28-30 also can make it. He didnt apply himself, his parents did btw. There are many singers who tries to make a living of their singing but havent made it yet, so a show like this can help them. I dont think the ones who participate is artists full time, many do it as hobby etc and others have never stood on a stage before. I have seen several singers I had heard before on this show who didnt got one chair turned at all, so its all about what the judges feell cause all of them picked out for the auditions can sing.
